........I absolutely love this......your talking my language here Ed........nitrogen....calcium....magnesium.....potassium.....mobile and immobile nutrients.....all are vital to a orchids well being......tiny amounts all the time.....Everytime it would rain.... they would get a bit of food flushed down to them.......Unlike soil roots, which have more of a wicking ability......orchid roots cant pull moisture from even a 1/8" away.....they can only absorb what moisture and nutrients are actually touching the roots......so soaking them for 20 min... allows them to feed more completely.........such a smile you gave me my friend!
Good morning my friend and thank you for your comment. I'm trying to base my growing principles on your way of thinking .....it makes sense for me because i'm getting a bit too old for repotting every year........my thanks go to you my dear friend for offering me, and all the other channels on you tube, the benefits of your considerable knowledge. I'm one of those old timer growers who hasn't come up to date but I'm changing my ideas and crossing my fingers that all will prove positive.......hope you and your wife are well and enjoying your orchids again.... Thanks and take care, Ed.
@@EdsOrchids Your old time growing clearly can and does work fantastic as does Rick's newer style. It is amazing to have Rick back and i'm excited to watch you learn and experiment with Rick's methods. You two are my favorite channels and do a great service for new growers like myself.
That’s a huge help Ed. The instructions on these products give you large amounts of the product when a pinch is obviously enough.. I have a much better idea of feeding now. Thank you.
Good afternoon Gwen. I keep on about calcium for the simple reason is that your plants wont grow without it and a few commercial foods for orchids don't include calcium.......just a thought!! Try a good look at Rick.L orchids.....take care and have a good week ahead, Ed.
Great video Ed! Thats very interesting you are mixing up your own fert opposed to using an MSU-type mix. Allows for more control. Seeing your, Rick L, Hillbillyorchids, etc. videos has tempted me to start making videos on my growing experience as a beginner. Could be useful for people to watch a novice and the many mistakes I'll surely make.
That's brilliant Stwinky.....I look forward to viewing your first video If you follow my friend Rick you wont make many mistakes.......I'll be more than pleased to give you a subscription.......thank you and take care, Ed.
This is a great video, Ed! Just shows you how different products can be. My kelp product doesn’t change the TDS much, but drops the pH pretty drastically in my water mix, and I add anywhere from 3-5 drops total from my pipette per gallon. Interesting!
Thank you Lori. I never thought that the kelp lowered the pH.......I thought that I had thought of everything. It just goes to show that there is always someone who can make you think again about your particular culture system. Thanks Lori and take care, Ed.
No I haven't used aquarium water Wayne mainly because the tds gets pretty high if you feed the fish well and it's unsure what the tds will contain.....thanks for asking wayne the fish are OK.......take care, Ed.
Great, instructive video Ed, have you noticed a difference yet with your plants and growth, with the lava rock repots and your fertilizer approach? Is your weather turned to spring warmth yet? Thanks Ed.
Hi Rea. It's a little early to tell but I think there is some improvement in the root growth. No warm weather here Rea last year the weather was cold until June!!! Ed.
Thanks Tina. I think you've had more of the storm than we have had.....it's quite warm out of the icy wind though.....let's hope we get some better weather before too long.....take care, Ed.
Good morning my friend. Yes I've got to the stage where I don't feel able to carry on repotting with renewable material My good friend Rick has convinced me that his way will make the things I don't like doing much easier in the long run without the trouble of repotting plants every year. Thank you Libby....hope you are keeping well.....and looking forward to your next video!!......take care, Ed.
you are right tess......I am sticking to it until it proves negatives. I'm expecting some of my plants not to react favourably but the ones which adapt to the new compost will stay in the media until they outgrow the pot. Riks advice makes good common sense for ease of culture.......take care and enjoy the rain!!!! Ed.
Good afternoon Richard. Hopefully your orchids are doing very well....so mine should follow in the same way......thanks Richard....have a good week ahead, Ed
