Is your USB cable grounded?

  • I jumped into a rabbit hole of reading into the USB grounding standard, what many a 'well actually' forum post had to say and then measured a number of my own cables + some Amazon reviews.

The beep tone from a multimeter is not a sufficient condition for a good shield. The USB specification mentions a 0.6 ohm plug-to-plug shield resistance. The multimeters generally beep if the resistance is lower than 10 ohms.

I fried three microprocessors on my diy keyboard before I started looking into this. All of my cables besides the ones that came with Google or Microsoft products have no shield grounding. Even ones from small retailers I trusted.

They aren't grounded for DC. That's could be good as it prevents ground loops. I would test again for capacitance. The ends could be capacitively coupled which would effectively be grounded for high speed signals.

On my HP laptop if I use a ground plug, the USB sheath is also grounded. Makes a difference when fooling around with RTL-SDR (usb radio receiver). Noise floor dropped 3dB. should apply equally to any low level signal processing hardware connected to a computer. But yes, you need to check your USB cables with a multimeter to see if the shield is connected and you need a 3 prong wall socket with ground.

Very cool, i have an RTL-SDR on a Pi 4 running OpenWebRX. I need to upgrade the antenna the SDR came with.

Sometimes I don't understand about most TH-camr's voice
When the screen is showing the Computer Display, the voice sounds more depth.
But when it shows regular camera, the voice sounds more flat.
Why do they even do that if they use the exact same Microphone?

In this case on screen is a usb mic and on camera was the phones mic. Im not a pro content creator with the right equipment, just trying to get some info out there.

Man I used to wonder what was the point from having that metal surrounding the cable on the inside (I was tweaking with stuff that use usb) now I know that I kinda killed many micro usb charging cables 🙂
