    Just a trick for using those map markers. Take a black fine marker and write the “color” on each one. I write the color name on the pocket clip. You can also take a safety pin and “scratch” or “engrave” the abbreviation for the color as well. In this way… when you are under red light… you can still have the ability to identify each specific color. I also always insert the map pens into the case in the same order. R, OR, YLW, GRN, BLU, PRP, BRWN, BLK

      @@jastrapper190, the correct listing of visible white light frequencies is
      Ultra violet , violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, infrared. No viable acronym or mnemonic can be made from that list.
      But reverse the order and the acronym of Roy G Biv becomes a mnemonic for remembering the spectrum.

    Very helpful. This information and kit will surly help our young'uns to up their game. We have practiced some basics together inside our sprawling subdivision and at wild camp locations near our Philippine home. We do not want our gang to become confused with too much information too soon. Adding some new concepts, a little at a time, and allowing them to master each step has worked in the past. I like what you have put together. Thank you Andrew, your video is much appreciated.

    Camo self adhesive bandage is super helpful for quickly camoing gear that you dont want sticky tape all over. It also comes in multiple colors so it can be switched out when going from one type of eniviroment to another. Plus it can be rolled back up & reused multiple times before it wears out.

    Think my first comment got auto deleted so I guess I’ll try again, Andrew should definitely check out Full Tang Tactical’s gear. They make what is in my opinion a far superior version of the admin pouch that you see him using in his vids. Another aspect of FTT’s stuff is that it’s all fully American made and sourced. If Andrew somehow ends up reading this I’d love to be able to patch him through to the owners if he has any interest.

    Andrew, I have a question. If I was to rotate my grid protractor so that the north/south line is lined up with the angle of declination and then draw a line on the protractor that covers the north/south line on the map (red maybe), then use that red line as a new north/south on the protractor. Wouldn't I have a constant and consistent angle of declination when plotting azimuths? As long as I was working with the same angle of declination I can use the same protractor. Cover the red line with clear tape maybe.

    One clarification about red light. It appears from what i heard listening to guys fighting in ukraine and the little scientific research i done on the matter is that red light is practically no less visible than white light.
    The presumed "stealth" red light gives seems to be a myth while the real reason it's use during night operations is vital is that red light doesn't reset the way in which our eyes adapt to seeing in the dark like white (or any other color) light does.

      Unfortunately it was a big pos

      the same experience with the same
      model same cammenga brand
      compass bought at a different place
      at a different time at a different part
      of the state. Luckily he had his compass failure during the daylight
      hours instead of the wee hours of
      nearly complete darkness like I did.
      It could have been a bigger problem

    Sir, I am idly wondering if a GPS/range finder can be conveniently found that will automatically record and transmit a target location without confusing the original GPS location. Possibly secret, I imagine, anyway. Also, soldiers should probably follow orders to the letter when told not to bring a map along? T Y.

    • @peterbogart4531
      @peterbogart4531 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sir, looking at security of communications, the old one-time pad system of encryption is possibly still the most secure. Just about any form of transmission can be intercepted somehow, so caution must be employed. Encryption of recon information can be just as important as the recon itself. Also, the smaller the recon unit, generally the less detectable. Scout sniper units of two soldiers may generally be the most successful number, with six being right at the upper limit. Beyond that seems being much more at risk of detection.

    Good video. Nothing particular to you but the whole ‘navigation’ part of preparedness doesn’t click for me. As a prepared citizen, I wouldn’t plan on travelling far from home and family and if I did it would be within 30 mins of home. I also dont have air support or backup platoon capability, therefore it just seems like more weight and bulk having maps, gps and compass. I plan for eliminating threats to me and my family as well as homestead defence, don’t want to look for trouble but eliminate it when presented. Not disparaging anyone, just the way I see it. Anyone else have input for use of nav tools for prepared citizen?

    • @landofwolves
      @landofwolves 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Compass, map and GPS receiver are also used to determine distance to targets, their location and terrain around then, so you can predict their movement related to obstacles, avenues of approach, key terrain.
      You are vastly overestimating yourself if you think you can eliminate even a bunch of "predatory peppers".
      There are many other things that may require you to move - chemical leaks in industrial or other incidents for example. Mobility=survivability.

    Everything should already be on your LBE. Do you really need pruning shears? A Swiss Army knife, multi tool or your combat knife should be able to handle that job. If I were doing recon I would want a better optic than that monocular. Military binoculars, or marine binoculars with either a distance mil scale, laser rangefinder and or a built in compass would be better, they can be used for both reconnaissance and navigation. I wouldn’t use a small map like that of less than 5x6 or 30 grid squares. It’s fine for a compass course but not an operation. Depending on how you were inserted, you may be a lot farther away from your objective. The vehicles or aircraft could give your presence away. So I would prefer t whole map sheet, if your GPS fails, and it may, you want to be able to egress the area and be able to find your way out. You also may need to extend your reconnaissance pass the small areas of those 30 grid squares. Maps are easy to destroy if needed.
    The lensatic compass is a great compass. I used it to navigate in Desert Storm. But I also had a backup wrist compass. Actually a couple. One was an issued wrist compass with a sighting window, the other was a simple wrist compass that I bought. I also used a small one attached to my watch.
    Orienteering compasses need to be good if you use them because the can leak oil and become useless.
