Which refractometer of the lineup are you using? Seems to me, that even the Air version should be enough for brewing. I’m fairly impressed with the simplicity and price point. Thinking about ordering the pro model, if it’s sufficient.
Excellent stuff!! Your festbier recipe is pretty similar to mine, minus the Hallertau Blanc haha. That being said, Hallertau Blanc is legit one of my favorite hops!
Very good description of the differences. I brewed both a Festbier and a Märzen side by side last month in preparation for an Oktoberfest party I’m hosting this weekend. Already drinking them both, the differences are interesting. Festbier slightly lighter and hoppier. Märzen slightly darker and more malty. Both are good, but I think I prefer the Festbier over the Märzen.
I just received all my ingredients to make this beer and surprise surprise! I also ordered the blanc hops.:( I will be travelling to my local brew shop to get t he correct hops. Thanks for the video! Cheers!
I'll take a liter! I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't know there was a dark mode in BrewSmith until I saw you post those screenshots of the recipes. I'm switching immediately.
Ha, Gnome! So I thought the same thing, but didn't know that I knew and when I fired it up to config it was already in dark mode... LOL! Makes sense though, my desktop is set to dark mode as is YT and almost every app I get ahold of.
Gets me stocked to watch your videos for this long and see now you're getting sponsors! Proud of you dude, you deserve it! Next level quality videos. I'm using Hallertau Blanc right now for the first time in a neipa. Haven't tasted it, but I'm excited to! I also noticed it was confusing that there was multiple with the same first name.
O'zapft is! Did you notice a difference to the Märzen you fermented at a higher temp? BTW if a recipe only says "Hallertau" it's probably referring to Hallertau Tradition hops.
You still need the original gravity and a conversion calc to get an accurate reading from the FG, but as I mentioned the app does make that easy by doing the calc for you
What was the alpha acid difference? The Blanc I use is more than double. Was it too bitter? I use Blanc as an aroma hop on non traditional mexican lager. And it lends a wonderful fruity grape ness.
Awesome video! Did I see you use the refractometer to measure FG!? I was under the impression that alcohol threw off the readings so you could only use them for OG. Did you check if it was accurate next to a regular hydrometer? If this thing works I am def getting one.
Yeah I did cross check the reading against a hydrometer and they were accurate. And you just have to use a conversion calc or the app that automatically converts the reading for you
@@TheBruSho Great Video. Does the corresponding Refrac app have functionality to keep track of your wort brix and then post-fermentation brix and then compute the ABV directly in the app?
Great video, as always, thanks for sharing! I have a question, both of my recent brews has been really dry at the end, the yeast has eaten all the sugar. Tried to brew a wheat beer with a proper yeast for such type, but it turned out very dry. What is best way to avoid such outcome? If I somehow stop the fermentation during the primary ferm, how will I get bubbles during the bottling process? I am confused, please help 🙂
So I transfer from the claw hammer to the anvil bucket fermenter. Then from there I go into the keg. The fermenter has a hose adapter to gas tubing that I attach a liquid connect to to transfer down the outpost for minimal oxygen exposure
What’s the ball valve you have on the Anvil bucket fermenter? It doesn’t look like the factory one, correct? I’m wondering if it would work on my Foundry, as the factory valve has a slow leak, even with replaced gaskets. Thanks in advance!
Good eye, my original valve didn’t fit quite right so I emailed them and they sent me this beefy one. Might be worth reaching out to see if they can help you
I’m new to homebrewing..when you’re adding hops to a recipe do you always add the same amount (always 1 oz no matter the batch size, for example) verses adding more or less grain for a 1 gallon vs 5 gal? Hope that makes sense
Hey! So it depends on the recipe and the bitterness/flavor/aroma you’re trying to get out of them. There are a ton of hops and some add more bitterness and some add more flavor. And generally the longer you boil the hops the more bitter, the less you boil the more flavor and aroma you get from them. So really you can change it up every recipe, it’s like a lever you can adjust to fine tune the recipe. It won’t always be the same amount.
@@TheBruSho So if I wanted to make this same recipe, but instead make a 1 gal batch, should I still use the amount of hops you used for your 5 gal batch?
@@Chi_Bro_2000 no you would need to scale it down. I recommend using a brewing software they have a function to easily scale recipes at a click of a button. You’ll probably need a lot less hops
Drinking with a Mass - Stick your whole hand through the handle, minus the the thumb and cup the actual vessel with your fingers, the thumb goes over the top of the handle. This helps after 7 hours in a beer tent in Munchen😂🍺🍻🇬🇧👍🏻
The water and extract that recirculates is sprayed through a nozzle causing hot side oxidation. Hot extract recirculated through a grain bed for a long period of time causes over sparge which extracts tannin. The conversion rest and secondary fermentation was skipped how did you produce lager? Complex starch, amylopectin, contains the ingredients that forms body and mouthfeel in ale and lager. The starch was thrown away with the spent mash, paid for. The rest temperature wasn't high enough to burst the starch. The body and mouthfeel in the beer that you made came from protein gunk and sweet tasting, nonfermenting types of sugar that Alpha released from simple starch during the rest and to remove the carried over gunk finings were purchased. You made moonshiners beer with a brewing system designed for making the style of beer. To produce pseudo, ale and lager you have to use the step mash method and under modified, low protein, malt.
Thanks for the comment Michael, haven’t heard from you in a while. But I am super happy with the results of this drink no matter what it is technically called. But I would be interested to see a side by side comparison of what you describe to see if there’s actually a noticeable difference.
I've had that refractometer for about a year and it's garbage. It's all over the place and readings are never the same. The app is horrible and connecting to the app is a pain. Great idea, but horrible execution if you need reliability. I've tested this against a calibrated hydrometer over and over, and it's readings have been all over the place and yes, I calibrated the refractometer for each use using distilled water. Stay away, it's Chinese trash.
FestBier🍺 or Marzen 🥨? Which is your fav?
Team Marzen
Both… 🍻🍻🍻
I prefer festbier by a long shot.
Märzen
Marzen!
I totally appreciate it when brew tubers actually include their mistakes in the video and don't edit them out. Shows us you're humans too!
More importantly we learn from that mistake. I didn’t know about the differences in HT until now.
Tomorrow I'm going shopping for Schweinbrat, but I guess online shopping for a brewday is due too :) Prost to the recipe and video!
I love Hallertauer Mittelfrüh. Just an absolute classic.
I once brewed a wonderful Wheat beer with Hallertau Blanc and a belgian wheat yeast.
I love how the oktoberfest music ran through the whole episode 🍻 got me really motivated to brew a quick festbier for semesterstart with lutra
That music just makes me so happy so I had to use it.
The lederhosen suits you well! 👏🍺
Trent rocking the Tracht. Looking good my friend. Your videos have that polished look.
Thank you buddy!

Hard to say since it’s been so long but I would say this one was very clean. And good call on tradition, I’ll try that next time
