Personally, I prefer Save The Earth. I think it just feels better between all directionals being used, and the reduced knockback from basic attacks. I think the pace is better in Melee, with higher speed and less launch from powerful attacks, which allows more combos, but the options in Save The Earth for combat feels better.
It should be automatically unlocked. This is the Xbox version, and I've heard the Gamecube version may lack this feature, though I cannot confirm this.
