    Do you know a game with awesome UI?
    And which Blizzard gamed do you play? :D

      I don't play any Blizzard games...

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see. What's your goto game at the moment?

      I spend most of my time writing a perfect collision algorithm for the game that I'm designing. I've been at it all summer, and it provides entertainment when it isn't frustrating.

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, crazy. Aren't there already a ton of really good collision detection algorithms out there? Will it be a plugin for an existing engine or is it for your own engine?

    • @benjamimapancake6429
      @benjamimapancake6429 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's for my own engine. Designing the algorithms are the fun part for me, even if I am bad at it.

    I've never looked at the animations in UIs but you're totally right! It's very satisfying and gives us a good feeling. I will definitely look at the UI the next time I will play a game.

    Ah but you didn't mention that Portal 2's main menu background changes depending on how much of the singleplayer campaign you've finished so far.

      Oh, I totally forgot about that. That's nice!

    Number one reason why the time needed for UI is almost always underestimated. Making everything animated in a cohesive yet non-repetitive way is just a lot of work.

  • @JonasTyroller
    @JonasTyroller  6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Yes, I guess I'm talking more about polishing than about actual UI Design. My bad. I only look at shiny things.

    I really treasure your breakdown videos! TH=hey are full of highly useful knowledge and you make easy to learn about these subconscious aspects of design

    video game UI is so good that
    OS & App makers
    polish even their non-game UIs
    in a similar way
    (even if the effect is toned down compared to in some video games, it's still there making everything much better to use).
    if you use your phone or computer, you'll notice video-game-like UI polishing details in apps and even the operating system itself,
    even in unexpected places like the settings.

    I like your room metaphor because it makes UI a memory palace.

  • @JuhoSprite
    @JuhoSprite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think you should do a part two cuz you only really talked about the animations and not the real design of the ui. Maybe what makes a good, clean and clear Ui.

    In books, movies, and music, people tend to prefer a slow descent into chaos and madness followed by a quick resolution. 7 chords resolve to 1. Tension builds in Incredibles 2 for an hour in a half and is fixed in a few minutes.
    I was a bit surprised that this works the opposite way: starting off with disorder and (relatively) slowly putting things 'back.'

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. It's true, we usually like it if the resolution gets delayed, but in the case of UI it's just a matter of practicality. You don't want to wait two minutes just for the UI animation to finish. :D

  • @_ace55

    I didn't really thought about UI Designing, but it is interesting.
    But just the animation is boring, you need some unique sound effects!
    And to find / make these seems harder to me than create a nice animation :D

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hm. Neither of those things seems super easy to me. :D
      Have you ever tried making your own sound effects? Maybe I can make a tutorial about that.

    • @_ace55
      @_ace55 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonas Tyroller yes, i tried it but I failed. It would be nice if you make a tutorial ;D

    • @JonasTyroller

      Okay. I'll probably do that the next time I need sounds for my own games. :D

    You say it happens so quickly while I can't wait for this animations to end. They waste my time. There are useful animetion that guide eyes and help undersand what is going on but nowadays everything animates and makes it harder to focus on information. And getting information fast is the only purpos of UI. If it does it right it doesn't even matter if its ugly or pretty because you don't see it, you don't remember it. You only remember that you didn't have to look for anything.

    But in reality, those animated background changes in blizzard games is just feature bloat, wasting precious gigabytes on the haddrive and ram banks
