    As someone who works in eye care, this is 100% true! A little hack is if you find a frame you like, try it on in the store, ask if it’ll work for your prescription (IMPORTANT) then to just buy it online & then bring them in to have them measured to put your lenses in! It’s double to triple the price if you buy it in the store

    • @blixten2928
      @blixten2928 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      My local glasses-stores refused to fit lenses into frames they haven't sold themselves. So that's out. Bastards.

      @@sirjmo They are chains, and it's chain-store policy. The old privately-owned stores have just about disappeared (I've lost the only two I know in the last 5 years). They say, "We can't take responsibility for breaking your frames", they say. It's just rip-off time once you get the big monopolies in. (Sweden, this.)

    • @13Senko
      @13Senko ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok here's my two cents! So websites like zennioptical Is your best choice.Yes they do go by frames but sometimes the frames are usually ten dollars or less. And if you want to get transitions and things like that they charge for that. If you just want basic eyeglasses before you leave your eye doctor ask them for Your PD A k a your pupil distance and plug in your prescription and make sure it's correct. Then you can ask for all of the bells and whistles like polarizing lenses, transition lenses oil and waterproof, and the like. I was skeptic so my first pair from zinny optical cost me around five dollars but it was everything that I wanted. Then I started experimenting with rimless glasses. I never went back to regular frames. And there's always a black friday sale. And if you do buy reminisce they will give you the screwdriver nuts and bolts and things like that. Basically the amount I would pay for glasses add a regular store or even my pharmacy without prescription would be $500 up. If you do have insurance I would say get your free pair but also shop online for your everyday pair. I never had a problem with their glasses and they have a very good return policy.

    My dad complained about his glasses giving him a headache. He was popping out the lenses to demonstrate how cheaply made they were, when he jokingly said "what if my prescriptions were flipped"
    So... He holds up the lenses to the opposite eye and went silent. He was joking, but he was right. Using the lense for the opposite eye didn't give him a headache, and he could see.

      As someone who owns an optical, to be a bit more precise, there are plenty of non-luxottica options but the general population is not aware or interested in them. Our privately owned store used to sell non-luxottica glasses for $80 but our patients took their prescriptions to Lens Crafters or America's Best to buy "real" glasses. So we changed our strategy, sold more "$500" brand name glasses and more people started buying from us (in fact strangely enough we saw the biggest increase in sales from customers with Medicaid insurance and those on fixed income). So as cynical as "glasses are worth what people are willing to pay" might sound, as an owner of an optical I can tell you people rather pay $450 for a pair of Ray-Bans than pay $100 for the EXACT same frame made in the EXACT same facility but without the name on it.

      @@CalvinVance Except are they they exact same frame?
      I have vision insurance through my employer and it is not Luxottica, but I do have a prefered brand and it apparently is Luxottica. For almost all of my childhood and nearly a decade after that I used independent optometrists, they all sold out to the bigger office management companies. Looks like most of those were Luxottica, not my choice I was kind of forced into it. Since they can't remain loyal to me, and the quality of service dropped across the board when taken over by the big company, why should I be loyal to them. Now I go where my wallet, schedule, and style take me. Basically that means whoever has my preferred brand and can fit me into their schedule.
      I've almost exclusively worn Oakley wire frames for the last decade. It may be a luxottica brand now, but I like the fit, finish, and styles over everything else I find. They've also been more durable than other brand labels I've used over the years. I could put a new set of lenses in almost any Oakley frames I have and you wouldn't know they weren't new. Every other brand I've had in the past were barely fit to wear after a year. FWIW I've been a mechanic professionally for the last 18 years, and it's a hobby when I'm not at work. I wear my glasses for everything except showering and sleeping. The Oakleys saw the same abuse as every other pair.
      Now for my opening line. Where other label has the exact same frame? I've never seen matching frames with any other label on them.

    • @CalvinVance

      @@Turk_85 if memory serves I once owned a pair of Ray-Bans that I got on discount pricing for $200. Later learned from a Capri rep they sell the same frame for $20. Made in the same factory. I couldn't believe it until he showed it to me and it looked and felt EXACTLY like my Ray-Bans.
      That's not to say there is a no name version for every brand or model (I am unaware of any no-name versions of Oakley, and Oakley definitely are NICE). And That's not to say cheap knock offs don't exist. I've seen my fair share of knockoffs but they look and feel slightly off, and as knock offs they pretend to be Ray-Bans but they aren't (the logo is slightly off). These frames weren't pretending to be anything. There was no logo. It was simply the exact same frame without the name on it.
      Name brand also tends to have better customer service (that is to say if my customer breaks a name brand frame I just call up the brand and they send me a new one at no charge). So there are some pros to going name brand. But you absolutely don't have to spend $500 on a good pair of glasses if you don't want to.

      Ya but that is actually true... It isn't a bad thing it is literally how value is determined. The issue here isn't the price it is the total lack of competition, and that is caused by the insane government regulations on the manufacturing process insuring competition doesn't arise. Capitalism doesn't create monopolies, over regulation does.
      Iso standards plus consumer product safety commission, ftc regulations, fda regulations, animal and plant health inspection service regulations, over the counter medical product sales regulations, magnification limitations, regulations on shape and size of frames, licenses must be purchased for manufacturing of a medical device., ANSI compliance, reading glass standard compliance ,reflectiveness compliance, American standards testing and measures compliance on a ton of factors, international sunglass and reading standard compliance, wto membership. Over-regulation nor capitalism creates monopolies. Businesses, wealth, effort, and market forces create monopolies. They don’t spontaneously occur because of regulation; they’re built for the purpose of profit, to maintain control of profit, without regard for balance in the economy.
      Price point, particularly for essentials, should be based on expense and end-user-value rather than using market thresholds - in fact once you have a sufficient level of market control and resources they can set market thresholds and exploit it to provide less and less value with a greater profit margin.
      Competition did exist but were bought/squeezed out by the monopoly, or not allowed to rise because the big company is participating in anti-competitive behaviors to crowd out any other competition by vertical market integration, hostile buyouts, and multi-brand flooding. Over-consolidation of wealth (as resources and market influence) in a competitive market is a far bigger problem than restrictive or expensive regulations, but good regulation is required to prevent or remedy the issue of consolidation in order to maintain a supply-demand cost balance.
      Fun fact, Luxottica is an Italian company (though obviously international). USA regulation is hardly the biggest factor regarding its monopoly.

    • @Cyril29a
      @Cyril29a 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hayuseen6683 "should be based on expense and end-user-value rather than using market thresholds" Why?
      "Competition did exist but were bought/squeezed out by the monopoly" This happened because of regulations not because of "monopoly" . That sentence doesn't even make sense... "The monopoly emerged because of monopoly"??? Ridiculous. Monopolies emerge because of regulations diminishing competition. Why do we have $30 smart phones but glasses are expensive? Because tech is new and the government hasn't had a chance to regulate it to death, they're working on it. Glasses on the other hand...
      In case anyone was wondering why Luxottica is such a monopoly look no further than the absolutely insane number of regulations and compliances one must adhere to in order to manufacture and sell sunglasses and frames. If capitalism caused monopolies we would only have one restaurant. No government regulations that hinder competition cause monopolies. Here is just a quick rundown on compliance for glasses.
Oh and Australia has its own slightly varied set of standards.
      So ya these guys have the process on lock, and probably sit on all sorts of boards where they can easily change what the regulations demand to hinder competition further. You want cheap glasses? get the government out of the way and people will make good cheap glasses. Luxottica, is not a capitalist enterprise it is essentially a socialist one. It has used government regulations to seize the means of production, which is what regulations do...

    • @CalvinVance
      @CalvinVance ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi, optometrist here. It is true that progressive lenses increase the price by a lot. They are a bit more complex than "just bifocals with the line shaved off" so you're going to pay for the expertise to fit and craft one and the R&D that goes into designing them. Even so, there are much more economical options than the ones sold at LensCrafters that are available. Supposedly they are not as good, but anecdotally my patients actually complain about vision in the "cheap" progressives less than they complain when they get the "high end" progressive. So $120 give or take seems about right for a cheaper set of progressive lenses. Personally I'd just get lined bifocals if I wanted to save money but the stigma around them being for old people drives a lot of customers to pay an extra $100 to $200 to get the progressive lens. As I mentioned in another comment, part of why glasses are so expensive is because social pressures make the majority of us feel like we need to buy name brand products. My patients even want their photochromic lenses to be a name brand (there are less expensive alternatives to Transition but my patients don't want it and even accuse us of selling them knock offs because of it so we removed it from our catalog). You could even get a good price at a brick and mortar location if you're willing to settle for a non name brand option. The only reason we mostly stock and sell $500 stuff is because people mostly want the $500 stuff.
      Also, having astigmatism does not change the price of the lens, but having a high prescription or a severe degree of astigmatism can.

      Unfortionetly this is where the worlds is heading with most things. Soon there will be just a few corporations controlling everything. They already put Politicians in power like when Dick Cheney was put as Vice President basically to represent Halliburtons intertests. Even passed laws like "Halliburton loophole" during his period. Soon a few corporations will control crops/food, media, communications, retail industry, pharmaceutical products, our credits (as they slowly phase out the use of money bills), probably even clean drinking water. It's already that way just that now most fields are divided between at least a couple of corporations but the bigger ones soon consumes the smaller ones until there is only one left in each field of business. Big Brother is not the government but corporations. Just look at Apple, Microsoft and Google and how their services and platforms monitor all we do while using their operating systems/platforms like iOS, Win10, Android etc. Down to every keystroke we make. Governments are only puppets for the corporations these days.

    As someone who's had to wear pretty strong prescription glasses my whole life this is old news. Similar to insulin prices, I think it's extremely obvious to the people who actually have to use these products that it's a disgusting price-gouging monopoly. It makes no logical sense that the prices keep skyrocketing despite the product being virtually unchanged, and we're not dumb, we know, we just literally don't have other options.

    • @philipmcniel4908
      @philipmcniel4908 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the situation with insulin is worse because there literally aren't other options (and because the government actively protects the oligopoly with IMO a misapplication of patent law). With glasses, at least there are pairs you can get from Wal-Mart or Zenni for a lot more reasonable price.

      Because they are not inhibiting other companies from entering the market. You can be the only company in an area if no one else wants to be there. Example:
      Little Suzy has a lemonade stand, the only one for a mile. She charges $5 dollar for a tiny glass of lemonade.
      People might think she is a monopoly because you can only buy from her. But you can and do set up a stand across the street and charge $2 dollars. Now if she beats you up and forces you to leave she is acting as a monopoly but as long as other people can come and open a stand near her she not a monopoly even if she is the only one who does.

    $50, two pairs, top notch lenses and frames, all the customization you can pack into them, online, free shipping, Zenni Optical. Over two years old and still going strong. After seeing my doctor he sent me over to the glasses guy in his office to get my prescription printed. As a formality for my insurance he had to go through his sales pitch and show me the frames my insurance covered. I glanced at them and replied "No thanks". He was completely confused and tried to reassure me that my insurance wouldn't pay for anything else. I was like "yeah, I know". He said "well when you change your mind... blah blah blah". Thanks to Zenni, I never did, not even when I decided to get prescription sunglasses too!

    Zennioptical is super cheap just ask your doc for the written perscription and order them. Like friggin 5 bucks for a decent pair. Not designer or anything, but if you don't care about that, or just want back ups for your kids, it's a friggin life saver.

      another option for glasses that are NOT owned by Luxottica is getting a prescription from your optometrist, then going online, like getting a pair of zennis or eyebuydirect is good too. Much much cheaper than buying frames in-store
