At your height you would make a good AFL ruckman. After every goal, out of bounds or stoppage in play the umpire usually bounces (sometimes throws up) the ball up and the two opposing ruckmen tap down the ball (similar to a basketball center ball up) to their team mates. One American basketballer, Mason Cox has made the transition to playing Aussie rules football in the AFL. There are several other international players from various other sports that have played in AFL.
Thank you all for sharing this information with an American guy like me! I’m honestly learning a lot about this sport and have crazy respect for these athletes they’re beasts!!
Jak3 Mart0 I’m sure the Grand Final for many people is strongly associated with Springtime down there I’m guessing? Like it doesn’t truly feel like Spring until the Grand Final is on? Haha that’s how I imagine it
A couple of things from the video - When they show the scoreboard, they mean goals, behinds, and total score. So when they show Collingwood's score, they mean 20 goals (worth 6 each), 10 behinds, (worth 1 each), and a total score of 130. Same goes with Carlton. - When they explain marking the ball, that actually just means any time someone catches a ball on the full after it has been kicked by any player on the field. The marks showed are some of the best in recent years, but only a handful of players are skilled enough to leap like that and hold those marks consistently. - Every week the AFL selects a mark of the week and goal of the week, with each entry being nominated for mark of the year or goal of the year. If a player wins either one, they get a pretty cool prize (I think it's a car?). Those awards are presented alongside the Brownlow Medal, which is the equivalent of the MVP. Umpires vote each match for the best 3 players on the field, and the player with the most votes at the end of the season wins the most prestigious award in the AFL! (unless they've been suspended for breaking the rules, you should watch 'Andrew Gaff's hit on Brayshaw', it was pretty nasty!) - Hope you actually get into this sport a little and watch the Grand Final that's coming up! It would be awesome to see the sport played more regularly around the world, and hopefully you'll be able to get down to the MCG for a match one day!
Mason is very good. Genuinely good dude too. Jason Holmes was the first born and bred American to play. He's not in the AFL anymore, but theres some cool videos about his journey to the AFL and then his eventual debut. His brother Andre plays for the Buffalo Bills in the NFL
The top 8 teams have been playing finals (play offs) since the beginning of September and the Grand final (super-bowl) will be played on the 29th September at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
@@NepDaStep Can you run 13 Kms? We sent Simmonds to you to your NBL draft and he took pick one for Philadelphia (too bad he got injured) His second option was to be Collingwood's Ruckman.
Its cool watching you guys react to this sport and how big it is. To be honest I live in Western Sydney and AFL is no where near as big here as it is in the rest of the country. I went on holidays in Melbourne and it was like someone flicked a switch on the weekend and put everyone in a footy shirt. Even my wife and I were surprised and we live in Aus. Its massive around the country. We have a game called rugby league (which don't really care for myself), which is bigger than AFL in NSW, but not even close to AFL on a national scale.
Another Note, If you score a goal you the ball returns to center fro another ball up. If you kick a behind the defenders get an unimpeded kick from the goal square to resume play.
The AFL Grand Final is at the end of the month if you are wondering who will play it will be between 2 teams but there are the semi-finals first Richmond Vs Collingwood and Westcoast vs Melbourne then winners off those game will go into the AFL Grand final
All good Hope it this one helped you out :) & one things some guys on youtube get confused on that final score layout. It's setup as the Final Score said Collingwood 20 10 130 that means 20 goals 10 behinds = 130 points.
Thanks for reacting to this dude! I subbed. Yeah the finals started this week and the Grand Final will be September 29th. I go for the Richmond Tigers, who are expected to win this years premiership. You should pick a team if you keep reacting to AFL videos hahaha all the best.
Ricky Nardella thanks for watching again Ricky! I just might end up picking a team then lol. I’m about to drop another AFL video in about 30 mins so stay tuned bro💪
this was the first footy youtube reaction I watched and I just seen the video recommended on the last footy reaction I watched. Turns out I went on to watch a lot of these
We're in the semi finals right now, Collingwood vs Richmond and West Coast Eagles vs Melbourne Demons, grand final is next week on the 30th of September (always falls on the last Saturday in September). My team is the demons and we haven't won a premiership since 1964, but this is the year of the demons!!! Carn Melbourne!!!
One fact for you - a mark is what they call a regular catch. When a player uses their opponent as a springboard to jump higher, it’s called a “spectacular mark” or “specky”
Hey bro, glad your taking a look into our great game. Surely you would have heard about that boy from Texas Mason Cox best on ground effort the other night. you should react to the highlights of that game. Richmond v Collingwood prelim final
I didn't see if anyone clarified the bouncing in addition to the brief mention in the video, but basically when you decide to run with the ball as opposed to passing (hand-balling) or kicking, there is a "travel" rule sort of like basketball has. At least every 15 metres (ie, about 16 yards) the ball must be bounced or otherwise touch the ground. Naturally it's the umpire's judgment when this rule is infringed and you do occasionally get a generous interpretation of the rule. There is a technique to successfully bounce the ball on the run, but with it's oval shape, there's not too much margin for error before it can all go wrong. Of course the pro players are expected to be able to do it in their sleep.

As a tall yankyou should check out Mason Cox ,he plays for Collingwood. Ex US College basketball. Great find. Im a Giants fan but you can appreciate quality.
Thanks for uploading this bro... I think I have clear image on how the game works now!? You seem to be doing well with Aussie Crowd(subcribers)man !! 😜😂
You might have to come down under and try out, some top basketballers have made it into the team I follow.. checkout the Adelaide Crows Hugh Greenwood.. He played basketball over in the states and now is a gun player for us... This game is more then a sport for us aussies, its a religion over here :)
I've converted over to being an AFL fan from being a die-hard rugby league supporter as i hail from traditional rugby league state of Queensland... I still support rugby league but am more into AFL nowadays... some fun things i found about AFL: 1) its played on an oval field which means alot of variety and things happening compared to guys running up and down and tackling each other on a square rugby league field...where everything is pretty much predictable...AFL however has alot of unpredictability 2) At the start of the game all teams run through banners that are created by their dedicated supporter group fans.. 3) Generally seating behind each ends of the goal posts are designated for the home team fans and the opposition team fans... these groups of fans are known as "cheer squads"...they carry flags, large banners, and big pompoms which they wave around when their team scores a goal (kicked through the middle posts)...or they wave around and boo to distract the opposition team from kicking a goal.. 4) each teams club song is played as they run out onto the field (and through the banners)..the good thing is at full time - the winning team's song is played again...even if its a visiting opposition team - their song is still played, allowing the fans to have a few minutes of celebration...how awesome is it to have your team's club song played at the home ground of a hated team? its awesome because you can really rub crap in and bask in the moment of victory... 5) its a fashion thing - its pretty cool going to a game as fans will wear scarves and beanies, or hoodie jackets, have their face painted or even dress up... 6) generally when at the game you don't know how long is left in the quarter, the clock that ticking and on display near the scoreboard is only timing how long has progressed in that quarter...so being at the game its full of suspense and being on the edge of your seat, especially in the 4th and final quarter and your team is up by 5 points - you don't know how long is left and so you are hoping and praying the final siren sounds before the opposition scores a goal... however the coaches sitting up in the coaches boxes in the stadium (with a birds eye view of the game), actually have TVs showing the live game and how long is left before the quarter ends... when you are watching the game at home on TV, there is a timer on there showing how long left in the quarter...however this is not so live at the game...which makes it interesting and fun... 7) once you have been introduced to afl - its like a religion! you are hooked and cant get enough! trust me - i was a loyal rugby league fan, i still follow rugby league but i would pick watching an AFL game any day over rugby league...
theres actually an American player who plays on the team I go for ( Collingwood ) he's names Mason Cox you should really check him out, its amazing how he gained a passion for an Australian sport from the other side of the world.
Watch out for Mason Cox .....Really tall american guy who plays for a team called Collingwood(Their nickname "The Magpies") All of our AFL teams have thr own nicknames for that particular side ....For example Essendon "The Bombers" ......Sydney "The Swans" ......Brisbane "Brisbane Lions" etc etc ......Anyway u will get the idea as u keep watching more n more of our AFL Videos 😉😆😆
Yes ...If the ball hits the post or is touched by the opposition player...Its called a "Behind" which is worth 1 point When the ball does hit the post ....We generally call it a poster lol 🤣🤣🤣 Our Grand Final games normally r around August/September ...Sometimes may roll into October but not often 🙂
At 6'10" tall, you'd be highly sought after. They'd teach you to play the game if you've got any ball coordination. You could be a ruckman or a full-forward that just marks & kicks goals because at the end of the game when everyone else is exhausted you're still 6'10" tall. Jumping at the end is incredibly taxing. There's an American NBA player that plays for Collingwood, Mason Cox. He's about an inch taller than you but has become a very good footballer...
And people were saying Pies need to get rid of him at the end of last year......."The experiment has failed" lol He learnt the game in 2015 and is still learning a lot about it.....give him a break, Now look at him haha, helped to win us a prelim final.
You must watch the womens AFL and look at Tayla Harris's kicking style, it is the best. The intensity of the womens it brilliant and these women ate just as talented as the men.
West Coast Eagles AFL champions of 2018. Even gave Collingwood a 28 point head start. And the Eagles still won. Go the Eagles, we're flying high. Sucks to be a Colllingwood fan. Poor Eddie.
you might do a reaction to todays Grand Final. was a hell of a game, littetally decided only in the last 2 minutes. but i wanted to let you know about Mason Cox, a Texas kid, playing college hoops that went to an AFL combine in the States and gpt drafted to play for Collingwood Magpies. he is now given the title American Pie (pie being short for mag'pie'}. here is a story, i think it would make an interesting story to follow, he had a great transition and mega year on ground. www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/american-pie-collingwood-s-improbable-key-forward-20180920-p50537.html thanks
It is good, mate. It's the most popular code of football in Australia after AFL. This is rugby league. Not rugby. League is the 13 man game. Rugby fields 15. Here's a video for you. I hope you enjoy it. th-cam.com/video/zeMQhRl2Sow/w-d-xo.html
Good reaction mate! Do you think you could react to gaelic football and hurling? Two sports we have here in Ireland, gaelic football is a little bit like aussie rules (you get some Irish players going down to play there). Here's a highlight video I have made for gaelic football - th-cam.com/video/YzTJo9KibZk/w-d-xo.html and here is highlights of this years All-Ireland Hurling final: th-cam.com/video/VUSZD4awiLo/w-d-xo.html
3:23 well it’s awesome when done right. What’s not so awesome is boys who think they’re so cool jumping on top of you and pretending to take a “specky” (slang for spectacular mark) for no real reason at all and crashing you to the ground and digging they’re shoes into you’re back. From experience and living with 3 brother it really hurts. But yes when done correctly it looks pretty cool.
They don't really explain the scoreboard They give the example: Collingwood 20 10 130 But they don't explain this It is goals (six points), behinds (1 point), and then total. SO it's 20 goals = 10 points = 130 ((20x6)+(10x1))=130
Watching a whole game will give you a better sense of the skills and drama. I hope it is a close game for you. You can check times on afl.com.au . Cheers
We all learn how to fight at the age of 5 down here. It's so we can deal with all the deadly animals trying to kill us. Playing football and trying to hurt each other is fun and comes natural to us down here.
Australia is a bit weird when it comes to footy were very divided by state to what code of footy you support like my home state of Queensland we have two afl teams but afl is not very popular its never shown on mainstream tv its always on secondary channels in my state rugby league is the more popular sport the same as in New South Wales as well
I wouldn't say "not very popular". Maybe "not as popular" as league in QLD. But after three Lions Premierships, it has definately grown. AFL's popularity in QLD is bigger than League's popularity in AFL states (the majority of Australia). NRL wins the TV viewers battle, but AFL has 10 times the crowds because AFL people actually go to the games.
yeah thats fair but don't think its right to say they have ten times the crowd especially in Brisbane last time i went to a lions game the gabba was virtually empty compared to a broncos game
i am not disputing at all simply stating that Australia when it comes to football it is divided by state if you move to QLD your not going to have huge crowds at the AFL as compared to League but if you go to Melbourne or South Australia of Course you are
You can now do a video Cricket as well..2nd Biggest sport in Australia and Biggest by no. Of Players.. Especially on T20 Cricket and Australia's Big Bash League #justsaying
It's getting bigger in the USA now..There exists a group called the USAFL with over 40 cities playing ..There is even a national championship ..For the Collingwood Magpies in the AFL is a Texan born player called Mason Cox . He was an ex college basketballer who now plays in the elite AFL and is playing finals this year ..Look out for him ..Here's a recent interview on a football tv show th-cam.com/video/oqrNrhDLLF8/w-d-xo.html He's a bit taller than you ..at 211 cm ..or 7 ..ft..Here's a little bit about Americans who play in the USAFL stateside th-cam.com/video/FbcwJd2gKbI/w-d-xo.html
They run around like maniacs for almost120 minutes. Four quarters of 20 minutes each, plus time on of up to 10 minutes on each quarter. In a game they can cover up to 18 km of running. The grand final is usually around 100,000 people. That's council capacity for safety. It's hard to get a grand final ticket, and if we had a stadium big enough we could get 200,000. Fourth largest sports attendances in the world, but we have less than 30 million people. If they calculated the attendances per head of population, no sport in the world would get close to matching our attendances. Established in 1858, by cricket players wanting something to keep fit in the winter time, our game is older than soccer, rugby, American football, etc. You may ask why is AFL not an international game. The answer lies in geography. It was easy for soccer to spread throughout the conjoined countries in Europe, whereas Australia is an island. You're not allowed to push another player in the back, so if you fly for one of those spectacular marks, but you don't catch the ball, a free kick will be awarded against you for in the back. You'll eventually come across a "check side" or banana kick, where players have been forced up against the boundary line next to the goalposts, but they can kick the ball around corners like a banana. Nine-year-old kids can do that with ease. In just about every suburb of every town in Australia, there are local leagues. Under 9s, 12s,14s,19s, and seniors. Those kids are always dreaming and striving to get noticed by talent scouts to try out for the AFL.
Eagles won the grand final for this AFL (; (I've lowkey been wearing Eagles merch everyday for about a month, went to the finals & prelims but sadly the trip to the MCG is too hard atm) GO EAGLES!!

Philip Andrew thanks bro, I’d have to ask Cox for some advice on the transition !
Interesting...didn’t know anything about this game before. I can see why it’s popular. These athletes are skilled, energetic, & brave.
Its an old game too. Aussie rules football was first codified in 1858.

You might have to come down under and try out, some top basketballers have made it into the team I follow.. checkout the Adelaide Crows Hugh Greenwood.. He played basketball over in the states and now is a gun player for us... This game is more then a sport for us aussies, its a religion over here :)
Its so cute seeing americans react! Please do more reacting to AFL
Grand final is 29th of September this year.
I've converted over to being an AFL fan from being a die-hard rugby league supporter as i hail from traditional rugby league state of Queensland... I still support rugby league but am more into AFL nowadays... some fun things i found about AFL:
1) its played on an oval field which means alot of variety and things happening compared to guys running up and down and tackling each other on a square rugby league field...where everything is pretty much predictable...AFL however has alot of unpredictability
2) At the start of the game all teams run through banners that are created by their dedicated supporter group fans..
Too bad he plays for collingwood
The afl grand final for 2018 is on the 29th or 30th of September
the 29th in Aussie time
Watch out for Mason Cox .....Really tall american guy who plays for a team called Collingwood(Their nickname "The Magpies")
All of our AFL teams have thr own nicknames for that particular side ....For example Essendon "The Bombers" ......Sydney "The Swans" ......Brisbane "Brisbane Lions" etc etc ......Anyway u will get the idea as u keep watching more n more of our AFL Videos 😉😆😆
Super helpful and informative of you to share more info with me about your sport thanks Leanne
@@NepDaStep U r very welcome 🙂
Yes ...If the ball hits the post or is touched by the opposition player...Its called a "Behind" which is worth 1 point
When the ball does hit the post ....We generally call it a poster lol 🤣🤣🤣
Our Grand Final games normally r around August/September ...Sometimes may roll into October but not often 🙂
Let me know your favorite AFL team in the comments!
Adelaide Crows ❤️💛💙 #weflyasone
PAFC
Adelaide Crows
Collingwood is life ⚫️⚪️⚫️⚪️
Sydney Swans!
NepDaStep, come holiday in Australia, watch a game live at the MCG, would make a great vid..
I’d love too, that’d be awesome !
2:27 This is called a Handball
Love how he was saying it like the person was a baby
The grand final is on the 29th of September
I'll try to react to it! Thanks!
Let’s go Eagles!!!
Mark Blakeley tomorrow and eagles are gonna win
You must watch the womens AFL and look at Tayla Harris's kicking style, it is the best. The intensity of the womens it brilliant and these women ate just as talented as the men.
The grand final this year is Saturday 28th September
Cool video
thanks bro🤘
The end of this month is the grand final 29th September (my birthday) :)
If you would like to understand more rules about the AFL go to this video for more information th-cam.com/video/Dtmu-1kMFZw/w-d-xo.html
West coast and collingwood are playing in the grandy tomorrow
you should check out 'Roll out the barrel' biggest kicks in the AFL
I’ll react to that!👍🔥
Who is everyone going for in the grand final? Collingwood or west coast?
I'm going for Collingwood
John Harradine eagles all the way
Can you do one video for each team for the clubs best players moments if you can find them
Finals always in September and Grand Final end of September every year
West Coast Eagles AFL champions of 2018. Even gave Collingwood a 28 point head start. And the Eagles still won.
Go the Eagles, we're flying high.
Sucks to be a Colllingwood fan. Poor Eddie.
Congrats on the victory!
hey, you should react to Best & Worst Hits, Bumps & Fights in Women's AFL 2017 AFLW. Also up the PIES!!!!
I’ll give it a look thanks for suggesting Ineka
you might do a reaction to todays Grand Final. was a hell of a game, littetally decided only in the last 2 minutes. but i wanted to let you know about Mason Cox, a Texas kid, playing college hoops that went to an AFL combine in the States and gpt drafted to play for Collingwood Magpies. he is now given the title American Pie (pie being short for mag'pie'}.
here is a story, i think it would make an interesting story to follow, he had a great transition and mega year on ground.
www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/american-pie-collingwood-s-improbable-key-forward-20180920-p50537.html
thanks
I’ve reacted to him a few times bro! Love seeing an American doing well in the AFL
Now check out the NRL. National Rugby League.
Sounds good bro
It is good, mate. It's the most popular code of football in Australia after AFL. This is rugby league. Not rugby. League is the 13 man game. Rugby fields 15. Here's a video for you. I hope you enjoy it. th-cam.com/video/zeMQhRl2Sow/w-d-xo.html
if your tall, quick and dont mind a few knocks and bumps you should play. there are teams in the US. and maybe you can be the next Mason Cox.
Yessir!!💪
Fact: Hawthorn have secret extra players known as "umpires" who like to pay any free kick when possible
Grand final is next weekend. Will probably be Melbourne vs Richmond
Yep.....Melbourne vs Richmond is right........oh wait haha
This is some really unique content.
They don't really explain the scoreboard
They give the example: Collingwood 20 10 130
But they don't explain this
It is goals (six points), behinds (1 point), and then total.
SO it's 20 goals = 10 points = 130
((20x6)+(10x1))=130
The US has it's own amateur Aussie rules league... look them up at USAFL.com... They also have a Facebook presence.
AFL gf is on September 29, or the last Saturday of September each year.
Some of These players run about 15 to 19 km in a game
Love your show, G’Day from an Aussie Fan. 🇦🇺🇺🇸🇦🇺🇺🇸🦘🦘🦘
Can you react to 2018 grand final highlights after it has happened?
grand final last saturday in sept
Thanks! I plan on watching !!
Watching a whole game will give you a better sense of the skills and drama. I hope it is a close game for you. You can check times on afl.com.au . Cheers
Thank you Maggs Gorilla🤙🏽🇦🇺
Good vid
thanks!
We all learn how to fight at the age of 5 down here. It's so we can deal with all the deadly animals trying to kill us. Playing football and trying to hurt each other is fun and comes natural to us down here.
mate there's USAFL you should look into it
WEST COAST EAGLES
CencerousV ayy they’re gonna win tomorrow
4ouR6iX and they did :D
Best game in the world...
In my day no interchange players ..only 2 reserves and if you took a player off the field he could not go back on
Australia is a bit weird when it comes to footy were very divided by state to what code of footy you support like my home state of Queensland we have two afl teams but afl is not very popular its never shown on mainstream tv its always on secondary channels in my state rugby league is the more popular sport the same as in New South Wales as well
Definitely love the Aussie rules man it’s an awesome sport
I wouldn't say "not very popular". Maybe "not as popular" as league in QLD. But after three Lions Premierships, it has definately grown. AFL's popularity in QLD is bigger than League's popularity in AFL states (the majority of Australia). NRL wins the TV viewers battle, but AFL has 10 times the crowds because AFL people actually go to the games.
yeah thats fair but don't think its right to say they have ten times the crowd especially in Brisbane last time i went to a lions game the gabba was virtually empty compared to a broncos game
Well that's just Brisbane...when you go nationally, the AFL has crowds the NRL could only dream of.
i am not disputing at all simply stating that Australia when it comes to football it is divided by state if you move to QLD your not going to have huge crowds at the AFL as compared to League but if you go to Melbourne or South Australia of Course you are
Just out of interest, a lot of AFL players love to follow US Basketball.
Glad you like the game, it's fkn epic once you get into it.
Cheers
Deep Bass I’m getting back into AFL and was thinking of doing basketball reactions once the AFL season ends
Search AFL last 2 minutes. Greatest finishes to games
I'll be sure to look it up!
thanks
Those kids are always dreaming and striving to get noticed by talent scouts to try out for the AFL.
you would not be able to play at afl level but u can play at reginal level and i go for geelong cats
Tigers 🐯 pre-lim final this coming Friday grand final week after its going to be huge 💛🖤💛🖤
North Melbourne
Port Adelaide
CARN THE WEAGLES
On average, AFL players run an impressive 12-14 kilometres per game; some exceptional players can even surpass the 20 kilometre mark.
Eagles won the grand final for this AFL (;
(I've lowkey been wearing Eagles merch everyday for about a month, went to the finals & prelims but sadly the trip to the MCG is too hard atm)
GO EAGLES!!
Check out my reaction to it here(: th-cam.com/video/7iROX0PyFLE/w-d-xo.html
