Now you've gone and made me want a comic strip Bible. 😂😭 I'm in love with these drawings. I can't decide if I prefer color or not, but they're both gorgeous - especially God in His mandala.
It is common that the Harrowing of Hell shows Christ standing atop the vanquished Satan. In many such images, the locks and chains of Hell are also shown scattered. For an example, see our video on San Marco in Venice: smarthistory.org/saint-marks-basilica-venice/
I just love the way Dr Beth Doyle is so delighted and full of enthusiasm for every work of art she describes. I love sitting at her feet!
The Utrecht, and even more the Harley Psalter, always seem to me to have a high wind whipping through the images. The linear treatment is wonderful.
Wonderful - being able to compare and see how this changed over time. Thanks!

Why is Christ standing on someone when he is pulling Adam and Eve up from hell?

Why is it called the Utrecht Psalter? I know that Psalters were illustrated books of Psalms. Was it made in Utrecht?
Simply because that is the city where the Psalter is now kept.
at 3:00, Christ is pulling Adam and Eve out of Hell - but why is he literally shanding on somebody?!
That is the standard iconography of this scene, that someone is the devil.
