      Do you sale ? I'm looking to buy some but the ones I have found are, a baby for 75.00 to 100.00
      Or if you know someone who is looking to rehome. I live in the country , and I know they would love where I live.
      I have done a ton of research.
      It's just the pricing is killing me .
      Because I would love in the end to have at least 3..
      But also other types because I think that the kids around here would enjoy learning about them . I know I have .
      If you have any suggestions please contact me, sonyagjohnson1234@gmail.com

    Is a rock under the basking light okay? Are you’ saying a “basking rock “ like the electric ones that provide heat are no good?

    • @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG
      @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A natural rock under the basking light is fine as long as it's only warm to the touch and you check the temp and it's not too hot. Reptiles sometimes burn themselves without realizing it. An artificial basking rock made to keep them warm can be bad for that purpose.

  • @dhruvs.2310

    Hi is it enough to spray the shell and keep the ground moist to have a humid enclosure. I use coco fiber as the substrate.

    • @troyb4533
      @troyb4533 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dhruv Singh that's a good practice. You also want a fully enclosed enclosure to keep any heat/humidity in.
      These little guys need alot of moisture, so it may also be a good idea to spray the enclosure several times a day if you notice the humidity dropping.

    Great video! I have two sulcatas that are both from the same hatchlings and they are about two years old. So the 2 nine year olds are from the same batch of hatchlings? It's crazy how much bigger the male is compared to the female. I know it takes about 3-4 years to know which gender they are. When did you discover their gender?

    • @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG
      @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mikee Ta I didn't really pay attention to sex until the last couple years. Yes they are from the same batch. The female was kept in less than optimal conditions for the first few years, so she should be a bit bigger:)

    • @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG
      @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Simply correct their diet and their shell will develop more properly in the future. I will even out as they get older. My 10-year-old female had shell malformation when she came to me as a one or two-year-old. She looks great now.

    • @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG
      @MaritaDeLaPenaDTG  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. They need to be kept no lower than 60 or about 55 degrees minimum. You can do like a dog house with a heat lamp and a doggy door and then temp gun it to make sure it's warm enough. You can use hay to insulate and if they eat it, it will just give them extra calories to burn off.

    Okay so I have a sulcata and he is about a year and he lives in a little box with a light and a heating pad and I give him weekly baths and I feed him mostly Roman lecctus and regular red apples and he gets feed about 2 times a day and I take him out every once in awhile but em I doing this right ?

    • @laurie910
      @laurie910 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sophia Mata he needs to have as much room as you can give him. they get huge very fast! He needs to eat grass and weeds on a regular basis as well as a cuttlefish bone for calcium. NO fruit. occasional pumpkin, squash and watermelon rind as a treat. grape leaves and hibiscus flowers and leaves are great to feed them with their grass. they need a shallow dish of water at all times. they need to stay warm and have lots of sunshine.

    • @pinetreeYT
      @pinetreeYT 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everything Laurie said. Also, they like to watch football every weekend so yeah, there's that too.

    • @troyb4533
      @troyb4533 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to keep his enclosure nice and humid as well.
      These are a grassland species that hatch during the sahel wet season, they need to stay hydrated and in a humid environment.
      This will minimize pyramiding.
      They are a grassland tortoise. So grasses and weeds. You can mix alittle green in with the grass. But no fruit.

    Is there a way to make the shell shine like your 9 year old?

    • @DayNNyteDJs
      @DayNNyteDJs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was either wet or covered in oil. They don't shine like that. You can see her hand is wet.

      They had just had a good soak as they all should get regularly. it doesn't make them especially pretty though!

    Thank you for the video. That was very informative. I'm considering getting one , I live in Phoenix. Any help and suggestions, very much appreciated.

      It's very likely a sulcatta would do great in Phoenix and even be able to live outdoors much of their year. you should definetly get one.
