What a huge nightmare. Its sad how well people take videos so poorly researched.. There is info here that is outdated by as much as 5 years (Battery cost), there are straight lies (50 Million Clients = 30B a year, this is insulting) and a bunch of misleading statements (about all car companies, including Japanese and korean, build the US version in US Mexico and Canada). Basically even when he got correct a number, it was incorrect in his context. The value of that specific satelite was correct, but instead of talking about the rockets weight he talked all that section of the video as if the cost was in measure of launch. There is no information when you compare the value of launch, what are you launching, what is the payload capacity of your rocket??? And by the way the value of launch will still increase, because they are making a larger rocket, but the value per payload (Kg) is decreasing and that is what Elon is trying to get down. Well at least gets people interested.
I had to stop watching his stuff for that reason. He often say one easy fact followed by an incorrect assumption. All of his videos are this bad, I really wish he would get a fact checker or something as he is helping people learn false things.
Hey, you ever thought of doing a video about Operations Research? Since OR is important in making scheduling decisions like in the Airline industry, it might be a good general topic for you to explore.
Vertical integration is a good way to cut costs, to a point. A company has to remember what their core competency is, and what the economics of scale are. If other companies are better at making batteries, or rocket engines or other highly specialized components, it often makes sense to buy those from someone else. The same is true if you are using a relatively small number of the components compared the the total industrial demand. The real reason Musk is able to make rockets at a much lower cost is that he is being motivated by the free market and real competition. Historically, when the NASA, the government, was the only one making rockets, they had zero incentive to make sure they were inexpensive. Likewise, the government contractors have zero incentive to cut costs or be efficient in their operations. It's amazing what can happen when the profit motive is allowed to work.
Well also Elon had both the capital & secondary business to become his own customer for SpaceX launches. The Starnet mini-satelite launches guarantee the production line will stay spinning & ensure that they are up to scale for their cheap prices. Being your own customer can be useful.
Footnote to this video 2.4 years later. SpaceX is now talking maybe having StarLink separate and holding an IPO. Making the satellite internet company public, while keeping SpaceX private. Seems to fit with this videos take on Musk's economics.
Shut up and take my money. But really though. Can't SpaceX just open a Patreon account? I bet lots of people would want to contribute. I want to see people living on Mars.
The idea that you want to personally contribute to a company's financials already exists, and it's called the stock market. You can buy a literal portion of the company Google. They get your money, and you get some returns based on their performance. It makes sense that you wanna contribute, but when the big financial phalluses get swinging, they'll want both returns on their investment and control over what their money is used for. So he has to avoid it to keep his personal vision at SpaceX.
but if elon musk consider space vacation, it will be big market, and starting the trend for rich people to buy it, and make space vacation more friendly
Takes enough of the rich early adopters to bring the initial income in before it becomes economical to market it more widely. Has always been the case, yes.
But really, are space vacations that appealing? Yeah, floating about will be fun for a few days, but after that there's nothing for a tourist to do, exept come back down. And, as the most expensive parts are sending people up and bringing them down, short stays are bad for buisness.
You may as well get out while you can. Sad to say, but the chaos from the US and the ideology will eventually spread there. And it'll lead to violence, and possible genocide. Dosen't seem like a stable place to stick around.
@@Barskor1 Musk is a capitalistic socialist! Who also believes in Democracy! Just look at how he pays his employees with stock options which is a socialistic idea. They become part owners in the means of production!

I work for Elon, I am an engineer who often contributes to Neuralink's manufacturing. This video actually explains a lot about how and why things are done.
The process of SpaceX and Tesla producing parts internally is called "vertical integration" - sort of like a produce stand growing its own crops. It is more efficient for Tesla in the long run to make the investment in the manufacturing equipment vs buying at a higher premium
But it does open you up to anti-trust legislation later on. Vertical integration on that scale is allowed today but companies that used to own their whole from Mine to Manufacturing to Sales were broken up.
American aerospace companies also followed this practise back in the 1970s , i heard. They made almost every component of commercial airlines in house. Now, they sub contract most of the parts and only perform the final assembly in their factories, as it is cheaper. How is this not the case for tesla?
He's been mostly making videos about some topics that involved planes, and amusingly often managed to squeeze a reference to planes in non-plane related videos. It's a common joke on this channel that something must be wrong if there are no planes involved ;)

He said the bricks made from boring the tunnels would be sold cheap to make low income housing but that never happened. He was supposed to have taken NASA astronauts into space in 2014 but didn't build his rocket so NASA had to delay and spend billions more on making their own rocket. His satellites are having far too many near collisions. People that do use his satellite internet struggle if it is windy or too hot. They aren't getting the speeds promised. His solar roof tiles company still isn't up and running like it should be and cost too much for those that have it with the usual questions over quality. Has he given up on hyperloop? He promised would of 700mph but the prototype tunnel he has, the only one he has, barely reaches 60 if I remember correctly. You'd want to double check that speed. Look up his stance on covid. He's a charlatan that over promises and under delivers and believes his own hope with actual engineers doing all the work, work he doesn't understand and in a lot of cases doing good work but because the expectations and promises are too high they'll never be able to do what he has promised which will make them look incompetent.

Not even second hand, there's the Indian built Tata Nano, the XO laptop and, well, entry level phones. Having watched the video, I don't understand the point he was trying to make, all those things exist, and have not dramatically changed society.
His point about SpaceX achieving much cheaper space launches stands, due to in-house production. But his initial comparison to things like the car industry doesn't work so well, and the video itself demonstrates. SpaceX easily enjoys a 5x reduction in launch price by removing the dependence tree, while Tesla is struggling to make only the battery 30% cheaper. Case in point, most large industries are already operating at quite good production costs, something the space industry lacks. So no, you're not going to get 10x cheaper cars just by Tesla making its own components.

This is by far the most interesting and informative vlog I've seen in a long time. You've covered key points in Musk's economic priorities and I feel I've really learned something that makes sense. Thank you very much.
7:41 _The problem with the space launch market is that it is not a consumer market. Government buy rocket launchers and they don't care about price nearly as much as people, since it's not the decisions makers money. The US Air Force decides they need to launch a certain number of satelites each year and they'll pay whatever it takes._ But from where comes the US budget, if it is not from taxation and through dealing treasury bonds? I heard once the US Air Force knows how to squach a penny. There are some information that is missing right there. Anyway, a correct public spending is a national interest, is an interest to every tax payer!
Odisséia Evolutiva, I don't see how Musk's offer to save NASA 80% of the money they were going to spend is a criticism of Musk. Troodon, While everyone on the political spectrum opposes government waste, there are benefits to forced taxation. Neither civilians nor businesses financially invest themselves in the unforeseen. There is an avalanche of research and scientific breakthroughs and inventions unlocked by NASA, and war. For example, without forced taxation, we wouldn't have microwave ovens. Goals that require large investment for unknown benefits and unknown risks are not things private businesses or corporations are motivated to pursue. In the case of space travel, investing billions to figure out what is entailed in going to the moon, is not a profitable business venture. Government has to foot the bill in order to pave the way for interested parties. For massive projects government is key is exploring the unforeseen costs, and unforeseen challenges, and unforeseen rewards. For the things the benefit everyone, (like clean water utilities or sewage disposal), playing the prisoners dilemma with a large population will always fail. That is the classical game theory example of any scenario in which the best result for all participants comes from cooperation, _but_ everyone is individually motivated to act selfishly against the system. After all, why pay into a project if you make a small impact, but can still reap the benefits? Most people like the idea of preventing our globe from becoming a polluted unbreathable ball of toxic gray goo. Despite this, most people people are too apathetic and prefer to save their own money, than they would donate to every single cause they support. There are very few activists fighting air pollution, toxic water pollution, deforestation, carbon emissions, etc despite a much much larger number of people agreeing with those priorities. It's a cruel tautology that selfishness rewards the selfish people, and selflessness rewards others.
He said: The problem with the space launch market is that it is not a consumer market. *Government buy rocket launchers and they don't care about price nearly as much as people, since it's not the decisions makers money* >> which implies that the now possible savings to the military launchings wouldn't be necessarily accounted, and then former expensive dealings would keep happening.
Odisséia Evolutiva, Yes, I heard that part. How do you imagine those saving wouldn't be accounted for? Are you suggesting NASA would turn their back on Musk's offer because they don't care about choosing the lower price? Are you saying that once Musk saves them money, that money might be spent inefficiently on other things? If so, how is that relevant to Musk? You said information was missing from the video, but the video is about Musk's business ventures.

Elon Musk is the man that everyone aspires to be, and I love that. His mere existence proves that not only will smart and ethical business always be successful, but can also be incredibly profitable in a world where big businesses try their damndest to generate as much profit out as possible. I just wish more businesses took notes from the guy. Currently big businesses are debating whether or not to side with the Chinese government's tyranny just because it nets them slightly more profit. Such a business practice can only lead to distain for such companies and thus their eventual collapse. However, moral companies are safe from that kind of situation because they don't do anything to generate legitimate outrage, and thus are safe from boycotts and protests.
Because he constantly steals ideas from past inventors and claims that he created it. The reusable rocket, electric car, the tunnel, and the electric train have been around for decades. They are nothing new, but Elon musk pretends that he created them. His tunnel in particular is moronic, he claimed that he built it much cheaper than any other tunnel, but when you do the research, you find that his tunnel is much smaller than most tunnels, and his is on the high end of the average, while being smaller than almost all tunnels. People that believe elon is the best are idiots. And they defend him with a passion like no other. Its very sad. Theres a great quote that I heard a while ago, some believe it was from mark Twain but that isnt true. Whoever did say it though, was correct. "It is easier to fool people, than to convince people they've been fooled."
Just watch thunderfoot, doesn't seem like a giant ad for musk. Orbital has been doing cheap launches for years. The issue with reuseable launch vehicles is the weight. The reuseable one can half the payload of a one time use.
What a living legend! Guys we should be proud to live in the same century as him. Hope more people would join him in the process of taking humanity to next giant leap.

You didn't mention that Tesla operate at a massive loss. And SpaceX's profit is guessed at 0.2%. I like Musk, he's a visionary, but I wonder how this modern day Howard Hughes can keep it all going.
These companies are both startups, which by design run at a loss initially to scale out to where they can make a profit. I'd say SpaceX is probably doing well now with Falcon 9 taking over a huge percentage of the market, launching more by themselves than every other country except China. Tesla is still in expansion mode, with 2018 production exceeding all previous years combined. This year will add another 80% or so on top of that. That's rapid expansion in anyones language, let alone a manufacturing company, let alone an auto manufacturing company.
I can't seize to be impressed by that Falcon landing footage. It's something that seems so simple, but was not possible until computing power got as powerful as it is now. I am still amazed.
Just like I was amazed by the Segway when it came. So simple, right? And now we have like the Boston Dynamics uncanny-valley -bots because of that computational sensor monitoring balance stuff. Amazing all of it.

Uhmm no entertainment? and High stress level?
Well this video is just a giant PR stunt for SpaceX.

I love OR and specifically, the TSP. You can even make art with it!

I work for Elon, I am an engineer who often contributes to Neuralink's manufacturing. This video actually explains a lot about how and why things are done.
This is a great video. You did mention that the SpaceX lines are "highly automotized". I'd say "automated" would be a better word there.
How is this not the case for tesla?

zolikoff of 20 year old stuff?
Okay. Imagine a reliable $2000 car and a $200 gaming pc.
You can get plenty reliable cars for 2000$, especially in the US and UK. a $200 gaming pc is a stretch, especially including accessories. For double you could get a Intel CPU with HD4000, which plays csgo nicely.. for 3x200$@, you can get a proper setup for playing games such as BF1 @ >60FPS @FHD including accessories. Put in another 50-100$, and you'll be doing it at 120FPS on low-medium settings with a 144hz monitor. You can easily play BF2, CSS and other 10 year old games with a gaming setup that costs 200$ total! Check out scrapyardwars lol

_The problem with the space launch market is that it is not a consumer market. Government buy rocket launchers and they don't care about price nearly as much as people, since it's not the decisions makers money. The US Air Force decides they need to launch a certain number of satelites each year and they'll pay whatever it takes._
But from where comes the US budget, if it is not from taxation and through dealing treasury bonds? I heard once the US Air Force knows how to squach a penny. There are some information that is missing right there. Anyway, a correct public spending is a national interest, is an interest to every tax payer!
Alternatively, just take less money from the public and let them decide how to spend it themselves.
absolutely ;)
Odisséia Evolutiva,
I don't see how Musk's offer to save NASA 80% of the money they were going to spend is a criticism of Musk.
Troodon,
While everyone on the political spectrum opposes government waste, there are benefits to forced taxation.
He said:
The problem with the space launch market is that it is not a consumer market. *Government buy rocket launchers and they don't care about price nearly as much as people, since it's not the decisions makers money* >> which implies that the now possible savings to the military launchings wouldn't be necessarily accounted, and then former expensive dealings would keep happening.
Odisséia Evolutiva,
Yes, I heard that part.

Elon Musk is the man that everyone aspires to be, and I love that. His mere existence proves that not only will smart and ethical business always be successful, but can also be incredibly profitable in a world where big businesses try their damndest to generate as much profit out as possible.
I just wish more businesses took notes from the guy. Currently big businesses are debating whether or not to side with the Chinese government's tyranny just because it nets them slightly more profit. Such a business practice can only lead to distain for such companies and thus their eventual collapse.

How can you not love Elon Musk, this guy will one day be the richest and most efficient person on planet earth

I like Musk, he's a visionary, but I wonder how this modern day Howard Hughes can keep it all going.
It took a few months but I’d say both Tesla and SpaceX are doing pretty well for themselves now.
