Thank you for this info! I'd ask for some tips on growing lettuce in another vid comment but didn't see this one until now. Wrote down the ones you said to grow in heat of summer since I am in the deep south. Once it hits the middle of June I think growing lettuce here will be history until fall time. lol

This year I sowed a lot of my greens at the base of larger plants, such as fava beans, peas, and even underneath my tomatoes. So far they're growing beautifully and get a nice shade cover! I usually do a variety of lettuces, kale, spinach, chard, and arugula. I added mizuna this year and I'm so excited about it. Our main garden is in our front yard which gets tons of sun, so I'm also thinking about doing some salad beds in the backyard which get a great mix of sun and shade. I'm in the Pacific Northwest where we get loooooong days this time of year, but I really think it's the heat that causes the bolting.

Another fun & informative video! Have you heard of minutina (Stella Herba)? It's a delicious salad green that does not get bitter in the heat. MiGardener has a couple videos on it & sells the seeds. It's great to add to the salad mix. Also, planting lettuce in the shade of other plants is one way I keep a cooler micro climate for my lettuce. I started gardening 4 years ago & I'm learning to grow as much of our own food as possible here in the beautiful Pacific northwest ❤ You guys are awesome & I love watching your videos! I live in Jacksonville Florida and have two massive tortoises that are my babies. Because they’re so large they require a large amount of greens. I’ve been buying they’re lettuce from the grocery store but I thought why not just grow it myself. So far this year I’ve had very good success with romaine and collard greens. I just planted a heap load of Oakleaf lettuce and they seem to be doing very good. My main concern is the Florida summer heat. I’m not too sure on what I’m supposed to do. Your video has helped give me some good ideas. I’m having a lot of fun growing my tortoises food. Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Great video! Where in the south are you? I’m also in the south - Alabama. It gets so hot here, hot and humid! I was thinking about planting some New Zealand Spinach (not a “true” spinach), which I read is very heat tolerant. However, I watched a TH-cam video about it and the guy in the vid said eating it raw in large quantities can lead to kidney failure, but eating cooked is fine. I wanted a salad green!! LOL I might just wait and plant some lettuce in late summer. I did consider planting them in a shady area and also on the north side of some straw bales. Maybe I’ll figure something out! Best - Adam

The Fit Farmer - Mike Dickson
Hi Mike! I think Malabar and New Zealand spinach are two different plants, but neither are considered a “true” spinach, but used in much the same way. Also one (maybe Malabar?) sometimes needs trellises...? I haven’t grown either, just read about them.
Here is a link to that TH-cam video I mentioned. His comment regarding kidney problems is at about the 3:30 mark.

It can’t be the day length. I grow lettuce yr round inside my house
Hydrophobic. My plants are cool and i control light time
But the red romaine lettuce always does this! It does it after i have been cutting and leaving the plant to keep growing. It’ll give me great lettuce for a few nice size cuttings. And after my 4th-5th cutting it will shoot up and wow so quickly it shoots off and flowers
I’m hoping i can harvest the seeds and I’m happy to use those seeds
But id really like to keep getting lettuce leave cuttings longer.

    Hello
Just wanted to share a delicious Mexican quesadilla. Its made with the beautiful flowers from squash, pumpkin zucchini. So pick the flowers os the veggie when they are nice and still a bit crisp. If they are grown organic all you have to check for are bugs inside the flower. Then the ingredients you need are any type of melty cheese of your choice we perfer jack. So then once it's stuffed with the cheese ya want to cover the flowers in a biit of flower to dry it out to get a nice coat of eggwash seasoned with just a bit of salt or garlic salt. Pan fry in just a lil bit of oil to coat the pan. All you want is for the egg to cooked and the cheese to be melted. So just warm up a tortilla add your delicious flower like a taco add favorite salsa and serve. Trust me you will be addicted to these delicious squash flower quesadillas.

Do you think during summer would be better to plant lettuce in a planter or box, take it outside in the early morning hours, and then bring it inside for the rest of the day? Since the problem seems to be more hours of daylight, maybe changing the location after a few hours to a darker room could help? IF the problem happens to be the heat though, could I place the container where the lettuce grows on top of something cool, like frozen water bottles or something like that? What do you think? Sounds too dumb? I'm planning to start a small backyard vegetable garden and I'm gathering as much information as possible before I start, and something I keep reading everywhere is that lettuce and spinach mostly need cooler temperatures and low daylight hours, but me and my family eat lettuce and spinach during spring/summer not fall/winter! So I'm trying to figure out how could I grow them during summer so I know what to buy, if I should build a raised bed or just buy large containers and all that.

We usually only keep it on for the first week or so, after that we take it off. We will just get less cuttings off of each bed in the summer but it grows so much faster in the summer that we will continue to plant more beds of lettuce. I hope that makes sense.

The only place you can get the salanova is Johnny's Seed and they carry Muir Lettuce too.

I didn't even notice the name change and I knew it was you. LOL We haven't had an issue with rabbit because our dogs keep them away. I will have to see if I can find some suggestions on that for you.

Kiddo go to the barbershop and ask for all of the floor sweepings. Spread it around the garden and among the plants that you were having problems with being eaten. Rabbits do not care for the scent. Also if you have any one gallon glass jugs,

You can clip the top when they start to bolt but they are usually already bitter by then.
