I had the Roux-en-Y bypass 8.5 years ago when I was in my late 50’s. It took me 2 full years to go from 440 to my goal weight of 210. Six months after reaching my goal weight I dropped an additional 10 pounds through skin reduction surgery. I have maintained my weight at 200 for the last 6 years. I’m part of the small percentage of bypass patients who have lost 100% of their excess weight and have not gained any weight back. I’m only commenting because of the title of this video. I’m not a medical professional or any kind of medical expert but I am an expert on being overweight having been fat most of my adult life. In my opinion if you think you can eat whatever you want after weight loss surgery then you shouldn’t have the surgery. I could be wrong but I think the vast majority of obese people are just like me. The reason we are fat is due to two things. We eat to relieve stress and we are carbaholics. We are addicted to refined sugar and carb rich highly processed foods. Gastric bypass is an extreme step to take in your life. It should change the way you eat for the rest of your life. It’s worth it when you realize being morbidly obese will almost always cause you to die prematurely. So do whatever you can to get the stress out of your life (I had to change to a less stressful job) and I would suggest you do as I have done and give up any food that has refined sugar FOREVER!!! That means no candy or pop or ice cream or processed foods since they almost always have sugar or high fructose corn syrup as a main ingredient. If you are like me you can’t just eat one cookie or one small sliver of cheesecake. If you eat the first spoonful of Ben & Jerry’s cherry garcia you don’t stop till the pint is empty. You don’t eat just one donut, you buy half a dozen and eat them all. I think you will find it takes much less willpower to give up sweets completely than it does to just eat a small amount with meals. Good luck to any of you who are contemplating gastric bypass.
We would suggest avoiding syrup unless it is a sugar free syrup. Syrup has a lot of sugar and is easy to consume more than the recommended serving size
Awesome for you but I fully disagree , I also have had decades of dieting and exercise and am now in a great place 18 months post rny I'm 56 and excited about where I am , the reason I disagree is I never had to eat lots to be obese nor did I ever have food addictions or eat junk food regularly , I was just fat right from about 3 years old , it's not an input output problem it's a processing problem
Yeah I disagree with you too. All wls is is long term portion control, that’s it. And to the contrary all carbs are not bad just like all fat is not bad. Your body needs carbs, fats, and proteins for a reason. It’s not that you have to forever give everything you like prior to surgery but the surgery is just a tool to help you learn to eat in moderation just like with everything else. A person could eat all the healthy food they want and still gain weight. Too much of anything is not good for you and that’s with anything in life. A lot of times once people lose a lot of weight they don’t even wanna eat as much sweets as they used to but even if you do every now and then it’s okay. Any diet or surgery has better long term success when the individual learns to eat in moderation. Good for you that you totally cut out all sweets, but the sweets themselves did not make you overweight but the fact that you couldn’t control yourself from eating them. You were eating the whole box of cookies instead of telling yourself I’m gonna just eat one and that’s okay that’s what happens to a lot of people. And some people are overweight actually hate sweets so who are you talking about saying ‘we’? Just because that is why you’re overweight doesn’t mean that’s why everyone else is. Some people are overweight due to hormones or medication. Nonetheless, congratulations on your journey and I’m not saying what you’re saying is wrong per se but people also have different experiences and can handle food and sweets differently.
@BOO-sy2oz Go for it , it's life changing , hunger disappears for a few months afterwards then it does come back but you're easily satisfied and your metabolic system is drastically changed ( for the better )
If you remove everything. You'll eventually gain the wieght back. Your craving will be so bad that you'll give into. That's the reason why many patients regain weight.
@victoriahollister6875 This is only the case when people challenge their stomach and didn't tame their minds enough before the surgery. It's 100% mental. We have to go thru so much before to even be able to get it. So its unfortunate to see people gain it all back. I refuse. Thank god i hate sweets. I love a good juicy steak tho. I had bypass and DEFINITELY dont wanna go back.
@caryeugene8107 i wouldn't be scared. It's just a mindset adjustment. Heaviest i was 341 got to 222, plateaued then back on track. Just research and be ready to not be able to eat the food you're used to.
I can't understand why someone would go thru surgery to return to old eating habits that got them obese in the 1st place. I had VSG at age 65 and for me, it was a tool to completely reset my health. I will be on a low carb, no sugar plant-based diet for the rest of my life with a daily calorie intake of 1200.
Sometimes the food or eating disorder is a by product of other life circumstances.. If you get rid of the food .. but not what is causing your dependence on food .. then it is possible to fall into old habits ..
Because you dont fix your head with weightloss surgery only your stomach. Mind still wants the same and for some people mind is stronger then the will to change eating habits. If they could change the eating habits they wouldnt take the surgery in the first place.

During my nursing clinicals 22 years ago the high fat and bacon diet were very popular. And the cardiac ward was full of men in there 30rds. And fourties that were living these diets. Make sure there is not a family history of cornary artery diseases. To this day it is very hard for to allow my self to eat a lot of bacon and high fats. What I would suggest is do the pre op or liquid phase of your diet again to help get yourself back on track. Stay on it for two weeks and then try readjusting your eating habits back to what you need to resume/regain progress.
I'm in process of getting bypass. I'm 27. And I'm starting to have my doubts. I don't know if I can live everyday the rest of my life chewing each bite 15 times, eating every so often, and constantly taking vitamins and supplements. I am not big into sugars, I have 3 kids living and 2 angel babies.. and i have dealt with a lot of trauma which all put me over 300 lbs. But I've lost almost 30lbs on my own. Everything you said is the opposite of the nutrition class I had. They said no beef, no pork, no fried foods, no sugar, no sugary drinks, even with 1mg of total carbohydrates. That we can't drink except 30 mins before our meal and wait 30 mins after. Chew every bite 15 times, and that we should eat within 30 mins with no drink. That we have to exercise atleast 15-30mins a day, we have to drink so much water a day. It's just a lot and I have enough that stresses me out with my kids health problems, and my husband being gone weeks at a time for work. Then I think of how will we vacation as a family? Go to family outings, go to the carnival, etc. I just hate thinking the rest of my like with be bound by this decision I make. I have a hard time exercising because of my back and knees but I am trying to find water exercising stuff around me. On top of us purchasing other work out equipment. Ugh!!! I just... Idk what to do 😭
Maybe consider the other options. I believe Bypass has the most side effects. Like I got the sleeve and although I made a lifestyle change, the bypass seems like so much more
I had a vertical sleeve just 6 days ago. I sort of knew what to expect because I have 2 family members who had the gastric bypass procedure. Although there are distinct differences between the two, all bariatric procedures are designed to help you keep the weight off. But you have to follow the rules and if you don't, you will regain--not because the procedure didn't work but rather you failed to follow the rules. Before surgery, I was put on a strict liquid high protein diet where I drank the protein shakes, water, unsweetened tea, and Crystal Light. My doctor told me that losing around 30-35 pounds will help my liver become more supple and more easily handled during surgery, as it must be lifted to get to the stomach. Now post-op, I have about 2 more weeks of liquid before I can have something as simple as a soft scrambled egg. The rules are very restrictive to help you heal post-op, but just know that they are temporary. If you intend to keep your weight off once you lose it, you need to decide if you can follow these temporary rules. It's great you lost 30 pounds, however, do you have a plan to get to your goal weight if you don't have the surgery? Bariatric procedures are tools that help morbidly obese people lose and keep off weight because they've been unable to lose through diet and exercise. Really think candidly about your history of obesity and what your best options are. Try to see yourself post-op, losing the weight and continuing to lose because you're not as heavy, and you have the energy and ability to exercise. Think about what you want out of life and if having the procedure will help you get there. If your answer is yes, then enlist the support of your family and friends to help you through the difficult aspects of it. Surgery may not be for you, and there are mental health professionals you can speak with about your history with food and your present challenges. This is why a psychological evaluation is required for all bariatric surgery candidates because the procedures require changes to your manner of thinking and force you to confront risky behaviors. If you have the surgery and think you're going to be able to emotionally eat or put no thought into what or how much you eat, think again. I wish you the best. Be well.
Thank you both for your responses. I have jumped past the fear I initially had. I had alot going on in my life and the nutrition class I went to completely overwhelmed me. I spoke to my doctor since and he helped me alot. I have lost more weight, I'm doing way better and he was shocked to see my progress going so fast. I get surgery June 30th. So all the prayers would be greatly appreciated !
@@TheirMommy589 you're going to do amazing! In the beginning, it's overwhelming but trust me, it's so worth it. You'll get used to the changes and ultimately, you'll start to make better decisions and everything
how many calories should i be eating? i am 3 1/2 months from RNY and im at a stall. I was told to eat more. I am eating about 90 plus protein and 80 ounces of water but eating under 800 calories but im not working out
My mom's had this surgery for over 4 months and she can't have any protein without vomiting - not even eggs, minced chicken or fish even 🥲. She eats slowly but this still happens. The doctors checked and everything seems to be okay. It's just that she developed an ulcer post surgery
Kim I'm not creator of this or anything but no, you shouldn't drink while you eat because it can a) be painful, b) takes up space that isn't food related, c) can cause food to slide through impacting absorption of nutrients.
that's what I eat everything you named off turkey burgers and steaks pork chops veggies I need to stop eating chips I'm obsessed with the low sugar chips
ok what lol carbs aren't bad for u i used them to make me stronger at the gym just like monster i would eat protein bars in morning and dinner and lunch i would have small bag of takis or jalapeño bread or cheese danish from 7/11 or kids meal from mcdonalds mostly stuff below a 1000 calories sometimes a quasadilla from bakers i lost so much weight, i got bariatric sleeve to help myself for older age i know when i get older i may not be able to do these stuff anyways, question u think i can ever have takis or monster again like half a small bag of takis or anything spicy like tajin burrito?
I never had dumping syndrome nor no bad symptoms of any sort which make me wonder if my sleeve was successful or do i need a revision.I eat protein and drink lots of water but still be extremely hungry to say i had gastroperesis and food and liquid dont empty like it suppose to.
That is true to some degree but most bariatric patients also suffer from a metabolic disorder that prevents them from losing a significant amount of weight. Here a great blog that details why bariatric surgery helps patients lose weight: bcofa.com/why-it-is-difficult-to-lose-weight/
That's all great except that I am a vegetarian. & have been for 45 years.. a lactarian to be exact, I do eat cheese, no meat or seafood, I don't eat eggs by themselves or milk either, only soy, almond cashew milk... so getting my protein in has not been easy to say the least, and I think we can all agree, the protein shakes aren't easy to to drink day after day.. especially when they weren't good on day 1...
What are your thoughts on Skyr (Icelandic Yogurt, though the consistency and taste is IMO much closer to Sour Cream)? Massive protein, about 11% of the weight is protein. Also Parmesan, Swiss and Edam cheeses are fairly high in protein (though also fat, generally in about equal amounts).
Well now I guess I'll eat protein. Im 3 weeks out and still eating carbs for soft foods. I was told I could eat beans, soft pastas, mashed potatoes etc. I've been eating them but feel like my sleeve isnt working because I'm not full. Guess it'll kick in when I eat chicken.
This might be a dumb question but, in the subject of protein. Is it not beneficial to attempt to “plug that pouch” with a protein shake? I mean am I thinking about this wrong when it comes to protein shakes? Or will it simply just go straight through? Same question for soups? Are those another thing I should stay away from after lap-band? I’m not looking for medical advice just general information for that specific situation. Thanks 🙏🏻
If someone is struggling to choose healthy foods before the surgery, how is getting the surgery going to help them? Shouldn't the small portion sizing be enough to make someone lose weight, no matter what they eat?
Yes, those can be substitutes for meat options just be sure of the carb content. Sometimes veggie "burger" will be made with quinoa and other grains. Also, beware of the "meatless" meat options as they tend to be overly processed. We recommend eating a whole-foods plant based diet if you are trying to avoid meat.
Your diet will not affect your recovery after surgery. However, if you are a weight loss surgery patient we do not recommend you eat sweets (or at least eat them in moderation)
What about carolina reaper or ghost peppers after the surgery i havent had the gutts to eat Anny spicy food again. but its been 6 months since my surgery now is it safe to eat that Kind of food again ? I used to love spicy food but i dont know when i can start to eat that kind of food again if i ever can ?
So glad I don't like sweets. I literally do not like them. I hate cake especially. Lol I just had Gastric Bypass and it takes me like an hour and a hald to finish an 11oz, 1g sugar protein shake. Its crazy. Its even harder to finish a 16oz water bottle but i have to get 64oz of liquid in my body a day. 1 week down, the rest of my life to go. 😮💨
@@MarA-te5jc I actually had Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich meal.. small portion weighed out to about 3.5 oz then gave the rest to my friend. Deffff worth it!!
I am 3 weeks post op, and my dietician has not mentiones anything about eating low fat cheese, i am following my diet to the T but would love to add some cheese to my food, how soon can you/did you have cheese in your diets? Same thing goes for lettuce and salads
This sounds like it kinda defeats the purpose of getting a surgery for weight loss if you still have to watch how much you eat, sounds kinda stupid to get a surgery if you still have to eat less, like doesn't that already happened when you eat less without a surgery? Don't you already lose weight when you eat that small like measurements of tablespoons? I have to eat more than just two fuckin tablespoons
The cool thing about the surgery is that it shrinks your stomach capacity. So when we talk about smaller portions, although it seems like not a lot at all you will be shocked when you eat a small meal and feel extremely full. One of the biggest challenges our patients have faced prior to having surgery is maintaining their weight loss. They will say they have tried diets and failed at them to only regain more than they originally weighed. Most often, bariatric patients have a metabolic disorder that makes it harder to lose weigh. So not only is surgery forcing you to eat less (due to a smaller stomach size) there is also a change in your anatomy and hormones that affects your hunger
The important of taking your vitamins no matter how far you are out from surgery. Making sure you are taking the adequate amount for what surgery you had. If you are taking another vitamin... making sure it’s doing what it need to do to replace what the body is missing.
After weight loss surgery, your stomach will be smaller and therefore you will feel full faster. So in fact you won't want to / be able to feast on a ton of food
You can...but in super small portions spaced out over time. Example: 1 oz turkey with gravy at 9 am, 2 tbl of mashed potatoes with bacon bits at 12 pm, 1 oz of green bean casserole at 3 pm, small slice of ham at 6 pm, and 1 tbl spoon of stuffing at 9 pm. It's all about spacing and portion control and listening to your body. It lets you know when its full. :)
What % of bariatric patients do you think have undiagnosed Cushing’s Syndrome or Cushing’s Disease? I bet it’s way higher than the % of the general population.
I order one. Yes, just one, and pick at the meat. I don't have room for the corn tortilla. Just chew slowly and a lot before swallowing. ☺ Great source of protein!

@@jenna4628 thank you so much! I'm excited but also very nervous !
I just had gastric bypass but I've noticed I haven't been able to have dumping syndrome.
how many calories should i be eating? i am 3 1/2 months from RNY and im at a stall. I was told to eat more. I am eating about 90 plus protein and 80 ounces of water but eating under 800 calories but im not working out
Great advice. Good content. Thanks for sharing. Thumbs up 😊👍🏾
My mom's had this surgery for over 4 months and she can't have any protein without vomiting - not even eggs, minced chicken or fish even 🥲. She eats slowly but this still happens. The doctors checked and everything seems to be okay. It's just that she developed an ulcer post surgery
What about ramen or pho? I know noodles are gummy and may stick soon after bariatric surgery, but what about later when you’re past 12 weeks? 🤔
That is not a problem in terms of eating, although we do not recommend these foods because they are high in carbs
What are you thoughts on drinking water while you eat?? Is that life time of having to wait to drink while you eat or just temporary?
Kim I'm not creator of this or anything but no, you shouldn't drink while you eat because it can a) be painful, b) takes up space that isn't food related, c) can cause food to slide through impacting absorption of nutrients.
I made the mistake of doing that once and it was painful. Like a bad case of heartburn.
I just want to be clear.... did you just say 2 TABLESPOONS of mashed potatoes!
😂😂😂😂😂
Yes she did
And that's about right I cannot eat more than a half a cup of food at a meal and I don't always finish that
Lol
Yes, i can only eat two tablespoons of it.. if i eat extra it would come right up my through.. there’s no enough space in my stomach
I like you ur real and honest thank u surgery 2/22/22 can't wait
Hope it went well!
Best explained i got. I was crying my gp did not work. Now i know why. I did not get before or after care yeez what a ete opener
What about veggies? What if you get so full off of protein in your meal that you can’t eat your vegetables?
Eat less protein ......😁
that's what I eat everything you named off turkey burgers and steaks pork chops veggies I need to stop eating chips I'm obsessed with the low sugar chips
Thanks Morgan
Thanks for watching!
Yes!!!! So glad I found this video!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanx for keeping it real
ok what lol carbs aren't bad for u i used them to make me stronger at the gym just like monster i would eat protein bars in morning and dinner and lunch i would have small bag of takis or jalapeño bread or cheese danish from 7/11 or kids meal from mcdonalds mostly stuff below a 1000 calories sometimes a quasadilla from bakers i lost so much weight, i got bariatric sleeve to help myself for older age i know when i get older i may not be able to do these stuff anyways, question u think i can ever have takis or monster again like half a small bag of takis or anything spicy like tajin burrito?
What she is saying to eat for protein is completely opposite of what my program says. Steak bacon sausage can be hard until your pretty far out.
I never had dumping syndrome nor no bad symptoms of any sort which make me wonder if my sleeve was successful or do i need a revision.I eat protein and drink lots of water but still be extremely hungry to say i had gastroperesis and food and liquid dont empty like it suppose to.
What if you’re a sweets person? When can you eat sweets after surgery and how?
Please i m post sleeve since 1 year i have abdominal pain left side after eating fries or carbohydrate why what the plan
I had the sleeve one year ago I can't do fast food fries cause of the grease they are fried in. I can do air fried or oven baked only. Hope that helps
So far, it sounds to me like, if you just do the bariatric surgery diet you will lose the weight, even without the surgery.
That is true to some degree but most bariatric patients also suffer from a metabolic disorder that prevents them from losing a significant amount of weight. Here a great blog that details why bariatric surgery helps patients lose weight: bcofa.com/why-it-is-difficult-to-lose-weight/
@@LiveHealthyMD thank you because eating well does NOT always equate to weight loss. Especially if you have alot to lose.
Of coarse. But who can eat like that who has an eating disorder without the surgery
@@ColinUnger I don't have an eating disorder. I just have diabetes.
@@josesolismusic if obesity is not the cause of your diabetes i wouldn't expect that this procedure would cure your diabetes.
Really nervous about dumping syndrome
Just be sure you are avoiding high sugar and high-fat foods and you should be good!
It’s not about the portion but rather the variety of foods.
Is veggie burgers or veggie sausage or veggie chicken staples for protein on this diet?
Yes, those can be substitutes for meat options just be sure of the carb content. Sometimes veggie "burger" will be made with quinoa and other grains. Also, beware of the "meatless" meat options as they tend to be overly processed. We recommend eating a whole-foods plant based diet if you are trying to avoid meat.
So pretty much follow a really good keto diet after surgery?
We instruct patients to eat low carb and the keto can be a good option after WLS but we do not specifically teach keto to patients
How about fresh and all natural fruit juices
Thanks
When i can eat sweet after inguinial hernia open sergery?
Your diet will not affect your recovery after surgery. However, if you are a weight loss surgery patient we do not recommend you eat sweets (or at least eat them in moderation)
@@LiveHealthyMD Thanks for replying,i am now in 4th week
What about carolina reaper or ghost peppers after the surgery i havent had the gutts to eat Anny spicy food again. but its been 6 months since my surgery now is it safe to eat that Kind of food again ? I used to love spicy food but i dont know when i can start to eat that kind of food again if i ever can ?
Spicy foods are fine to eat after weight loss surgery as long as you are not prone to acid reflux, heartburn, or an ulcer

@@LiveHealthyMD surly its a mental issue? Having surgery is a tool but the real challenge is the urge to overcome the desire for food

The important of taking your vitamins no matter how far you are out from surgery. Making sure you are taking the adequate amount for what surgery you had. If you are taking another vitamin... making sure it’s doing what it need to do to replace what the body is missing.
@@sonjiabush9797 Hey Hon, I just wanted to make sure you saw this video Morgan did on vitamins. It's great! th-cam.com/video/bBxFjS-S7AA/w-d-xo.html
I had an oz of meat rice and beans 🫘
Size of an egg?! Then you can’t enjuy the feast with family on Christmas forever. What an stupid idea
It depends. If you want a pint of Ben and Jerry's - you prolly shouldn't get surgery. 😀
What % of bariatric patients do you think have undiagnosed Cushing’s Syndrome or Cushing’s Disease? I bet it’s way higher than the % of the general population.
Why do you say this?
just wanna know i can eat a really good carne asada taco again 😭
Same 😂😂
I order one. Yes, just one, and pick at the meat. I don't have room for the corn tortilla. Just chew slowly and a lot before swallowing. ☺ Great source of protein!
Can you have a hamburger or pizza again?
Yes you can...
I am vegan this is killing me still on liquids
I want to eat normally god
It’s obvious you don’t like lamb 😂
