I have giant African land snails known as gals in there cumuniy (don't judge me) they u these mites too but I changed the tank so I'm Scot free from the pesky mites
Hey Mikey, Great vid! You have multiple species of ant mites in this colony. With my experience in mites, I've noticed that the white mites are moreover garbage cleaners and feed upon the colony leftovers as well as their waste. I haven't seen them do any damage to my colonies and I've had them around for years. They're quite beneficial to the sanitation of the nest and out-world. However, the flat-bodied maroon colored ones sticking to the gasters and crevices are in fact the parasitic kind. I've see them heavily attack my colonies in the past but I've come up with a solution upon which I'm happy to share with you. I have a few solutions which have worked in the past for me, 1) Lemons - Sliced lemons are a great external deterrent to the parasitic mites, but to win this war you'll have to attack them on an internal level as well. You'll have to put concentrated lemon juice into their honey-water, as well as a touch of maple syrup. When the ants feed on this formula, their hemolymph gets an acidic spike to it as well as a immunity boost defense system with the maple syrup. The formula will literally have your parasitic mites dwindle daily as the mites cannot handle the spikes to the hemolymph. The formula is also beneficial for the ants as it gives them an extra kick of vitamins, minerals and acids otherwise unavailable to them. The ants will refuse the formula themselves if it's not a sweet-dominated mixture. 2) Raisins - With raisins, you'll want to cut them in half. The ants will love the sweet taste of the sugars in the raisins. As they feed on the raisins, mites will actually get pulled off from the stickiness of the inside portion of the raisins. I've used this raisins trick for about 3 years and you will literally see mites drowning in the raisins. 3) Clean, but do not purge. - No matter how much you will clean your outworld, you will see mites. In some form or another, they can and will arrive. I believe in a Buddhist's approach to this problem --- the discovery of predatory mites of your parasitic mites. There is a guaranteed presence of predatory mites in your outworld, and maybe even in your ants' nest. Nature always has a way of balancing the tables, and I notice that with a lot of cleaning, one reduces the chance for predatory mites to take hold. Predatory mites will annhilate the parasitic prey mites. It's kind of like a mini war down there! Make sure to maintain the raisins and lemon solutions, but also give the other mites yet undiscovered a chance to predate the parasitic mites. 4) BOIL Your ant food! - Literally for everything, you must boil the water before adding the ingredients to your ant food. Foreign mites, funghi and other substances have easy access into the nest if you don't boil beforehand. When the water is boiling, add your honey, maple syrup, sugars, lemon concentrate and food coloring (to record data). - I put drop feeder roaches and mealworms into a cup of boiling water before I serve them to my ants. It may sound cruel, but it offers them a quick death and also cleans them of any parasites, viral or not. Remove after about 15-30 seconds and everything will be cleaned. With this info, you should eradicate your mite problem. I've defeated every mite invasion that's ever attacked my ants! Cheers!

P.S. Ant love forever!

I hope you can share this lemon-treatment with all of your fellow ant keepers, especially your customer! That way, you can help people avoid a scare like this! I'm glad the Golden Empire didn't suffer any negative effects, either. Having just been named, it probably would have been hard to lose them.
I am no ant professional so i wont vote but i will say it definitely seems that it must be doing them good why else would they be taking their food on to it? Maybe they just like a little lemon juice on their food like we add lemon to fish lol
So this is off topic but I wanted to thank you. My sister had a little "ant-farm" when we were little. They got out one night and decided the best route for their escape was me in my bed. I woke up very quick, didn't know why, then felt a pain in my face. Turned the light on and it looked like my comforter was moving. Jumped up,and my hair, face were covered. Parents drove me to the hospital because i was having an allergic reaction. After that, the fear of ants was born. I dont know why or how I came upon your channel/videos. It took me awhile of pausing, postponing the videos but I got through the 1st one in about 2 days. Time went on,it got easier. Till one day I realized I was looking forward to watching more. Without me even knowing it my fear is half of what it used to be. And it's getting better. So ,thank you for everything. Your literally helping me more than you'll ever know. Sounds crazy but it was getting so bad that I had to hire a dog walker ,and I would wear boots, long sleeves, spray the yard constantly and pest control was always on speed dial. Now, I'm not sure how I would handle seeing the ants and their mansions in person but before I wouldn't even consider it. Sorry for the long post and I wish I could return the favor one day. Th
Christie Craft Oh poor you, a similar thing happened to me, except I woke up having literally a hundred spiders wrapping me up in a giant funnel of web. My grandparents had to bath me with gas and lit me on fire. That was two years ago, and until now, I haven't recovered. I literally have to sleep under a shower so I can stay wet all the time.
Christie Craft. I was playing in the yard one day with only underwear because it was a good sunny day so sat down and there was ants in my pants they bit me everywhere so it was horrible and fear creepy crawlies
Never understood why they put ants with one of the most potent stings (of ants, that is) in North America in ant farms for children. Also, you might want to look out for stinging ants if you had a severe reaction to a Pogonomyrmerex sting .
Dark knights, fire nation, mites, and golden empire the four colonies lived in harmomy until the mites attacked, only the lemon can master all four elements
From what I know about mites in BeeKeeping, they are parasitic. We also noticed increase in deaths by the bodies piled in front of the hive. We noticed the mites and got treatment for them. After that they were back to buzzing and being energetic. I know that when bees are sick with anything we do add supplement to their water as well as treatment. Maybe see if there are "vitamins" of anything for ants that'll help keep them healthy?
15:30 Big bloody mite on that ant's leg. These were not good mites at all. I'm glad only 1% of people said to leave the mites. Entomology is cool and all, and it would be interesting to see a wild ant colony become a mite colony, but I'm glad you didn't let that happen. Ants are better than mites
I agree, See if it also changes their behavior. If no behavioral differences are spotted. Then you can conclude that the ants where attracted to the lemon because of the mites.
Oisin Ormond i agree because if miteless ants will congregate around the lemons as well (like in the tube at the end) then that proves they arent using it as a 'relief' but for the moisture/humidity or something
I legitimately felt scared when I saw all the mites in the beginning. It was like an actual horror movie! They were like little weird alien parasites, and it was like a scene from alien, and the scariest part was, the ants seemed oblivious! I better get some popcorn! This is gonna be good!
AntsCanada thank you for replying! Good luck with all of your ants! And by the way, at 15:30 I happened to notice a red little thing on an ant. I hope it wasn't anything dangerous. Ants Canada I don't know about you, but I think you should check out that part of the video just in case! And really have a great time with your ants! I just love watching how cool they are!
Is it just me, or are there mites crawling inside the lemon? At 10:46 , you can see little insects inside the lemon slices moving around. As he didn't mention anything, I got quite curious. :L
If the Golden Empire of the tropical species and can survive water you can drown off the mites by putting large amounts of lemon juice on the Golden Empire (Also change water test tubes and clean other tubes)
Do you think the ants were in the tubes with the lemon because they were covering the tube with lemon juice so the mites would be repelled? I don't know if they are that smart, but if they are smart enough to drag there food on the lemon to keep it from the mites, it makes sense that they would be smart enough to cover the tubes in juice to repel the mites.
I didn't even think about that. I thought maybe it was because there's too much lemon in the overworld, like it was causing them a little discomfort somehow. I think you could be right though.
For the sake of antkeepers everywhere, I genuinely hope you find a way of getting rid of them mites, because that view of the tube with the mites in was damn right disgusting haha.
I would love to be able to tell you that two years from now you'll have to deal with the same issue again so that you are better prepared. Sorry to hear about the Hacienda del Dorado.
I suggest spreading the lemons around the entire world. From what I have read and what I can see in this video, the ants use the citric acid to kill excessive mites. they were congregating In the tubes to spread citric acid around there enclosure to kill mites. That is also why they were grooming each other - with the citric acid. I've read that some ants use the juice better but it seems like your ants like the slices for some reason. it seems to me that the mites will never go away being that they will most likely live in the garbage and left over food... however that might be a good thing and as long as the ants have a way of properly maintaining the mites, it should be a mutual relationship.
I would have started the video more dramatically like "As an ant keeper, one of the main aspects is to not let your ants escape. But sometimes you focus so much in them getting out, and forget about the things that could get in..." But I still love your videos. ANT LOVE FOREVER!!!🐜🐜🐜
The reason for using the lemon slices is pretty simple but ineffective its the chsnge in ph levels and they can be kinda lethal to small creatures the ants and the mites are both affected by the ph difference but the mites are smaller therefore cant handle it as well but i would suggest that you would make somekinda formula that you can spray and it has to be fine mist and to apply it to as many as you can it should it should be applied to the out world and you could also make some pads soaked in the stuff so that the ants who walk on it might lose the smaller mites from their legs but the formula should be still really mild so it would not affect the ants. But what my point was that you should prolly give them a lemon slice as a part of their diet to help prevent the mites and help in this kind of situations but it might not help if you had had some more dangerous mites it will help prevent even the worse mites but it might not stop an wide spread infection of the worse kind of mites. Btw while there arent almost any kind of information on ant parasites i suggest you read about parasites in general.(Even if the mites might not be dangerous to the colony at this point they might seriously harm them in the long run cause if the trash isnt enough to feed the mites if they even live of the trash they will start to hurt the ants at that point forward an to counter that you could try something that is not really that dangerous to the ants you could leave tiny bits of oak leaves on the ground for the mites to consume cause they will get poisoned by the oak leaves little by little and yes oak leaves contain tiny amount of poison the poison is really mild but you still need to be careful cause in parasite situations most of the things you do are dangerous for both parasites and the ants/carriers of the parasite)
oh i forgot to mention that you should be careful with the lemon slices too cause they might damage the chitin of the ants and might also cause deformation in the young cause the chitin might not harden properly causing it to become a bit warped so dont overuse the lemon
Im just a guy who has a lot of different interests like parasitology and i own few books about that too and while i know a lot about biology in general im more invested in Marine-biology and other exothermic creatures.
WeAreGRID What would make you think this is the case like at all? Did you miss the part where they were scared of it and wouldn't come near it when it was first introduced?
Stout Shako yeah because it imitates some pheremone. I'm no scientist i don't know what all pheremone they have but I do know some of them are acidic. it's either that or they know acid is good against the mites.
Though from your socialblade you seem to have had a big burst in subs and views, and it's kinda ended now, I'd like to say that your videos are still very enjoyable, and I'm glad this video got recommended to me.
I know basically nothing about ants, but you make the facts about them and the parasites really easy to understand, and you make me actually worry about the ants. I would have never expected videos about ants to be so interesting and enjoyable.
I think the lemon therapy is working. The tubes look cleaner too. I think the mites are bad too, because before you did the lemon therapy, they weren't even interested in their food, and after, they're eating their food ON the lemon.
AntsCanada I know someone who had both mites good and bad in the same thank it half the ant conoly died but had survived he know the rest would get infested but I showed him the lemon method( from your video) and I saved the queen and the remaining ants.He says thank you for doing this experiment and risking the golden empires life💜💙🐜🐜🐜
Long live the Golden Empire and its Ruler Queen Ant. I say keep up with the lemon treatment and possibly try speaking with a biologist or finding someone who knows more about mites to decide if you should stop or not. and could you possibly consider my name i commented for the trap Jaw queen ant Springtrap Colony
Mikey bustos a.k.a / @@AntsCanada himself is cool! I only know him for his parody videos, didn't expect that he owns a channel like this. I'm so happy for finding this
did the ants realize that the lemon make their blood too acidic so the mites died out pretty quick?...you should make a how to care guide for peeps with mites alone cause thats a pretty cool discovery xxx edit wonder what else we will discover x
Haha, AntsCanada, you made me respect ants even more! I would like to join the AC family, so I'll confess something. Once, on vacation, there was this huge ant nest. I didn't really like ants by that time, so I made a "death potion" that included water, dirt, leaves, twigs, stones, and a dead snail. I mixed it up and drowned the ant nest in it. Now I'm really sorry for what I did. Now I like insects a bit more, specially ants and now I have a pet fly called Draco. I was thinking on what to name him, I thought Hoppy, but it seems he didn't like it. So I said Draco and he twisted around. Now when I lay on my bed he comes and stays on my knee, usually flying to my hand when I ask him to. gUYS I TAMED A FLY
+Francisco Fuentes I believe that it's poisonous to the mites, & not to the ants because they're much bigger, just like how dogs can't eat chocolate without getting sick, but we have to eat a ton (Literally a Ton.) of chocolate to get poisoned by it. I wouldn't think it would be because of weakening their exoskeletons the ants & mites both use the same material to make their exoskeletons, which it called Chitin (kī•tin).
Changing the pH of the body has effects on most animals, since the mites are small they are more sensitive to the change in the pH. That is my guess, although its pure speculation
Yes, this is true. Noted! I must think about the safety of neighbouring colonies! To the east is the Dark Knights and they would be the first under threat if the mites did decide to invade.
inFamousxable thats how it all starts... at first you are just skimming through a see the video. then you accidentally watch the whole thing. then you repeat that steps a few more times. then you join the AC family.
A mite infestation almost wiped out my feeder cockroach colony (over 800k roaches and lots of love almost lost). I got a hint from some herpatologist that most parasitic mites drink blood so if there's a sudden change in acidity in the host blood it can cause the parasite to die. We used limes to wipe out our infestation. Also it could help to freeze your feeders to kill them instead so you also kill any mites on them and be careful with potatoes since they aren't cleaned as well as most produce and can bring some nasty things into your colony. Insecticide plastics are good to put around your colonies so no mites could ever just waltz in. Hope it goes well and good luck!
I didnt think ants would go near a slice of lemon because its so acidic...maybe thats what deters the mites? Also Lemon is packed with vitamin C which will be good for your ants . Happy New Year :)
The roaches he uses are probably feeder roaches, which are bred and grown in controlled environments where they can be fed special diets to provide more nutritional value to the colony.
The Golden Empire, You will not die to something tinier than you. Be strong and stay strong.

Big bloody mite on that ant's leg. These were not good mites at all. I'm glad only 1% of people said to leave the mites. Entomology is cool and all, and it would be interesting to see a wild ant colony become a mite colony, but I'm glad you didn't let that happen. Ants are better than mites
I hope the golden empire will live.

when there's an ant killer add before this video
LawVader lol
Oof
Irony haha
you should put lemons in the mite free ants and see if that changes their behavior
yes he should try that
I agree, See if it also changes their behavior.
Heamolymph
That's a good idea actually.
You mite want to get rid of those
Nice one 😂👌
lol good pun

I legitimately felt scared when I saw all the mites in the beginning. It was like an actual horror movie! They were like little weird alien parasites, and it was like a scene from alien, and the scariest part was, the ants seemed oblivious! I better get some popcorn! This is gonna be good!
+Birdy eats a pea thanks for watching! The mites are indeed scary. The Golden Empire Saga continues.
+ Birdy eats a pea yeah I see it too
Is it just me, or are there mites crawling inside the lemon? At 10:46 , you can see little insects inside the lemon slices moving around. As he didn't mention anything, I got quite curious. :L
Tommy Luong yeah I seen too
It's was the Mits I have a ant colony
Tommy Luong y
Mites aren't insects, they're arachnids.
You are correct, those have to be mites because one of them moved exposed to the camera.
The ants think the lemon juice is a fancy sauce for their meal.

Came back to this videos 2 years later just to suggest quarantining some ants to find out if the mites were a problem or not xD
They are eating the cockroach on the lemon because lemon makes everything taste better, duh.
I’m totally joking btw 😂😂
I think lemons make things taste better.... 😓
These ants are obviously all lemon addicts.
Wait I was thinking the same thing...
Lol
If the Golden Empire of the tropical species and can survive water you can drown off the mites by putting large amounts of lemon juice on the Golden Empire (Also change water test tubes and clean other tubes)
GG_Universe_GG You cant drown mites
Why not?
Christian Tanner they have hydrophobic shells so they kinda just float there.
Things that MITE out of your control

AntsCanada Thanks 😃 I am planning to get ants as well but how do you make those outworlds?
AntsCanada has many videos on outworlds and other information on antkeeping
*put name here * he Bought that
hearts of Paris kids yeah I saw the vids
Do you think the ants were in the tubes with the lemon because they were covering the tube with lemon juice so the mites would be repelled? I don't know if they are that smart, but if they are smart enough to drag there food on the lemon to keep it from the mites, it makes sense that they would be smart enough to cover the tubes in juice to repel the mites.
I didn't even think about that. I thought maybe it was because there's too much lemon in the overworld, like it was causing them a little discomfort somehow. I think you could be right though.
Lavender Clorox Bleach:Makes scence
Lavender Clorox Bleach No the lemon juices took over the ants brains and made them eat the tube together
lol
wouldnt they group up in another tube then? not the one connected to the more lemon?
Is anyone else aware on how much this guy works on his videos
The ants are the content here not the guy
I ^^
I think that you need to put lemon slices In all your ant terrarium so you help prevent the problem
Big brian
Your voice with all this is honestly relaxing i wish you would do a really long video on all of your ants
For the sake of antkeepers everywhere, I genuinely hope you find a way of getting rid of them mites, because that view of the tube with the mites in was damn right disgusting haha.
Thank you. Let's hope we can get rid of them! Ant love forever!
AntsCanada You, or your friend, should take a close-up of the ants, and compare bad and good mites.
The mites are making me itch.. Hopefully the golden kingdom gets better...

I would love to be able to tell you that two years from now you'll have to deal with the same issue again so that you are better prepared. Sorry to hear about the Hacienda del Dorado.
You edit this
Yup mites are proplem
I suggest spreading the lemons around the entire world. From what I have read and what I can see in this video, the ants use the citric acid to kill excessive mites. they were congregating In the tubes to spread citric acid around there enclosure to kill mites. That is also why they were grooming each other - with the citric acid. I've read that some ants use the juice better but it seems like your ants like the slices for some reason. it seems to me that the mites will never go away being that they will most likely live in the garbage and left over food... however that might be a good thing and as long as the ants have a way of properly maintaining the mites, it should be a mutual relationship.
Thanks for this feedback and advice! Taking notes!
Saw one worker, and knew it was over. Sad AC.
Good luck.
I haven't watched the video yet, isn't there some fruit that makes mites go away?
Ants Wisconsin liver first you watched it then u commented about lemon
Or at least the lemon part
Blood Fruit
Well, there are beneficial mites that eat those mites. Isolate the queen and flick off any mites you see on her with a toothpick

Biodiversity - The series hhhhhhhh i like your thinking
Biodiversity - The series It sounds more like heaven being attacked by the hordes of hell
Biodiversity - The series the ones that eat other mites Are called Laelapidae they helped me allot
I would have started the video more dramatically like
"As an ant keeper, one of the main aspects is to not let your ants escape. But sometimes you focus so much in them getting out, and forget about the things that could get in..."
But I still love your videos. ANT LOVE FOREVER!!!🐜🐜🐜
you should never stop the LEMONS!
why would you stop, lemons are great!
james jv44 when life gives you lemons
Kevin Named kill a mite army with them
The reason for using the lemon slices is pretty simple but ineffective its the chsnge in ph levels and they can be kinda lethal to small creatures the ants and the mites are both affected by the ph difference but the mites are smaller therefore cant handle it as well but i would suggest that you would make somekinda formula that you can spray and it has to be fine mist and to apply it to as many as you can it should it should be applied to the out world and you could also make some pads soaked in the stuff so that the ants who walk on it might lose the smaller mites from their legs but the formula should be still really mild so it would not affect the ants.
Arttu Salonen your comment needs to be an article , I'm commenting here so I can come back later to this comment .
+Arttu Salonen Really good info
What are you doing?
You should be a ant scientist
Not here commenting this great ant colony TH-cam :3333
Im just a guy who has a lot of different interests like parasitology and i own few books about that too and while i know a lot about biology in general im more invested in Marine-biology and other exothermic creatures.
It seems I'm the only one to do this but, when life gives you lemons....

Laurienator Yes it MITE have but those puns were were awesome
hahahahha
Found this channel yesterday. This is better than discovery channel
I stopped everything I was doing to watch this AGAIN
it's almost definitely that the ants are congregating around the lemon because the acids in the lemon smell like pheremone signals to the ants.
WeAreGRID probably the deadly to mites one

You can put ladybugs in the nest, ladybugs eat mites.
Abcawforgetit ants will eat the ladybugs
Actually, lady bugs eat a lot of insects smaller than them, so the ladybug might eat the ants, which is worse.
ladybugs only tend to eat vegetarian plant-dwelling mites, as they are both abundant and accessible. and yes, ants eat ladybugs...
Abcawforgetit And ants eat ladybugs.

WeLcOme tO mY ChAnEl i agree with drowning the mites
Now when I lay on my bed he comes and stays on my knee, usually flying to my hand when I ask him to. gUYS I TAMED A FLY
wtf, I mean, my mother had a pet raccoon, but a pet fly?
Martina Parodi I respect you
Martina Parodi lol
"A pet fly." Sorry to break your heart, but, flies die of old age REALLY fast. Having a single fly as a "pet" is kinda dumb (no offense
And flys cant be tamed dude. Neither can ants but the thing is, a fly wouldnt be able to understand human speech
Also maybe the lemon, melts the Mites, and not the ants cause their exoskeleton! It's just speculation though.
+Francisco Fuentes
I believe that it's poisonous to the mites, & not to the ants because they're much bigger, just like how dogs can't eat chocolate without getting sick, but we have to eat a ton (Literally a Ton.) of chocolate to get poisoned by it.
I wouldn't think it would be because of weakening their exoskeletons the ants & mites both use the same material to make their exoskeletons, which it called Chitin (kī•tin).
Oh. Cause I thought the acid would seep in the Mites armor killing it. Again just a thought :P
Changing the pH of the body has effects on most animals, since the mites are small they are more sensitive to the change in the pH. That is my guess, although its pure speculation
Golden empire, be strong!! You can defeat the mites!! I beleive in you ants canada and the golden empire!!
You should address the escaped mites. If they can get out of their setup surely they can get into another. Keep the others safe to.
Yes, this is true. Noted! I must think about the safety of neighbouring colonies! To the east is the Dark Knights and they would be the first under threat if the mites did decide to invade.
I suggest adding vaseline to all of the ends of the connecting tubes.
Wtf am I doing I don't even like ants and I watched all this video

What do you think they are?! Tigers?!
It’s great to watch his monologues improve overtime.
THE POWER OF THE LEMON COMPELLS YOU!!
the attack of lemons
vetleice 39 Lol😊That's how you do mite exorcism.😉
I didnt think ants would go near a slice of lemon because its so acidic...maybe thats what deters the mites?
Also Lemon is packed with vitamin C which will be good for your ants .

Joined the AC farm. Your videos are really entertaining to me.
+Tyler Rust Awesome!! Welcome to the AC Family! Ant love forever!
I think you should add more citrus like lime or grapefruit and roaches tend to be dirty so try to feed them clean foods
Like inspect them I think the term is called hymolimph if that's how insect blood is spelled
The roaches he uses are probably feeder roaches, which are bred and grown in controlled environments where they can be fed special diets to provide more nutritional value to the colony.
Unreal Productions oh thank you I didn't know that😋
