"I actually love the look of that" Thor embuing the children with his power as the lightning forms the world tree Yggdrassil is such a beautiful moment. Yggdrassil is a powerful motif in Norse mythology, and to finally see it worked into a Thor movie was my favorite part of L&T.
I find that someone's opinion of this movie is directly correlated to how funny they found the goats. They got me laughing every time and I loved the movie. The tone of the movie swinging wildly between grim and goofy wasn't a problem for me, probably because that mirrors my coping mechanisms, but also because I tend to appreciate that kind of contrast in stories. I do agree that the execution of this movie wasn't perfect, and certainly not as good as Ragnarok. I notice that you tend not to appreciate movies that lean heavily on goofiness (e.g., Guardians of the Galaxy), but I like that you don't mistake humor for insincerity. Thanks for sharing your critical eye with us.
I think you're onto something here. I loved the goats and this is my second-favourite Thor movie (behind Ragnarok). I also have no problem with sudden shifts in tone and tempo ('tis why System Of A Down is one of my favourite bands), and the contrast between stark dark misery and goofy giddy silliness was highly entertaining. Also, I get the feeling that our lovely Hostess is not a big Guns N' Roses fan, which was another selling point for me.
Let me know your thoughts below! I Am Groot is up next! Yes I watched it all. It will be a quick video so I'll likely get that out within the week. ➡ kaiielle.com/links ✌
One thing I do love about this movie is hidden deep down it was a true family film. Chris Hemsworth's wife played the wolf woman in the beginning. One of their sons played kid Thor running through the forest. And their daughter played Love. The good portion of the Asgardian kids were all played by Chris', Portman's, Bale's, and Taika's kids. A true family affair.
The most frustrating part about this movie is that the concept is actually really interesting, but they decided to go all in on the comic relief that made ragnoroc different than Thor and forgot that to make a good movie it needs to be grounded and not just screaming goats and a disassembled head following them on there journey.
Korg is telling the whole story to a group of children. It's silly because it's interpreted through the lens of children, it's scary and funny in the ways it would be scary and funny to children. That doesn't make it a great movie, and I also wish it were less silly, but it can help reframe the experience for those who think it was just completely off the rails.
I loved the black and white battle scene and it's one of my favorite battle scenes from the MCU, so I was a bit surprised that you didn't really like it, as it is widely praised! Great reaction anyways, looking forward to more of the MCU reactions!
Many people find this movie too "quirky" or "cheesy"... Although it really wasn't my favourite, I think it helps when you watch it as a story (Korg's) told to children around a campfire. Then the "exaggerated" parts become ok, I guess... I find it "cute" now, after seeing a few times looking at it this way.
I LOVE special effects and sound effects so much. When I figured out the tennis ball (from the tennis scene in Witches of Eastwick) was a special effect, you could've peeled me off the ceiling. This enjoyment continues even to this day - THAT DELICIOUS HAMMER REASSEMBLY NOISE! (happy sign) I'm in love.
Since everyone else here is already saying what I think about the movie and your reaction to it, I’ll use this comment to say that I always appreciate the fun little edits that you make lol. The black and white over your face cam was simple, but a fun touch.
I LOVE LOVE AND THUNDER!!! I agree that it's for kids, and I like to imagine that some of those parents had their first date watching Thor. People in the comments are always like "it's goofy because of Korg", but I think this is really a case of Chris Hemsworth getting more and more power over time, so the movies slowly changed to be what he likes. This movie is his (and my) taste. The goats and GNR make me SO HAPPY LOL! It's like Deadpool being what Ryan Reynolds wants. It's not for everybody, but that's okay!
The humor was the *point* of this film. It is a comedy with a veneer of heroes and tragedy. I mean, c'mon, kids fighting monsters with stuffed animals? Russell Crowe with an Italian accent and short skirt? The framing of the film was Korg (Taiko Waititi, also the director) telling a children's story, perhaps sometime after the film's events, to visitors of New Asgard, while he regrew the rest of his body. In that sense, it isn't what actually happened, just Korg's version second hand, because he wasn't there for parts of it.
I really liked it actually. I'm a big GNR fan so I like the music, BUT I can't recall another movie that used only one band for every non scored scene in the movie. So I 100% understand those who hate the music choices. All in all, it's a movie that I can enjoy for years to come. When I watch it it's even better because I know how much hate it gets, but I genuinely enjoy it regardless. Two things I would absolutely change though is more Bale and less goats.
I'm pretty sure Highlander was just a series of thematically-linked Queen music videos joined together with a really interesting plot, fairly decent acting, and swordplay apparently choreographed by an 8-year-old.
@@StarkRG 100% right about Queen in that movie, and the soundtrack is one of the things that makes it an enduring Classic. The only reason I'd want to see a Highlander remake is so that they can "Star Wars Prequel" the sword-fights, but they'd just screw up the story somehow anyway.
In an interview with GQ, Chris Hemsworth said about this movie, "I cringe and laugh equally at it. I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly. It’s always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective." This has sort of informed my views on Love and Thunder. I don't hate the film -- I was so happy they brought Natalie Portman back and actually gave her something to do -- but the tonal inconsistencies make it hard to love, and some aspects are very cringeworthy (*cough cough Zeus cough*). The special effects don't really bother me, especially in light of what's still coming up. I won't spoil anything, but there is a particular special effect in a movie you haven't gotten to yet that will make you think, "Yeah, Love and Thunder actually looked pretty damned good, comparatively." In the end, I think it's the lack of focus that does Love and Thunder in, but I find that if I just shut my brain off and let it be its own thing, I actually have quite a bit of fun with it. Cheers!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Thor: Love and Thunder. The influence of the '80s in this film was truly remarkable. It brought to mind classic films such as Conan the Barbarian (1982), Flash Gordon (1980), The Beastmaster (1982), Krull (1983), The NeverEnding Story (1984), Heavy Metal (1981), Red Sonja (1985), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Legend (1985), Masters of the Universe (1987), The Princess Bride (1987), and Willow (1988). The reference to Jean-Claude Van Damme's iconic mid-air split was delightful. I really enjoyed the use of Guns N' Roses in this movie. I've been a fan of Thor since 1987. In the end, I found Gor to be an excellent villain.
I saw this in the theater, and while I wouldn't say it's one of my favourite MCU movies, it was definitely worth seeing it on the big screen. The scene where the kids got to fight is one of the best things I've ever seen. Also, I wasn't expecting to see Jane again, so I was really glad to get this story line, it's good to have closure. All in all, definitely worthy of the "not a favourite" label, but a very worthwhile and fun entry in the lore.
I feel EVERYONE was expecting this to be another Thor: Ragnarok and went into it with Waaay to high expectations 🤷 Yes there are parts that are either Cringe or Over the Top lol BUT with the same as Eternals, it is definitely NOT the worst MCU movie 😂😂 Once i got the direction we were going, it was a fun ride ❤ Idk why everyone expects Master Class Filming For EVERY MOVIE THEY SEE 😂😂 Christian Bale was the MVP of this movie and 1 of my ONLY GRIPES is that we didn't get more of him 🤷 but as far Thor movies, this is up there ABOVE THE FIRST ❤🤷🤙
This was a messy one. In the end, Taika leaned a little too much into comedy. I was apprehensive about Jane as Thor, but that was handled well. And Bale was fantastic. But stuff like the recurring gag of the screaming goats was a bit much...
It definitely helps to think of it as the story being filtered through Korg's retelling. It's not that he lied about anything, just emphasized the silly and downplayed the serious. It's still not a great movie, but it's not as awful as some people make it out to be (things rarely are).
the goats are the ONE thing that keep me from watching this movie over and over. i love comedies snd i especially love rom-coms and i ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY love Jane-Thor romance. but those damn goats….
Great reaction like always! You summed up pretty much everything as to why this movie recieved the harsh reception it got. My only problem was the harsh transition from silly comedy to dark drama! I suspect there is a pretty good movie sitting on the editing floor, somewhere, where they didn’t make the movie quite so silly. Fun fact the little girl is actualy chris hemsworth daugther and the wolf lady that Thor makes love in the beginning is Elsa Pataky chris hemsworth wife. Also one of the sons of Chris Hemsworth, appears in the movie for a few seconds. We can see him running in a scene where the hero is a child. Thor receives as a gift a pair of goats that scream outrageously. These goats are familiar to those who read the comics or know anything about Norse mythology, as they are the ones that pull Thor’s chariot. In the movie, despite their irritating howls, they are a fun detail. Keep up the good work.
This is the only MCU movie I only saw once. I bought tickets for two different showings opening weekend, like I always do for Marvel movies, but as I was sitting through the credits waiting for the post-credits scenes, I went onto my movie app to return my ticket for the next day. I can't even bring myself to watch reactions to it. I've tried, but I can never get more than a few minutes in. But since I'm not going to be watching the reaction, I at least wanted to leave a comment to help out the channel! I don't know how you ended up feeling about it... but I hope you enjoyed it, like some people did!
Hey Kaielle. Your closing thoughts were spot on with my opinion of this movie. First, this is the first MCU movie that I did not like. I was not happy when I left the theater. Why?… Secondly, this was way too damn goofy. (Enough of Korg). Most people love Thor: Ragnarok, and I understand that. In a vacuum Ragnarok is very enjoyable and entertaining, but I’ve never been on board with the hero who is a warrior, a king and a god also being a dumb boob. He is supposed to be as serious as T’Challa was. Third, Christian Bale worked his ass off for them to make a completely different movie from the one he thought he was making. I have a half dozen other gripes too. This movie was a major blow to the morale of MCU fans.
There are things I like about this movie. I loved Jane and her storyline. I liked the kids getting to battle. But after they definitely gave Taika too much power and they needed to reel him in a bit more.
It's hard to blame you for having mixed feelings about this movie. It may not be for everyone, quite simply. I really enjoyed the film myself, especially the touching and tender moments between Thor and Jane. But I also see quite a few places that could have benefitted from better writing, and maybe a few more connections to other MCU stories. The concept of Jane acquiring Thor's powers from Mjolnir, while it seems to come from out of nowhere, is based very strongly on a comics run. As in the movie, she has late stage cancer and using the hammer allows her to fight off the effects of the disease temporarily. However, Mjolnir is unable to cure the cancer; while its power can fight off disease agents from outside the wielder's body, it's not "programmed" to kill the body's own rogue cells. Furthermore, every time Jane uses it, the hammer's magic purges all poison from her body -- including chemotherapy. Eventually, she succumbs to the cancer after a pitched battle and dies. As you said, Gorr's character feels a bit out of place in such a goofy-seeming story. One interpretation that I like is that the whole narrative is being told by Korg and from his viewpoint. As such, he puts his own unique spin on Thor and the events surrounding him, but the terror of Gorr remains much the same, since Korg found the God Butcher so frightening. As for Thor's characterization, the guys on the Heroes Reforged channel offer a positive assessment of that in their review of the movie from a few years ago. I recommend it, if you're interested.
definitely agree. I feel like this is two movies, one with christian bale acting his ass off and another with screaming goats (which I liked for maybe 3 screams before I was done)
I always thought the biggest problem with this movie is Guns & Roses, but YMMV. No doubt they paid for the special effects first then got to the music & thought well crap we made this one contract for music & now we are out of money for more, I guess we'll just use everything we can from that one contract. (Believe me I like Guns 'n' Roses, but this was overkill, some change up would have been great.) I'm also joking about that being the biggest problem, but it is something that stands out & easy to pick on.
Somebody else on another reaction mentioned that the entire movie didn't portray events as they actually happened, instead it showed things as Korg narrated by Korg, so viewed in that way the movie makes more sense tonally. It still leans far too much into the comedy though, and most of that comedy is just distracting rather than funny.
Just wanted to point out pretty sure you missed one of the funniest jokes in the whole movie, go back to the scene where the group enters the Arena with all the gods, and are walking around to find their seats, and take a closer look at the few seconds where we get a look at the god of Korgs species. You'll realise what you're looking for when you see it lmao, its so good.
I have a headcanon that while the power of Thor is only granted for a limited time only, the enchantment itself lingers on the improvised weapons. In years to come, the little girl will grow into a young woman, who donates her stuffed rabbit to a charity shop or children's home, hoping it will give other kids the comfort it gave her in her ordeal. And the rabbit will find its way into the hands of other endangered children, who want to get home, or want their home to be safe, and grant those children the power of Thor.
Actually, I would probably rate The Marvels below this one, personally. I will agree that I don't really hate it... but it is a massive miss for me. The Marvels, though... actually bothered me.
@@Drake844221 The Marvels was phase 5, it had to be because Ms Marvel was one of the last things released in that phase. Personally, I think The Eternals was worse. Like this movie, it was a good concept but tried to fit way too much into a film format. Love and Thunder is definitely still very near the bottom.
Completely burnt out on these movies, but this one in its goofiness was still entertaining. One of two phase 4 movies that didn't bore me to death. Doesn't mean it's any kind of masterpiece, but it did its job.
It's been mentioned that realizing from early on this was Korg narrating (forgetting Jane's name multiple times) it becomes easier to accept the silliness. The total disconnect in timber with the Gorr scenes then also makes sense in that in those parts Korg was absent, and we're getting the actual events, rather than Korg's perspective. But, I agree that it would have been nicer if the whole movie was in the more serious tone. The threat of Gorr getting to Eternity was universe-breaking, but we didn't get to stay immersed in that, which would have made the end hit harder. I know Chris Hemsworth wants to show his comedic talents more, but the Gorr story wasn't a good place to feature them. In some ways it feels like Waititi was trying to channel some of James Gunn's Guardians energy (especially when they were in the opening act), but he doesn't have the finesse about when to let some humor in and when to stay serious. Otherwise, looking past the Korg filter, the story was solid, and leaves open future appearances not only of Thor, but Love as the new God of Thunder with the Young Avengers being set up. p.s. if not mentioned elsewhere yet, the goats are part of the Thor mythology, even if not so noisy. Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr pull Thor's chariot (rather than boat), and he can dine on them, only to resurrect them with his hammer.
The movie definitely isn't one of the best, but not as bad as some say imo. It definitely has it's moments, and the main drawback I have is definitely the constant, almost jarring, tone shifts throughout. I get that it was what Taika Waititi was going for, but if he had gone with a more Ragnarok level silliness, then it would've been better. The main reason I and many others believe it was that way, is because it was being Narrated by Korg, except the parts with Gorr. Also, Jane becoming Mighty Thor isn't too dissimilar to the comics, Instead of Thor putting a new enchantment on it, it was Odin's old one and each time she powered up, it would purge the Chemo from her and making the cancer more aggressive.
HAHAHA OMG the opening batman theme when she realizes was solid. I also loved Bale's performance I just think this movie would have been a better scary movie and not a comedy oriented MCU film but the kids factor is the truth they sadly wont give us a dark scary film. Similar to Multiverse of Madness I think the scary parts from Gorr would have fit a better overall theme.
The MCU likes playing with genres post Endgame. I’d say the best way to watch this, would be Friday/Saturday night at midnight. This is their “Adult Swim” film. If you watch it through those lenses, you can say, “Yeah, it’s a fun film.” Not my favorite Thor film. Becomes more understandable once you see it as Korg “narrating” what we’re watching. Can’t wait for your rewatch of the MCU & your analysis. People tend to forget that Phases 1 - 3 had their major flaws too that Fans took note of.
The problem I have with that is that they adapted the wrong source material if they wanted to with "fun film". The tone didn't fit the story. Jane's, Thor's and even Gorr stories have some tragedy to them, but you barely feel that in the film. Everything is too over the top silly and goofy, as Taika intended. I think it could have been a perfectly fine fun comic book movie if they just choose a different Thor storyline.
I think a lot of the love part is more than just Thor and Jane. It’s love of father and daughter. It’s Thor and Jane. Thor and his adopted daughter (which is his real life daughter).
I like that Jane is worthy of getting into Valhalla. The fact that she gets there while not being on the battlefield means (at least for me) that the fight against cancer is considered a worthy battle for itself.
Bale is a Sith cosplaying as a Jedi in this movie the look of him anyways. There is a behind the scenes on Disney plus of this movie and many others that give some cool BTS stuff you might enjoy
For me this movie was a big miss as it seems potentially the studio saw how people loved the humour in Ragnarok and pushed Taika to overdo it in this. I would 100% pay to see the Thor movie Christian Bale thought he was making though.
So Jane becoming Thor was because Thor told his hammer to always protect her, no matter what. When she's in grave danger, because of her cancer, Milnojr responds the only way it can protect her, by giving her god like strength. We even see the hammer glow after Thor tells it to protect her. There's not a ton of build up, but it makes sense.
Certainly not my favorite MCU movie, but I enjoy it. The over-the-top ridiculous humor balances out the tragic sadness of Gorr losing his daughter, Jane dying of cancer, Thor grieving his love with Jane, and Val pretending she's doing just fine after her loss all those years ago. It could have been a depressing movie, so instead they violently jerk you into a distraction. The whole story being told in an absurd manner is a reflection of Korg as an unreliable narrator. Plus the effort they put in just to include a throw-away Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson joke at the end is so unhinged that you almost have to respect it.
But it's an extremely Australian~NZ sort of flick, placing tragedy and comedy hard up against each other is extremely common in antipodean movies so this one felt very much at home for me.
Yeah.. for as good as Ragnarok was, this film was disappointing. I liked moments, but as a whole it was uneven. How do you make a smiling happy movie about cancer and someone who kills gods? It felt like two movies fighting each other.
While not a great movie necessairly.. As someone who has had too many family members get cancer.. And die as well, seeing Jane's fight and ultimate sacrafice always makes me cry.. The final scene between Thor, Jane and Gor is.. Heartbreaking. Also Chris Hemsworths daughter plays his daughter in the movie
They barely touched on it. And the movie was so lame it was hard to take serious. Even as my dad passed of colon cancer in Nov of 2020. This movie did nothing to connect at me. Oh... and the Gorr the god butcher storyline in the comics is my fav all time comic run. What they chose to do in this movie ruined it for me.
I was so disappointed with this movie coming out of the theater, to be honest. There was so much potential that was just straight wasted; Bale as Gorr shouldn't have been a one-and-done, the use of Mighty Thor, King Valkyrie, Immortal City...there was so much that could've and should've been used so much better! Add to that the fact that the whole movie just felt disjointed. Such a shame! I really enjoyed Ragnarok but I think Taika completely jumped the shark this time. I felt the same with Raimi and Multiverse of Madness; it just felt (to me, at least) like the directors were making the movies for themselves instead of the audience. Anyway..... You still managed to make it an enjoyable reaction, so fair play to you for that. Catch you for the next one EDIT: Oh, and those fucking goats........
It is my understanding that originally Moon Knight and this movie were supposed to be taking place about the same time and released close together. There was even going to be a potential mention about the God butcher being the reason why there were only seven gods in the Iniad poster instead of 9. The pandemic threw a whole bunch of planes out the window, and things had to get reshuffled and Rewritten, but that connection was supposed to be a thing is my understanding
i love that you said Gorr should have been in Moon Knight. he actually was technically there in the background. while that show was happening, Gorr was killing the gods. there was originally meant to be a line in the moon knight script about how someone has been killing the gods, but they removed it because they wanted to try to make moon knight as unconnected as possible. unfortunately, in doing so, they kinda ruined Gorr a little
The Gorr story in the thor comic run is my fav comic run of all time. This movie was an absolute disgrace to what a great story it could have been in movie format.
I really enjoyed the Thor comics that this movie is based on, and I had concerns going into it. Taika Waititi can do great goofball comedy, but while these stories had moments of levity, they were pretty dark. Gorr was a scary mofo villain, and Jane's story was a serious examination of what does it actually mean to be "worthy" (plus, you know, effing Stage 4 cancer). And we got a fairly disjointed movie, I thought, with the goofball and the darkness not meshing together well. I didn't hate it, but I was disappointed.
Gorr is my favorite villein from the comics and he was the worst and best part of this movie for me. i wish he got more then 1 movie and i wish he looked more like the comics but Bale was so fun to watch
This movie is all over the place, but I still love it, even with the damned goats. They should have been used for some nice Indian or middle eastern foods after the second round of screams. I freaking love the fighting scene with kids though. And that last scene with Christian and Chris and Natalie was beautiful! I wanted a bit more of that.
I think the studio interfered too much and they were too rushed and cut too much to slim down the run time. I feel like the movie had so much potential and it fell off. This is still not a bad movie for me and I really enjoyed the film overall but I can just think of a better version of the film that would have worked. One thing though Stormbreaker does not have an enchantment on it restricting its wielders to be worthy. Anyone can wield Stormbreaker. Only Mjölnir has that requirement, the only exception is Jane who is arguably not worthy and is only able to wield Mjölnir because of the enchantment Thor placed on it to always protect Jane. My criticisms about the film are summed up 1. Lady Sif was wasted. 2. Gorr should have been used way more and the overall tone should have been darker and heavier. 3. They should have killed Korg in that scene with Zeus 4. Valkyrie should not have been wishy-washy with wanting to die and then not joining Thor in the final battle because she would die? Very confusing character motivations 5. Tone down the Guns 'n' Roses Overall I like the concept but have some problems with the execution of the film. I enjoy Thor alot as a character and between him and Gorr the film was enjoyable for me.
Interesting take. Personally, i'd go the other way. For me, this is a rare case of the studio not interfering enough. Taika Waititi is fantastic when he's got someone to reign him in a little. I feel this movie is what happens when he's left too much to his own devices. It just seems very self-indulgent
@@BeardiusMaximus 100% can see that. My take was more on the knowledge of how much was reportedly cut from the film and seeing some of the deleted scenes like Zeus giving them Thunderbolt. I feel like a lot of context and depth would have been in the full story that the studio was being too harsh on the runtime. Ultimately even if we did get the full intended experience it may well have still felt very self-indulgent. I was more just thinking of the possibilities and giving the benefit of the doubt. I understand I am in the minority here lol yours is a very valid and unfortunately likely take.
Taika did one too many Marvel movies, and this was the one. I couldn't agree more about the conflicting tones of the movie and how they wasted a really good Christian Bale performance in THIS movie. I felt like it was the MCU's first real miss.
i feel you're right, It was too much. Too much ooo, look at this funny moment, too much guns n roses, too much of the same formula cranked up times 2 at least. Christian bale carried more than the rest but i can't fault the actors, I think the writers just don't know how else to portray a heroes without comedy every 10 minutes and not let the heroes breathe 🌩
Most of phase 4 is a disorganized meh. I like WandaVision (mostly) Loki, Shang-chi…and nothing else comes to mind. Even though Kang is supposed to be the big bad for the foreseeable future, post of phase 4 just seem to be doing random stuff that is not setting up a larger narrative. I think Iron Man to Endgame was simply the most prolonged stretch of “Lightning in a bottle” and that may be behind us. But damn that was a ride! For now, I’ll like what I like and if they get a cohesive story for the next couple of phases…great. I’m just not expecting it anymore…
in my opinion this movie was very over-hated. i don’t think it’s a great movie but i thought jane and gorr were great, it had good side characters in valkryie. i think the only downfall was the comedy just being too much but i don’t think that it’s deserving of the amount of hate it gets
@@kaiielleI agree that Bale was PERFECT for the tone of what it SHOULD have been. They leaned too heavy into “kids movie” territory that Ant Man fits into. Ragnarok had the perfect balance of what it needed and Taika leaned too much into the comedy. I think he’s still set to do Thor 5 so we’ll see if he can redeem himself.
@kaiielle 00:20:48 Sexual Assault. I saw this in the trailer, knew it would be played up as a joke, and boycotted the movie. I hate Vakyrie, Jane & Korg, they are all disgusting useless unreliable garbage, and the flick scene proved that too. Taika has said he hated the Thor character, and only did it for the money. Btw s movie with a scene like this isn't for kids.
i stopped reading the books around 2012, i don't recall mjolnir ever being used in such a way...or being broken apart for that matter, i mean it is metal
It is described as being forged from the heart of a dying star, and the making of Stormbreaker seems to show a neutron star or white dwarf. So it is not ordinary matter like iron or steel. Degenerate matter (white dwarf) or neutronium are a million to billion times denser than regular matter, and would create their own local gravitational field. In our real world, a hammer-sized piece of those materials would explode back into regular matter, but in the MCU it appears space dwarf magic allows containing the dense matter and giving it some intelligence. The density explains why it can't be picked up by even Hulk, and the local gravity, when directed, why it can fly and change course. The intelligence can still control the pieces.
@@sim7409 I've read lots of sci-fi and fantasy books, but could never get into comics because they were too short a read for me. Then I went on to get a physics degree and work on space systems. So my comment was based on only what's in the MCU and Marvel TV shows and what I know from real science. The comics have served as source material for many superhero films, but they always change things. Heck, we've had three versions of spiderman, and I don't know how may versions of Superman and Batman. So I think of all of them, comics and film/TV, as versions of the multiverse of entertainment, but not canon of one for the other.
@SeedFactoryProject i see..the main reason i stopped buying the books, aside from price, is after it was obvious the MCU was influencing the source material
So, this one was a really big miss for me, on the whole. There were things that I really enjoyed about it, but... Taika Waititi's comedy was just... intrusive in this one. Ragnarok wound up with a good balance, but he was just... too unleashed in this one. If I have any degree of animosity to this one, it is in what I've learned about the behind-the-scenes nonsense that absolutely set this up for failure. That, along with the fact that Taika was really condescending to the VFX artists, who he and the studio had really given an impossible task. The MCU community has really turned on Taika since this one came out... and I don't blame them in the least. The movie really does have an unpleasant level of tonal whiplash, though. There REALLY are some scenes that hit, like the stuff with Gor... and Jane and Thor together... but then you get the damn screaming goats, the goofiness with the gods, and... yeah. Korg. It all just really does everything it can to keep us from fully emotionally committing to the movie, and it suffers massively for it in the end. Really excited for I Am Groot, though!
This movie should have gone full comedy or full drama. Trying (and seriously failing) to quickly go back and forth between the two severely hurts it. I actually love a lot of the dramatic material, and then have to endure way too much out of place slapstick comedy.
I was also disappointed we didn't see the Egyptian gods here. They play a role in the god butcher story in the comics. Missed opportunity to incorporate Moon Knight in the MCU proper...
This movie takes a lot of crap, but I really liked it and would place it in the top half of the MCU. Yeah, it's a bit over-the-top silly at times, but I still prefer it to the first two. And keep in mind, the narrative is kind of being presented by Korg, who may not be the most reliable source. Also, possibly unpopular opinion...I loved the Screaming Goats. 🤣 Edit: Yup, we completely disagree, but that's cool. Still a great reaction, Cheers and see you on the next one. 🥃☮❤⚡
Thor: Love and Thunder was the first marvel movie, I didn't watch in theater. As a hard copy fan I bought the blu ray and watched it. Sooo disappointing! Tried to watch it again with Taika's audio comment and after 10 minutes I was no longer able to listen to this man. He made silly comments and spoke like a child. This guy shouldn't be allowed to write the script of movies, which are directed by him! Greetings from Germany ;)
The movie was totally rushed to make a July 5th (I think) release date. It shows. I think Taika works best when he has time to let the movie come together organically. I think this also meant that they couldn't have Mark Mothersbaugh (or anyone) do any composing, and fell back on GnR.
I think the whole silly and goofy side of the film is representative of Thor's coping mechanism in dealing with depression, but like most people agreed it goes too far.
I totally see how this can be one of the weaker MCU entries for someone. It's one hell of a mess, from the comedy to the effects. What made me still enjoy it more than at least a few other MCU films, was that I could still feel the heart in there. It may be a bit of a shit show, but it's definitely not a soulless movie. I really liked the rom-com angle between Thor and Jane, the kids actually worked for me mostly and although we needed more of him, Christian Bale was outstanding as Gorr. But this honestly might go down in my ranking on a rewatch and tbh I'm not sure if I plan on rewatching it soon...or maybe ever. Though I feel that way about at least half of the MCU at this point, probably more 😅
Yeah, this one went off the rails... It looks like they had a *blast* making it, but they clearly got way too loose with the improv and playing around and none of it helped the story. In "Ragnorok" they managed to blend the humor and the drama, but I think they picked way too dramatic of a core story (starting with a dead child, Jane's fight with cancer... powerful stuff from the comics) and went with broad, goofy humor to lighten it and it makes for a mess, and you do feel the loss of what could have been a very powerful story had they just had the faith to play it more seriously.
A lot of us felt that Gorr had been totally wasted in this movie, and I definitely didn’t like the constant “jokes”, since it seemed like they were trying far too hard to be “cutesy” and fell flat most of the time.
Taika thought making a movie from Korgs pov would be funny. Its erratic and all over the place. The negative feedback has made him quite Marvel now. Chris wants to change direction with Thor as he also thought the movie had too much silliness. Although in defense of the goats they are from norse mythology lol. I also think they wantd to finalize the Jane storyline as well, but the movie should have been way more about that and Bale.
I fkukin love this film! It could partly be the heavily antipodean humour. Everything in this movie to me is seriously appealing. It even makes GnR appealing to me haha
I saw you watch it. I agreed with all the small twitches where your face showed the same surprise and dismay that I had. Taika is a wonderful director, outside of this movie. Please, please, watch "Jojo Rabbit"
No one seems to understand that the entire story/film is being told by Korg. That's why it's so weird with Stormbreaker being jealous and the like... It's all Korg's perspective.
Every time i see this movie i have a good laugh when i imagine Jane Foster and Valkyrae would be 2 man and Thor would be a woman. The sexism in this Movie would have melted Hollywood to the ground. Phase 4 was really special in collapsing the MCU.
Honestly my biggest problem with the movie is how they wasted bale and the character he plays. Jane I felt could have been in more the one movie also I feel the promise of keeping Jane safe ruins the idea of her becoming Thor, she’s able to lift the hammer because she’s worthy in the comics and not because of Thor making it protect her.
It's a movie so bad even Chris is like, "Yeeaaaaah, we missed the mark." Taiki took all the wrong lessons from the previous movie and just doubled down.
Always appreciated that you're a straight shooter and give your honest opinion on stuff.
Always and forever. Thank you!
"I actually love the look of that"
Thor embuing the children with his power as the lightning forms the world tree Yggdrassil is such a beautiful moment.
Once you realize that the whole movie is Korg telling the story, some of the decisions make more sense.
Let me know your thoughts below! I Am Groot is up next! Yes I watched it all. It will be a quick video so I'll likely get that out within the week.

Fun fact: Gorr’s daughter is played by Chris Hemsworth’s actual daughter.
31:08 Strormbreaker was never enchanted like Mjölnir, that's why Thanos almost killed Thor with it but was saved by Cap using Mjölnir.
Yeah I am not sure why I thought that Stormbreaker was like Mjolnir.
This is unquestionably one of the MCU movies of all time.
35:07 The jump-rope was cool, but the Laser-Eyes Bunny Rabbit is just amazing. 🤣🤣🤣
Bale is the best part of the movie, although Jane Foster Thor is pretty great as well.
I loved the black and white battle scene and it's one of my favorite battle scenes from the MCU, so I was a bit surprised that you didn't really like it, as it is widely praised! Great reaction anyways, looking forward to more of the MCU reactions!
Now that I understand the aesthetic of it was very intentional, I don't feel that way about it anymore.
After watching all your reactions, I knew based on your thumbnail, exactly how you’d feel.
41:15 "He's here, he's there, he's every f-ing where Roy Kent, Roy Kent!!!" If you remember Ted Lasso.
WHISTLE!!!
I know it was the point, still didn't land for me.
@@kaiielle Fair enough. Thank you.
Yeah, if you're not a fan of Guns N' Roses OR that genre/decade of music in general, then this movie could be a huge miss just from that alone.
It’s always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective."
This has sort of informed my views on Love and Thunder.
I won't spoil anything, but there is a particular special effect in a movie you haven't gotten to yet that will make you think, "Yeah, Love and Thunder actually looked pretty damned good, comparatively."
In the end, I think it's the lack of focus that does Love and Thunder in, but I find that if I just shut my brain off and let it be its own thing, I actually have quite a bit of fun with it.
Cheers!
I had to readjust my take on this one. It only works if you take it as a bedtime story read by Korg.
And that’s his real daughter
The introduction of two abstract entities in the MCU. Eternity and Love
You can always just watch my review part of the video! It's timestamped in the description.
Hey Kaielle.
Your closing thoughts were spot on with my opinion of this movie.
First, this is the first MCU movie that I did not like. I was not happy when I left the theater. Why?…
Secondly, this was way too damn goofy.
@@jaspershattered it’s not funny goofy. It’s stupid and annoying goofy. It’s also unbalanced with Christian Bale’s performance.
@@jaspershattered no. He hasn’t and he’s not supposed to be.
Yes, I definitely have an easier time with this movie with that perspective.
@@kaiielle it's a shame because it could've been a great movie with some good editing and a few extra scenes.
This was probably the weakest movie of this phase for me….i never hated it but I can understand a lot of the criticisms
Actually, I would probably rate The Marvels below this one, personally. I will agree that I don't really hate it... but it is a massive miss for me. The Marvels, though... actually bothered me.
@@Drake844221 the marvels is phase 5
@@Drake844221 The Marvels was phase 5, it had to be because Ms Marvel was one of the last things released in that phase.
Personally, I think The Eternals was worse. Like this movie, it was a good concept but tried to fit way too much into a film format. Love and Thunder is definitely still very near the bottom.
@@Drake844221Dork.
I actually quite liked this movie but I do like comedy inputs
Underrated movie. This movie has its very grating moments, but when it cooks it COOKS.
"People liked that over the top humor last time. What if we turn it up to 10,000? Will that make it grating? Nah, should be fine."
If you watch it through those lenses, you can say, “Yeah, it’s a fun film.”
Not my favorite Thor film. Becomes more understandable once you see it as Korg “narrating” what we’re watching.
Can’t wait for your rewatch of the MCU & your analysis. People tend to forget that Phases 1 - 3 had their major flaws too that Fans took note of.
That's definitely a thing I'm looking forward to about Phases 1-3!
I lowkey love this movie.
Catch you for the next one
EDIT: Oh, and those fucking goats........
I didn't like Thor joking abot Lady Siff's arm being in Vahalla.
That ended up costing a lot of points for me.
I thought it was one of the better jokes in the whole movie
My criticisms about the film are summed up
1. Lady Sif was wasted.
2. Gorr should have been used way more and the overall tone should have been darker and heavier.
3. They should have killed Korg in that scene with Zeus
4. Valkyrie should not have been wishy-washy with wanting to die and then not joining Thor in the final battle because she would die? Very confusing character motivations
5. Tone down the Guns 'n' Roses
Overall I like the concept but have some problems with the execution of the film.

Jojo Rabbit is Taika Waititi's magnum opus.
Taika did one too many Marvel movies, and this was the one. I couldn't agree more about the conflicting tones of the movie and how they wasted a really good Christian Bale performance in THIS movie. I felt like it was the MCU's first real miss.
What do you mean by "wasted a really good christian bale performance"? Can you explain?
@@sheepz9575 Bale was good in this movie - the movie itself was not.
i feel you're right, It was too much.
There are definitely good moments in it, for sure.
I actually liked the screaming goats. They make me laugh every time.
This movie can't be hated enough, just like the loser who directed it.
@kaiielle
00:20:48 Sexual Assault.
@@SeedFactoryProject mjolnir is said to be uru metal in source material, enchanted to only let those worthy of the power of Thor to wield it
@@sim7409 I've read lots of sci-fi and fantasy books, but could never get into comics because they were too short a read for me.
@SeedFactoryProject
i see..the main reason i stopped buying the books, aside from price, is after it was obvious the MCU was influencing the source material
@SeedFactoryProject
it seems the hulk was able to crush mjolnir once in older comics, tho i do not believe the fragments acted the same way as in MCU
They could have been there, since we only saw one side of the stadium seating.
Edit: Yup, we completely disagree, but that's cool. Still a great reaction, Cheers and see you on the next one. 🥃☮❤⚡
Hello Movies With KL How are you doing today?😊
Good! How are you?
@@kaiielle I'm Doing Good Also Nice Movie Reaction!
Waititi has explained that he just really likes Guns-n-Roses. That's a case of the Director overriding the composer and music supervisor.
I think the whole silly and goofy side of the film is representative of Thor's coping mechanism in dealing with depression, but like most people agreed it goes too far.
If they were targeting children with this movie, I don't think they would have mentioned ORGIES on Mount Olympus... Hahaha!!
If they were, it didn't work well.
Chris has said his kids' friends have all criticized the movie lmao.
Though I feel that way about at least half of the MCU at this point, probably more 😅
This is absolutely two wildly different movies happening at the same time.
Can’t believe they got Bale to play a villain and wasted it on this parody of Thor.
I felt they over did the comedy in this one. Also wasn't a fan of the hammer being jealous.
I fkukin love this film! It could partly be the heavily antipodean humour. Everything in this movie to me is seriously appealing. It even makes GnR appealing to me haha
I love that!
No, we get it. It's just a terrible choice.
wish they were more true to source material for gorr...since they decided to use him
I agreed with everything you said. Christian Bale was the only watchable element to this film. It’s totally sad.
✌️😎
This movie had no idea what it wanted to be. Thunder did not strike twice for Taiki Waititi, it was a big fail.
Every time i see this movie i have a good laugh when i imagine Jane Foster and Valkyrae would be 2 man and Thor would be a woman. The sexism in this Movie would have melted Hollywood to the ground. Phase 4 was really special in collapsing the MCU.
Huh?
A misstep for me. Leaned too far into slapstick for me, and a complete waste of Christian Bale's talent.
It was because of this movie that I was done with the MCU
@@RayMcElroy50 shut up
Honestly my biggest problem with the movie is how they wasted bale and the character he plays.
This movie hits different when you’re a scorned religious person
