    I remember 35years ago, when I was a little kid and we used to see the whole fields just lit up with fire flies. A kid today would have no conception of it, really. The closest thing to compare would be a giant light show with LEDs attached to a flying drone swarm. Except it was nature. How much more beautiful must it have been in the 1800's? What else are we going to lose and have only stories for our kids? Oh man. That just bummed me out.

    • @zakiducky
      @zakiducky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even 10-15 years ago I’d see them all over as a kid. Nowadays, the only thing lighting up the night is all the artificial lights. No fireflies, barely visible stars...

    • @Inertia888
      @Inertia888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@zakiducky I remember them from 10-15 years ago and you're right, at least 10-15 years ago there were some left, pretty much none at all now. Just imagine 30 years ago. there were legit like swarms of them. in such a short time... i am sad about it. and kinda mad, but who do i blame? how can we fix this? I really don't know if we can. Maybe we could bring them back with science? Or would them lead to worse problems?

      @@Inertia888 I honestly don’t know. Hopefully we as a species can find ways to heal the damage, but when even rural areas are losing so much biodiversity, it’s hard to stop the bleeding.

      In a perhaps equally wet southern part of the U.S., in the warm & hot months it rains more and the chorus of frogs/toads resounds in the air. I've been calling the event a "Frog Party" for years, because typically they're mating when they're that loud. 😅

    I discovered one of the first cases of chytrid fungus in KY a few years ago. A forest ranger and I had it sent off for laboratory analysis where it was positively confirmed. It was infecting american toads, mainly affecting their glands on the backs of their heads. Causing them to kind of "melt" off, leaving a huge wound. It started out as just 1 specimen. Then we found more and more over the course of their breeding season (when they are most likely to be found in water) until an entire population was infected. I have since left herpetology (the study of reptiles and amphibians) and have taken up chemsitry, but I still think about this every day.

    I read the frogs end up dying because their skin gets thickened due the fungal infection. It results in an inability to absorb essential minerals, like salt, through their skin. (Frogs don’t drink)
    Mankind should study the osmosis process in frogs for new desalination methods.

    I found it selfish that people ask what an animal or plant does for them when asked to help save a species, as if a living thing's right to live is tied to how it benefits us. Life existed before we were around, it'll probably continue to do so when we are gone. We are not the center of the universe, everything has just as much a right to live as we do.
