      I am not a native English speaker, but I find the subjunctive mood quite easy. It needs a little bit of concentration so that you can learn the rules by heart and of course it requires a lot of practice on your part.

      It's a very tricky subject because native speakers take many liberties with it. You don't really need it for daily communication. If you're doing a test and need to know it well, then it will help to make some notes for yourself and then try to teach it to someone else with your own examples. That's the most effective way of mastering anything.

      @@AngloLinkEnglish Thank you very much for this lesson! The past subjunctive is more or less straight forward. However, the present subjunctive was a new concept for me. I’ve seen these constructions before and... Well, I was thinking that someone has just forgotten the -s at the end of the verb. Now I know what it is. That’s a great idea about teaching someone else! Fortunately, I know some fellow-artists who have no idea about present conjunctive. I’ll spread the word! Thanks again! Meanwhile, I’ll watch other lessons on your channel.

    - If you want to make your recommendation simple say this: she should eat healthy food.
    - If you want to make a formal recommendation use the present subjunctive and say this: it is necessary that she eat healthy food.

    I've been speaking English alongside my native tongue for as long as I can remember and never know knew about the subjunctive mood. I also used to use it without realising it, eg. "If I*were* in your place."
    However, I was only introduced to the topic because of Spanish, as the subjunctive mood is a lot more prominent there.
    Very interesting how learning a new language improves your previously learnt languages!!

      @@AngloLinkEnglish hey, maybe you can help with another thing. I never know if I have to say "to me" or "for me" when I want to express opinion; for example, replacing "in my opinion". Should I say "for me your video is great"? Or "to me"...? Is there any difference? I know that in some cases "for" may mean benefit. Thanks in advance.

    • @AngloLinkEnglish
      @AngloLinkEnglish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wish I could give you a clear-cut answer, but I'm afraid I can't. As with all prepositions, things are vague with 'to' and 'for'. Sometimes, they both work: That's useful TO/FOR me. Sometimes, only one is correct: That sounds good TO me. That works FOR me.

    Great video! I have a quick comment on timestamp 5:00:
    I am a native Midwestern English speaker.
    We would actually say: I recommended he delays seeing a specialist.
    But in terms of actual pronunciation:
    I recuhmended he delays seein’ a specialist.
    The that is optional, but gives off a tone of formality or intelligence. It also functions as a signifier if soft power.

    A very good explanation of the English subjunctive. It can be very complicated for non-native speakers. I have a question related to the wishes and regrets about the past. Is the past perfect tense after I wish/If only considered a (remnant of the) subjunctive form? For example: I wish I hadn't eaten that much. Now I feel sick.
    If only I hadn't spent all my money on clothes.
    Thank you!

    • @AngloLinkEnglish
      @AngloLinkEnglish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!
      It is indeed! But, as the form is identical to Past Perfect for all pronouns, it's not worth labeling it differently, whereas in the case of Past Subjunctive, it offers an explanation for using 'were' instead of 'was'.

    I hope you can answer my question: Why did I find the following example in a grammar book? It's high time something WAS done about it. Would it be right if I say: It's high time something were done about it? Thanks a lot! I finally understood the subjunctive form!

    • @AngloLinkEnglish
      @AngloLinkEnglish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Larissa! Indeed, you can use 'were', and that would be grammatically more acceptable. However, as the Subjunctive is hardly used (especially in British English), it has become more common to use 'was' instead of 'were' with the exception of the expression 'If I were ...'

    It's true. The subjunctive in present is hardly ever used in British English. It would be: 'I recommend that she sees a specialist.'
    BUT we do used this in past. 'I recommended that she see a specialist.'
    Great lesson!

      Luvjoy Choker I am learning Spanish and they have it too and I hadn’t even realized in my first language (english) we use it as well. It’s not something we’re taught or think about, it just seeps into your brain when you’re young

    • @ianhinson2829
      @ianhinson2829 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I can tell, the subjunctive is an action that is the object of the sentence, ie. It is not the main action going on in the sentence.
      Eg. "I asked her to write it down."
      The subject "I" did the verb "asked" to the object "her" - but where does leave the verb "write"?
      In that sentence no one is actually doing any writing at that time. It's just the hypothetical / planned action that is being (in that sentence) requested of "her". So "write it" is kind of an object in its own right, not the main verb (which is "asked").
      I only had to find this out because I'm studying Spanish too (on TH-cam 🙂).

    Hi, teacher! I'd like to know what alternatives and sentences of your video I can use in American-English and what alternatives and sentences of your video I can use both in American-English and in British-English. I got these alternatives and sentences from your video:
    Alternative 1: Using the modal verb "should" (present & past):
    - It is necessary that they should be warned of the risks.
    - I recommend that he should see a specialists.
    Alternative 2: After expressions of importance: using "for..." + "infinitive with to"
    - It is necessary for them to be warned of the risks.
    Informal English (note):
    - It's necessary that they be warned of the risks.
    - It's necessary they are warned of the risks.
    - I recommended that he delay seeing a specialist.
    - I recommended he delayed seeing a specialist.
    I really thank you if you could answer my questions!

    • @AngloLinkEnglish
      @AngloLinkEnglish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All of them are correct, both in American and in British English.
      The 'should' form is more common in British English.
      The 'base verb' form is more common in American English.
      The other two forms are equally common in the two versions.

    Well done, Minoo! That is a brilliant explanation! If it would be appropriate to ask you? I have never encountered the verb "wish" in the perfect tenses, wherever it`s being searched. So I decided to design a phrase using it. "If I had wished I danced with her yesterday, I would have invited her then". Whether this phrase has grammatically been built correctly? Thank you in advance! Not to be bothersome, I promise not to take up your time again!

    • @AngloLinkEnglish
      @AngloLinkEnglish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, Eugene!
      Here, you're using the verb 'wish' as a synonym for 'want'. Therefore, the correct structure is 'wish to do': If I had wanted/wished TO DANCE with her ...
      'wish' + Subjunctive is indeed uncommon with the Past Perfect tense.

      As I mention in the lesson, the present subjunctive form = the base verb (infinitive without to).
      As I mention in one of the notes, in everyday spoken English, you can use the normal tense (upgrades), but not in formal written English.

    It is important that everyone explain subjunctive as clearly as you do. :) I learned something new today, thanks.
    P. S. I would have thought that British English used Present Subjunctive more than US English. On account Britts being more formal in their everyday lives.
    P. P. S. "When I
    used to live in France, were I to meet an intelligent man I immediately sought his company. If that
    be foolish ... Ah, I see you smile at that use of the subjunctive. I confess my weakness for that mood
    and for fine speech in general. A weakness that I criticize in myself, believe me... Smiling at the use of the subjunctive, in fact, proves your culture twice over
    because you recognize it to begin with and then because you feel superior to it." Camus - The Fall

      You're right; it's strange that Brits hardly ever use the Present Subjunctive while it's the more formal sounding option.

      I assume by 'here' you mean in the United States. That can indeed be the case. As I live in Britain, I don't often hear the subjunctive form especially in the negative form.
