Go for it! All it takes is a tray, glue, whatever base color you prefer, and junk. It's super easy, barely an inconvenience!
The perfect place for junk that you keep to put it on a scratch-build, but then skip. It may not have the right texture or shape for your terrain or model, but as long as it has one it should work here.

I'd either go grey for the under coat or black, white, and grey just give an idea what the paint may look like before its on the model.
Good idea! I just went with black because that's what I had on hand, but grey or even white would also work, depending on which one uses most often as a base layer.

I am looking to create one of these. One question though is once it's covered in paint do you just re prime it to make it a clean slate again?
Good question! I haven't yet, but that was my plan when it got covered in paint. I've got some good black spray primers from Army Painter and Vallejo Mecha Color, but a can of Rust-Oleum from your local hardware store should work fine too.
If you can drybrush it you can slap chop it, so why "waste" a mini for testing, if you can test in one of those?

This is awesome! How do you clean it? Let's say after a few different models you want to take it back to the black do you just prime it again or soak and scrub?
Thanks! And yes, I just spray prime it black again and it's good as new.
I've been toying with the idea of putting bits of broken and unwanted prints in the resin vat with a little resin in the bottom, exposing the whole "plate" for 30 seconds, and peeling it out (just like how you "clean" your resin without using a filter) - removes contaminants and creates a palette all at once
That sounds like a wonderful idea! I'm all about using what would otherwise be trash for constructive purposes.
A demonstration would be great. Do you feel the sides of the Dyso container are a little high and somewhat limiting? Just wondering. Looks like a great idea for getting the brush just right!
Can do on the demonstration! I haven't had an issue with the height of the Daiso container, but I can see how it might be a problem if the brush being used has short bristles. The good news is that you can make a palette like this out of junk and basically any tray that's more than about 1cm tall.

I'll see about making another but really, all I did was coat the bottom of the Daiso container with white glue, dumped in some sand, placed random spare parts here and there, then airbrushed it black once the glue had dried.
You said your first one wasn't too great, what happened with it? Like why didn't you like it?
The glue didn't stick to the tray very well, so it separated and broke apart the first time I used it. Thankfully, the second try worked just fine. In retrospect, I'd rough up the tray with some coarse sandpaper, give it a bit of tooth for the glue to adhere to.
Make it bigger?
You certainly can, however big or small you need. I don't do a whole lot of dry brushing so a small one suited me, but if you do a lot of dry brushing, a bigger one would be handy. Use whatever size tray makes sense for what you do.
But everytime you load up the pallet now you have to spray paint it black again? And that build up of paint layers will not be an issue? Really?
Buildup hasn't really been an issue since I mainly just use it to see if I've got the right amount of paint on the dry brush, and all that takes is a couple swipes. I actually haven't bothered to respray it since it still has plenty of black surface area.
