    I've been watching a lot of videos from you lately. Man this really is a breath of fresh air, there's just so little in depth review of basses in general. And you, playing the same riff everytime while turning knobs is very appreciated.. instead of someone noodling away or showing off. Thank you for that, You deserve more subscribers.

      Thank you for the kind words my man! Massively appreciated! All I’ve really done is try and create what I was always looking for when I was looking at reviews, and it seems that was what some of the rest of the bass community wanted too! The subscribers are coming, and the numbers are getting bigger every day, and I’m so grateful that people like what I’m doing enough to keep updated. Thank you again, Sir! T

    Really great tone :)
    Was always using D'addario Chromes on mine (Sunburst) so far, but I might try the La Bellas now as well.
    Couldn't agree more with you about the quality of these basses btw - every 50s Precision I came along so far just had _that_ tone. It seems like every time I'm coming back to that particular bass and it always feels like "home". Keep it well and never give it away. :)

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally love this bass! I may change the tuners eventually, but it's really not an upgrade that *needs* to be done. Incredible quality and value, far exceeds most of the Fenders that have passed through my hands that were non-custom shop. In fact it's only the second Fender I've ever owned for that reason!
      Give the LaBellas a go, for me and the tone and feel I'm after they beat the chromes, but I did a whole tour with a Dingwall Super P (in fiesta red of course!) with chromes, and had nothing but compliments!
      It will be staying with me for years to come, worry not. Thanks for the comment! T

    My friend has one of these. And I just got the similar Vintera II 50s P bass, gold anodized too, but in desert sand. Absolutely love it. But the first thing I went to do was looking which La Bella Flats to put on it. Just like I did with my first bass, a Squier CV Mustang. I'll either go with these, or the 760FL, which are available locally, a bit cheaper. And looks like the tension is only slightly higher, but quite close.

      Interesting, as they’re still available over here in the UK! I think it sounds very similar to the Roadworn, I just chose this one as I didn’t like the feel of the Roadworn or how the relic finish looked in comparison to the custom shop relics for example. It just looked obviously faked in person. Still great basses though! T

    Great tone man!! I'm searching for a good p bass with 7.25 radius and unfortunately there is no store to go and try all the fenders models.The USA models are all 9.5 radius.. How is the quality of these Mexicans vs USA ?have you tested others? Like Nate Mendels? And last , could you make a video with roundwounds on it ? Thanks

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! I I think the Mexican 50s series can hang with US standards easily. As with all Fenders they vary, and i'd recommend playing as many as possible until you find one or two that you feel are better than the others. Jump on those whilst you can! I have played a Nate Mendel and that had a similar level of quality to the 50s. Really good for the money! I didn't like the jazz style neck or SD Quarter Pounder pickup though. On a P thick neck = Fat tone. Unfortunately, I don't own this P anymore as I'm playing a Custom Shop 59 P nowadays (I always wanted a rosewood board!). Overall I'd say the best value from a Fender probably comes from the top end of the Mexican range, but going for US or CS does have its perks. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions. T

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Living The RV Life. I’m a sucker for a thick neck too. These are thicker than modern necks but not as thick as my 59 Custom Shop. They’re a little thicker all the way across rather than having a lot of depth back to front. Certainly bigger than modern necks, but not the biggest. The original 60s P necks feel chunkier to me, haven’t tried original 50s yet.

      One other probably silly question but will the one 10" cab shake my small house bass-wise?
      I want to get a smaller cab cause right now with the 1x12" cab I'm using I have to really dial the bass back or else the whole house just shakes lol. I just want to be able to run more bass at home. I'm using a 300w Mesa Walkabout with the stock scout cab which doesn't really get any louder after 1/2 way. It just gets bigger and fuller, not louder which is fine cause I don't need anymore volume at home but sometimes I wish I had a little more with the full band.
      The Barefaced cab is 8 ohm though so that'll drop the power to 175/200w and that's what concerns me. The only other time I ran this amp at 8 ohms it sounded not-so-great but that was likely the cab itself. I wish they offered a 4 ohm version so I could run full power through it. I'm checking out a couple of 4 ohm Eden 1x10" as well.
      I Yeah, I know, practice amp it isn't but it's what I have & sounds great! Big, full sound.👍🏻

    great playing as always I find flats aren't really my thing as they are stiff feeling but I bought some light gauge la bellas and light fenders one day I'll find a bass to put them on my basses sound good with rounds right now. This 50s bass didn't pop with the tone rolled all the way off kinda got muddy then all the way on with the tone I didn't feel I liked it as the treble sounds slightly not p bass sounding I hate being honest when I can't be constructive but you are a great player you can play any bass and make it sound good

      I popped my A string and got a free replacement from guitar center:; a round wound string. My bass had flats on it from the previous owner. Although the round wound is Clangy sounding I love the feeling of it, much more loose and free feeling as the flats do feel stiff like you said

    Hi, great demo and good sound, too! Which gauge are you using here? Just tried chromes on the same bass (the black lacquer version), with which I'm not totally happy with. • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ron! The gauge is 42-100. I haven't tried an overdrive in front of it as i'm mostly a clean player, but I could definitely do a demo if you were interested in that. I too loved the Freddie Washington vibe, he's a big influence on my approach to a P - I'm one of those that totally digs the slapped P bass tone! Let me know if you need to know more! T

    • @r.heinrich3364
      @r.heinrich3364 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, man. But I don't wanna cause you any trouble. Was just curious, if you've already tried it with one. I myself mostly play a clean sound. My amp gain is mostly around 10 o' clock, so I get a clean signal as possible. I'm using an Ampeg preamp with a built in overdrive (the Scrambler) in front of my amp. I play in an Indie-/Alternative rock band. And some of our songs are kinda meant to have that bass grit :). But at home, I'm more into funk and soul.
      I suppose those La Bella Low Tension strings are similar tensionwise similar to most roundwound strings, right?
      Anyways, thanks a lot and Merry Christmas!

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron Heinrich no problem Ron! I don’t do the indie/rock thing too much anymore so I’ve not had my OD pedal out that much! Funk/soul/jazz/pop is what I get called for nowadays... I would actually say the La Bellas are some of the lowest tension feeling strings I’ve ever played in both round and flat wounds. Think Dunlop super brights (if you’ve ever tried them?) in terms of tension and that should give you some idea. Very low tension, which I find much more expressive and comfortable. Merry Christmas to you too! 🎄

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I have played them - very different strings! The deep talking are very tense and have a massive, classic sound. Put them on and it’s motown straight away. The Low tension are just that - a lot lower tension, and will allow you easier access to vibrato. I don’t think they’re as punchy as the Deep talking, but I find the feel more expressive so the LTF are my choice. T

    Hello, I’m between the 760FX-S and the low tension LTA-4A-S Labella strings.
    I’ve never played the low tension, see you’ve got them and ask you or anyone here the same question:
    Am I correct in my assumption the low tensions will be a lot easier for me to play for more hours?
    Be well and appreciate the time. Have tendon issues that now necessitate shorter scales, low action and easier strings so chasing the gear and EQing the rest.

      Hey Jason! I find these low tensions the easiest strings to play for a long time. There really are “low tension” - I would say they’re almost ‘super low’, but I have them on my semi-hollow-body Warwick star bass at this point for practice and anything that needs that old school semi-hollow sound, and they really work a treat! I would definitely give these a shot as they are really low resistance and sound like they might facilitate a few more hours’ playing at a time, given your tendon issues. And they’re a top quality string which helps! Let me know if you have any more questions or if I can help any more! T

    Does this bass have quite high action and a hard to play neck for people with smaller hands?

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the action set quite high! But that’s because it’s my preference and I get a better tone doing so. The neck is quite wide but not too deep, so it maybe more difficult than others. However, most of the time you get used to neck profiles and quite often I find a bigger neck helps my technique. T

    Has anyone played the labellas superlights and compare to this? Been curious about that extra light gauge

    How's the smoothness of these strings? Have tried Chromes and were sticky and gummy, and overall hated them bc I'm used to Elixir rounds but wanted to change to flats. Thanks

      KJ smoothest strings out there! So so soft and smooth. From the moment you get them out of the packet that will be the first thing you think - guaranteed. T

      Question ... Can they be used on a Jazz Bass "thru-body"? I know there are flats that say they're not designed for "thru body"

    • @dtales77
      @dtales77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once the stickiness of the Chrome is gone it’s all new world and the sound is 1000% people nowadays are not patient and yes the vintera is super good but please stop shitting on Americana original they are top basses well build !

    Sounds great, except slap just does not sound good on flats. Seems best to leave that to j-bass and rounds territory. Other than that, nice bass, nice playing.

    • @TylerSpicer

      Hey! I agree, I wouldn't really do much slap on flat wounds, in fact I slap very little. However, I would occasionally pop, and I quite like how that comes across with this bass. I actually really like the sound of a slapped P bass as Freddie Washington used on Patrice Rushen's 'Forget Me Nots' so that might why I like it so much, there's a certain sound to the upper strings popped on a P that I know some people dislike. Generally though I think stick to the J bass for slap, and even better make it a Sadowsky ;) Thanks for the comment! T

    Great tones and technique. I love flatwounds for at-home use, but I find they aren’t great live. The sound gets a bit lost in the mix for my taste.

    • @TylerSpicer
      @TylerSpicer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely depends on the mix and band, but have been in settings where I’d totally agree. I’ve had some sound engineers question if my bass was broken or “that was the sound you’re going for” wearing flats, whereas no one has ever mentioned it with rounds. However, great sound engineers and studios have loved flats. I must say though, not so trendy in a lot of instances, which is a shame as I love them!
