Can You Comfortably Drive an Electric Car on a Long Trip Without Range Anxiety?

  • Today, we take a 2021 #KiaNiroElectric on a 150 mile road trip from Central PA to Baltimore MD and back up to Harrisburg, PA in a day. We stop at an #EVGo charging station and an #ElectrifyAmerica station to see the process it takes to charge an #ElectricCar and how reliable these networks are. #Tesla has had a huge head start with their #TeslaSupercharging stations, but has the competition managed to significantly improve over the years?

    Electric car skeptics will love this one. Especially those of you who believe you must have a Tesla to comfortably take long road trips. In this video, we test out an EVGo and Electrify America station that we've never been too. We put roughly 150 miles on this 2021 Kia Niro Electric in a day to find out just how reliable the other charging networks are. Oh, and the Kia Niro EV is a pretty easy electric car to live with on a daily basis.

      I test drove a jaguar I pace and went up to the mountains--60 miles--120 miles both ways--by the time i got to the mountains a warning sounded that I was not near a charging station and should head for one--it used up over 100 miles of use on a 60 mile trip--so yeah--i do not trust them yet.One thing I will mention is the car was nice and VERY Fast.I own a 2020 Stinger GT AWD 3.3TT and the jaguar felt just as fast as my stinger.

      @@khronin Going up a mountain uses way more electricity than driving on a flat surface (I can push a stalled car down the street when needed but pushing it uphill is waaay harder). Same idea when its cold outside and you need to run the heater. I get about half the range in the winter when its 30F out compared to range in the summer.
      The range guesstimate is only a guesstimate. If your driving conditions aren't going to be ideal then you definitely can't trust the guesstimate.

    What bothers me about these stations is the charging by minute shenanigans. Imagine having a vehicle that charges up to 100kw, a station that claims up to 90kw, and then gives you 50kw. That's not really acceptable and I can see shady business practices resulting in throttled charging speeds for the sake of milking you for more cash.

    What a lot of car reviewers do not take in to account when comparing cars to Tesla's is that trying to get work done on a Tesla is almost impossible in parts of the country. For me, the nearest repair center is 6 hours away. When you add that to the crappy build quality, makes the Tesla an absolute no go. I have 2 Kia dealers, more Ford dealers that I can count and a few Chevy dealers all within 15 min, so I know I will have support.

Your experience with Electrify America has been similar to mine unfortunately. The last one I visited off of i75 had just one of four stations working properly. And even then, in a favoring climate, I was only able to get the charger to supply 50KW despite the station being capable of 350KW and the Etron being able to receive up to 150kw. Hoping they get the bugs worked out on these. Awesome video though, very informative.

      For me EV’s are a hard sell. I own a 2020 Camry hybrid and live in Austin tx. I get 47mpg on the highway. To get from Austin to El Paso, which is the most western part of the state, is about 8 hours and just under 500 miles. I can get there on one tank if I did the speed limit and conditions were right. With a Tesla, I would need to stop to charge twice adding almost an hour or hour and a half to my total trip time. EV’a are a hard sell when you can get a large amount of range in a hybrid for thousands less than an EV, and it takes not even 5 minutes to fill up from close to empty to full.

      @mamadouaziza2536 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, very true but you are still polluting the air and burning through your money everytime you fill up..
      Obviously you are interested in EVs otherwise whats the point in watching this review? There will come a time when charging an EV will be faster and in the future ICE cars will be banned..
      Seriously, unless you have a supermodel, a winning lottery ticket and a bag of tricks at the end of your destination I don't see the rush unless its a life and death matter..

      Yeah, polluting the air for those 500 miles.. A Tesla is far quicker and faster and safer than your Camry hybrid. Tesla also offers excellent autonomous driving and full self driving in a stylish package..
      People need to begin educating on EVs and charging because once Tesla releases its sub compact EV and its pickup truck, the Legacy automakers are gonna be scrambling to hold onto sales and realize they need to start making more EVs.

    • @johnjames7712
      @johnjames7712 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mamadouaziza2536 no legacy automaker is afraid of Tesla currently. Tesla may be x amount ahead of the EV market, but they still lag behind in build quality, customer service, and the inability to sell in certain states through their direct to customer selling model.
      Also, autopilot isn’t “far ahead” or superior to other semi autonomous systems with other automakers. Tesla still requires you to shake the wheel or touch it to let it know you’re still there. Currently the only automaker that offers anything even remotely close to full self driving is GM with SuperCruise.
      ICE cars are way far away from being completely banned, they are still relevant to 95% of the population that needs a vehicle. EV’s will be mainstream soon, but that means someone would need to make an EV that can get well over 300 miles of range on a single charge, be able to charge from near flat to full in less than 10 minutes, and cost less than $30k. The tech is getting cheaper as the years go by but we aren’t completely there yet.
      I like EV’s and think they are the future, but we are at least 10-15 years away from it becoming a threat to ICE vehicles. The tech needs to be cheaper and be more affordable than your average vehicle.

BP Pulse used to be quite good but less so recently) who are quite reliable and very widespread. There really are plenty of them about, too. Now that the Electric Highway charging network is getting upgraded, you're looking at a plentiful and dependable system.

      Theoretically. But out on the road the cruise computer is quite good at minimizing power usage and maximizing recovery. I have, on more than one occasion, come down a long hill and had 1-2 miles more range than I started with, without the risk of building up too much speed. Especially good in urban areas where there's traffic. On my Niro EV I usually leave it on level 1 regen. That pretty closely simulates the speed loss of taking one's foot off the pedal in an ICE with an automatic transmission. Except instead of energy being wasted, it's being recovered and put back in my battery. I don't hypermile at all, but I have had a couple charges that easily could have exceeded the EPA range estimate if I had chosen to do so. Honestly the biggest thing you can do to extend the range on one of these is simply not use the climate controls.

      its really not that hard. There are like 2-3 major networks in most areas. So if you have time to waste, and willing to put on a few pounds when waiting to charge at each stop. 239 miles on a full charge, unless you have the Heater or A/C on. At this point less than 2% of cars sold are EV's... What happens when you pull up and all the chargers are full and you have to wait just to charge? As an a early adapter of all things green, I've had a Kona EV for 2+ years. I've reached the conclusion you can't really take a long trip with an EV without extensive range anxiety. The car itself varies considerably in electricity usage depending on road factors, such as hills, and it doesn't regenerate going downhill to match useage going up. So you may have a plan to refill at a certain mileage, but find you have to stop sooner. At that point, the closest charging station is likely NOT on your route, which means you often have to backtrack to find a station before running out. Unfortunately I have not found any of the app maps on the major EV stations (EVgo, Chargepoint, Electrify America) smart enough to detect whete you want to go and limit your to a station to your route. Google maps is usefull, but still behind the curve. (If anyone has found a map app that keeps you on route, please fill us in.) Then there's also what this video points out about the unreliabilty of charging stations. About 50% of the time a station isn't functional, requiring a call to customer service. The agents are often helpful, but there is only so much that can be remotely. Also, Ergonomically, the EV stations are often hard to use even if working. For example, most have their credit card machine low to the ground, so, if you go that route, you have to get on you knees to see if it's working, especially with sun reflection. Bottom line is, if you take a long trip, you have to plan frequent refueling stops.......enough that it's simply not practical to take the EV. For long trips, we take my wife's plug-in hybrid. I'm still glad I have my EV for all the reasons cited in this video, but there is still a LONG way to go before theyre fully practical.

Also, I'm typically getting about 4.4 miles per kWh. That said, I spend more than half my time in the city vs. the highway, and I typically don't drive over 70-72 mph on the highway

    Hmm. This video might have me doubting the wisdom of getting into EVs at all, which I was considering for my next car purchase. It's just a completely different world with a long learning curve. As a senior citizen, I'm not so sure this is a universe I'd be very comfortable traveling through, and I doubt my wife would be ready to set aside everything we've ever known driving and operating a car. The availability of chargers is perhaps iffy enough on the road, but when you finally get to one, and it doesn't work, that's really a bummer. I didn't think that was even a factor.
    Maybe a hybrid is the way to go, which was my first thought before considering an EV.

    Couple things to note... 1.) Left lane is passing only...
    2.) 250 max range means, in the winter when you have the heater and defroster on your range is 150 miles.
    3.) Kia and Hyundai are going thru motors faster than oil changes on their “ICE”. They are having major engine faults and destruction.
    5.) Build quality on a Kia is not $50,000 price tag.
    6.) Nissan Leaf is your competitor so a $40,000 Nissan Leaf usually only costs $10,000 after about 4-5 years later. Cost of ownership and depreciation kills you, welcome to negative equity or upside down on your loan.
    Electric cars are the future! This Kia is not a wise investment for the long run, nor is it ideal for a road trip. 30 cents a min, spend 10 mins and get an extra 15 miles of range? Not ideal...
