Arriving at this as someone who ignored John Major as Prime Minister, full of young spunk that I was, and even today am still not enamoured with some of the economic policies he extolled in his prime, I have to say that that was a profound speech. As others have said, a reminder to us as to how far our politicians have shrunk, and perhaps how good a statesman he was. Alas, as sensible the words were, I don't think they'll be appreciated until, perhaps 2030, judging by the situation we find ourselves in and exactly for the reasons as described in Sir John's (can I retract and say Mr Major's) speech. A puzzle.

An excellent analysis of where the UK stands, particularly in his criticism if Brexit. It's a pity the Brexit cultists won't have the patience or thinking capacity to even give his words a first thought. However the impact of Brexit will most certainly make them think, but I doubt they'll blame themselves or the ones they mistakenly put their faith in. Time will see Brexit as a dreadful mistake and only new, hopefully more informed generations will improve our position.

Having to admit to the english people that they are no longer a super power actually gives the people the ability to relinquish the archetypes of the past that constrain them and create a new dream and vision of the future for your society. It takes great bravery to break an archetype and create a new casting mold for your people. In the absence of a healthy reality I admire your striving to create a new reality with new archetypes for your people. I wish you all the best and well done on your bravery.

Now is actually the greatest time for a united Ireland, in the same way that--despite Hancock saying it isn't the time--Coronavirus is the ideal time for nurses and other NHS workers to force the government to treat them fairly.
Scotland and Ireland need to extract everything they can get their hands on from the Tories, because they may never have another chance; if they rally around the Tories, they'll only get told "no" once things go back closer to normal.
Because as Edward Carson once said in 1921, "What a fool I was! I was only a puppet, and so was Ulster, and so was Ireland, in the political game that was to get the Conservative Party into Power."

Never thought i would ever agree with and admire a tory politician so much.
We made much fun of John Major when he was in power, but how we now miss someone like him!
As i listen, he goes through EVERYTHING that is now SO wrong.
Painfully evident how the standards, quality, intelligence, sens of responsibility, gravitas of some of our elected politicians have now dropped.
Not just in UK of course. USA has been prime example.
Thank goodness the USA has restored matters, but only just.
The likes of Boris Johnson and Trump have attracted voters, but with disastrous consequences.
We so need to learn from the tactics of such 'politicians' to make politics and civic duties accessible and attractive to less educated people.
This starts in schools but also social media, workpkaces, eating places, popular artists, tv stars, cookery gurus, so called 'influencers'...
All in the public domain have a duty to educate.
    Most have kids after all!

Very refreshing to hear it straight. Does this speech not reveal that it is in Scotland's long term interest to leave the UK and aim to regain some of those benefits that John Major highlights the UK are now losing through leaving the EU? The future painted here for the UK is not bright. If as some would say has been concretely demonstrated through Brexit, the Scottish people feel they have had little to no effectual voice in shaping the UK's political direction or future, what are their incentives to stay? And if complacency and nostalgia are what has put the UK where it now is then how heartening for those seeking independence to see fewer and fewer in Scotland fostering those beliefs in a past that never was while more and more look forward and outward to a fairer and more progressive future.

Stronger together? perhaps - but nobody ever asked me if I cared to be the strongest.

He articulated all that many of us have thought or concluded, in a way that, if the mendacious incompetents in Gov listened, would pierce their hearts with a conviction of treason. Oh for the leadership & wisdom of a Major, Blair, Grieves, Clark, Reid, D. Milliband & H. Benn.

I had almost forgotten what it means to listen to calm and coherent politics. Presented by a politician of experience and calibre. I fear that it will be a considerable time before a sufficient number of the population come to accept the reality of Brexit both for the country and in their own lives. By that stage I rather think that some changes will be irreversible. I can only hope that, nevertheless, the damage caused - for damage is what the effect will be - is of an order which will not prevent those in government at the time being able to set about a meaningful restoration exercise.

This is the the only Prime Minister in UK and English history who successfully has run a minority government over a long period - and, despite that, roughly handling the Militant Tendency MPs (now the ERG) who cynically thought they could exploit his government's weakness by blackmailing him (even naming them "bastards", which in the 1990s seemed pretty shocking to everyone, in our naive innocence :)). Also, the man whose evidence almost single-handedly defeated the Government's 2019 attempt to prorogue the parliament (if only because Messrs Rees-Mogg and the other two government ministerial cowards were unwilling to say anything to the court that might result in them being cross-examined by professionals; in turn, because those gutless chancers failed to contradict Major's evidence with their own, the Supreme Court's decision became very easy)
Finally (I understand) the only PM other than Winston Churchill to have been knighted by the Queen. In this lecture we see why... (at least after the first 10 minutes which is pretty damn boring!)

Ironic and tragic in way that the best and most wise politicians tend to be those who have served their time in public office, gained vast experience but have been cast asunder or retired. Ken Clarke being purged from the Conservative party was unforgiveable, and politicians like Major, Blair (I know, I know) Brown have so much to give. Theresa May even, suddenly seems a wise owl after her leadership experience. Instead we have younger politicians burning with ambition rather than idealism and lacking the necessary experience and guidance to flourish. Look at the current cabinet, a collection of nodding dogs if ever there was one, under the leadership of a PM whose only interest is 'having' the job, not 'doing' the job. Rudderless government bent on survival rather than governing and any views like these from Major are probably laughed at.

A thoroughly dishonourable speech by a man who evidently has no time for democracy. In Government he was not honest about the Maastricht agreement that was inexorably to convert a common market into a federal state, and did not consult the people on this major change to our system of government. It's astonishing that he still questions the legitimacy of the Brexit decision, despite its endorsement in the Referendum and two general elections! And it's pretty outrageous that he makes this speech at the very point that negotiations on a trade deal have reached a critical stage; or perhaps he wants them to fail?

Although, I did agree with much of what John Major said. I found it interesting that he only talks positively about Great Britain in the last few minutes after spending the majority of his speech painting a dismal picture. We could spend time debating questions such as ‘Have the British people been lied to?’ or ‘Did Brussels make a mistake not listening to Britain’s complaints?’. Of course the blame game serves a purpose, we can learn from how we have arrived at this destination. However, we need a plan of action and rallying to get us through these coming years not playing political cards of complaint and blame. The question is what is next? I’m not sure Boris even knows the answer to that questions and that is what is most terrifying of all.

Quite interesting, but I get no sense that Mr Major has any understanding of the forces that drove us into Brexit. He said nothing about Mr Cameron's negotiations with the EU, or the Greek debt crisis and the Euro, or "ever-closer union", or the widespread belief that the UK government is more democratically accountable than the EU, or the belief that EU policy is controlled by Germany, or that its goal is to erase the national identities of its members. Yet these are key issues which continue to motivate the clique which controls the present UK government.

Very good - especially the irritation at the marginalisation and demonisation of people of a Remain persuasion. A world where 'you lost get over it' becomes a political argument, and screaming-toddler imagery the go-to, belittling legitimate points of view. It does not induce a mood of co-operation or acceptance. I hope the architects are ready for a backlash.
