I know I’m lame but I would have loved to see you start the cross stitch off just because I’m a bit on the slow side but also have ADHD and my brain goes everywhere. Cross stitch is so helping me learn to focus. It’s been amazing.
Great tutorial! I only have one little quibble: Don't use anything else on your gridding but DMC or any cross-stitch specific thread! I used some very old threads from my mother's old sewing kit and they stained the fabric! I ended up having to stitch my design, and then went back and stitched A sky over it to make the finished design an Edgerton edge piece, it wouldn't wash out!
I hate to be negative, but this would be more helpful if it showed how to start gridding, with 'blank' fabric (i.e. fabric that didn't already have gridding on it). It took me a little while to figure out where to start - how far from the edges, but it's been a long work day and I'm just looking for something where I don't have to think too much lol
I don't think it's negative at all. I'm a true beginner (waiting for materials to arrive to even start my first small piece!) & I think for a true "beginners guide", we should see every step. Starting the gridding, the middle steps we see here, as well as actually stitching your project with the grid stitches in place! I know she mentions how to do it, but as an absolute beginner, I'm struggling to imagine what that even looks like. Great video, for sure, but the vast majority of beginner guides on TH-cam need to include so much more than they do...
I’m literally working on my first piece now and this was really easy for me to understand you’re folded in half both ways tying out at the end of your thread and start grading count to eight. It’s pretty straightforward.
What a fantastic tutorial, really clear and to the point. I feel fairly confident now in giving gridding a go on my next large project. Thank you 😊 I'd love to see a tutorial on parking threads, I think that's what it's called. Xx
Thanks so much Clare! I put a lot of time and effort into this video so that’s lovely to hear it’s well received and helpful! Great idea - thank you. I’ll get to work on that in the coming weeks!
Thanks for this, I have been doing cross stitch for many years and this is the best gridding method I have used. I tried the preprinted grids but as I do such fine work, like blackwork, I am not convinced the lines have entirely washed out. See? You can teach old dog new tricks.
Id never heard of gridding but it makes so much sense now that ive seen this video. Im very likely to try it next time i do a project on aida. I was wondering though how you would grid on even weave as the holes are so small. Have you ever tried that?
That's look very tidy. I am going to try. One suggestion, the central section of the fabric should be gridded in a different colour in order to identified the centre.
Thank you for that helpful video. I’ve gridded before but had trouble pulling the threads out afterwards. Then I bought some gridded fabric, but when it was all done the “temporary” lines simply wouldn’t wash out, so the piece was ruined. I’ll now try your way of gridding, leaving the little blank square at each 10 junction. Wish me luck!
Thank you for this tutorial. I have started hello sunshine and have already made some significant personalisations!😉 would you recomend gridding now before i go any further?
I'm not sure how easy it is to grid on an already started piece, however I would make sure the next element you stitch is closest to the last element you stitch meaning less of an area to count. Double check if you need to :-)
I'm gonna try this on my fabric, it's my first time doing a cross stitch that's not a kit, and it's very exiting but I'm also scared to mess up, I hope this'll help, and I hope I'll be able to get the grid out after I'm done, I'm quite messy in the back of my cross stitches..
I have been working on a project but I am finding it difficult to find my place. It takes me forever to count and find it again. I have been watching the videos on gridding and I wish I saw them before I started. Is it possible to start gridding on a WIP?
Thanks for watching and we're glad you found this helpful. That's a good question, but I am not sure of the answer - you are welcome to ask within our Facebook group - we have a fantastic community facebook.com/groups/caterpillarXS/
I just finished a project which I had done gridding for the first time. I took out the gridding this morning as wasn’t happy to see that you can tell where the gridding lines were and the 4 corners of each square. Does this disappear once it is washed and ironed? I spent 2 1/2 yrs making this and will be terribly upset if it doesn’t.
This really depends on the type of thread you used. Here's another fab Beginners Guide to watch which goes into this a little th-cam.com/video/Wv1pHzAsqok/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
@@CaterpillarCrossStitch it's a big game of Thrones piece I'm stitching for my husband - I'll post it in the Facebook group on sunday if I remember it 😅
How do you not work over your grid thread surly when stitches are next to each other you have to go over or through the small holes to make a X don’t understand
You do stitch over the grading stitches. When you are finish you pull the grid stitches out. I did it on my first project I ever did, and it really is quite easy.
I've never understood how you're supposed to avoid stitching down the guide thread. Seems like it would be a MUCH bigger problem than stitching without any gridding in the first place
Thank you so much for watching! You can also use a thin fishing line instead of the cotton thread - fishing line cannot be pierced by mistake and it's therefore very easy to remove. Hope this helps!
I'm sorry that you didn't find this video helpful. We do have another presented by Ford that you can find here - hopefully this one will be more beneficial th-cam.com/video/Wv1pHzAsqok/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared

She said to just start at the centre, so that should determine how far from the edges you are
I totally agree that for a beginner it is not easy or a tutorial on on how to do gridding.
I’m literally working on my first piece now and this was really easy for me to understand you’re folded in half both ways tying out at the end of your thread and start grading count to eight. It’s pretty straightforward.
I agree totally. It’s a shame because the video jumps all over the place - normally the tutes on CCS are so good. What a shame.
Today my very first caterpillar cross stitch order ( also my first bigger project ) arrived, so this video comes just at the perfect moment 🤗
Amazing! So glad it arrived safely. Good luck - will look forward to seeing your progress 😊
How exciting for you. I hope you enjoyed the process. After 2 years you must be a pro 😀
Oh I wish someone had taught me about gridding years ago! Definitely going to try this out next time, many thanks!!
thank you. I love to listen to your explanations and I am getting much smarter. Stictching will be more fun because of your methods
Thanks so much! We're pleased to hear the videos are helping!
Thank you so much. You explain it better than anybody else.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you found this useful :)
Very helpful video. Appreciate your clear explanation of how to do gridding.
Thanks for watching!

This video is really helpful, I'm about to start a massive project where there are big chunks of the same colours. So this is really helpful. ❤️👍

Great tip! you can absolutely do that if it makes it easier :)
08/10/2023. Have you done a more recent tutorial on gridding? Maybe on linen? And putting in the middle vertical and horizontal grid lines first?
We haven't yet but we will look into this for you : )
Thank you
Excellent video. Thank you so much ❤️

Anyone have a link to the pen she was talking about. I’m going to check the supply kit list but trying to find it on Amazon.
We don't have a link unfortunately. Thank you for watching!
can you use a metalic thread so it will stand out
trying to make a photo into a Crosstitch pattern, is there a way to do it without using a computer program?
The best way to create your own cross stitch pattern is www.loveitstitchit.com! It's a website :)
How do you remove the thread after completed i have tried this before and could not remove the thread
This really depends on the type of thread you used.

I'm stitching quite a big piece and wish I have gridded it before I started stitching 🙈
Which piece is it? You can always give it a try next time : )

Could you still grid the areas that are unstitched currently? =)

Should you start at the middle of the fabric?
We recommend starting in the middle yes :)
Watching this after messing up a big project 🥲
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Hope this tutorial helps, good luck :)
Same 😂. I’ll be gridding from now on!
Aah I see 😮
Que pena que no este subtitulado en Español🌲🌻🌵💕

I’m confused on how to actually start gridding my large project. I’m sorry. 😩
Why 8 lines ?

Doesn't really help beginners who have never gridded fabric before.
