Just finished watching the entire documentary. Wow what a awesome story. What a fantastic collection. Definitely worth watching if your into collecting. Moral of the story don't let material things stand in the way of family. Family is forever not collectibles.
I love that he wanted to save the comics and not just sell to the highest bidder. I am not even a comic fan at all really but I appreciate the preservation of art. Most ideally, they should be digitized and then put in a museum for everyone to see.

I appreciate your sentiment about sharing the comic books, but most of the comic books in his collection - especially any books featuring well-known characters such as Superman, The Avengers, etc. - have long since been available to new audiences via reprints and/or digital editions. There's no need whatsoever for the family to do that. For rare books that are graded and such, they'll likely never be directly handled again; their value comes from their scarcity and historical importance. My suggestion for anyone who wants to experience the power of those comics and stories is to visit their local comic-book store. All of those decades worth of work lives on and is readily available for those who have interest.

I think you'll see the series goes way past the "hook" and deep into the reason why we love comic books and the real stories of people affected by collecting in both positive and negative ways. I totally agree with you, that the money is just one aspect of value and we'd all be smart to look deeper at what we give meaning too - ie the story, the art, the nostalgia, the friendships, the morals of the heroes etc... It's a dilemna worth winning tho. Sell some. Ease your lives. To the right people/ gallery? Museum? Studio? Celeb? who will preserve and display etc. Others keep yourselves. Win Win. It can be done. Hard to be impassive-- but stay as neutral as possible. Even voting on certain issues if necessary. I had a 45 year? trove of my own to work through.

This exactly what I thought when I first heard of it. They completely misunderstood the person and left him to die alone and are now reaping money from selling his possessions. Dick move ppl.
Couldn’t be farther from the truth. That said, I understand how it could seem that way. But the series goes really in depth about it all. It’s complex. Like life is.
You don't understand the dynamics of the family, then. Imagine being ignored by your father or husband in lieu of a hobby. I saw this happen to a neighbor whose father loved his two cars more than his family. His classic cars were worth a lot of money, and the family sold them after he died. The son hated the cars because they were loved more than he ever was. I believe this is similar to this family's situation.

He wasn't shit enough to not leave then anything. I don't want to give them my view on this. This is a one sided hit piece on the man where we only will get to hear the negative stuff.

This kind of seems like an attempt to create a pedigree-style collection (special CGC label etc) to inflate the value of the books. Unlike many pedigrees, however, this collector wasn't buying the books as they were released out...he simply had a lot of $$$ to buy/store them. His family didn't understand his interest/obsession, it, and now he's gone they hope to sell them and make $$$. Apart from the impressive scale, is that really an unusual collector's story worthy of a special label (and premium)? I guess we'll see when this comes out.
@@SellingSuperman Well...IMO it actually turns out to be a pretty interesting (and well told) story - one that is likely to be compelling even to non-comic book fans. For what it is worth, I believe it does indeed merit the special label as much (or more) than many other cases I've seen.

I do want to say that we did have the film reviewed by mental health experts and by an ASD organization to get their approvals and to understand better some points of view. You know, so that we were blinded by our own perspectives. It gets more in depth in each episode, especially Ep4.
We'd love to hear your thoughts. The episodes are now on Apple, Amazon, Googleplay. And we did pass the whole series by some therapists and people that run ASD foundations. So i hope it resonates with you sir.

Actually there is so much humanity in this series. The love of community, the nostalgia, the reason we love sharing with each other... looking at whats really "valuable" and how we each decide what value is. So I wouldnt say it makes fans look like nutcases at all. It highlights the extremes we can go to, but tempers that with the grounded reality of the effects of our choices and values. Thanks Quince! appreciate the comment. And yeah, Bill Maher's thing was pretty ridiculous, maybe this film will help him see the layers and complexity of collecting and comics.

Not sure, we are talking around 2007 so another lifetime ago for me kind of. I knew I met him before but could not recall from where until when I was at the last Knights of Columbus deal while I was talking with a vendor he had walked right up and shook the hand of the vendor I was talking to right in the middle of our conversation, he walked right in front of me w/out acknowledging me with his back to me, shook the vendor's hand and he kept walking along like he owned the place. Does he run that con maybe?

Do you really need to show the world how awful your father was? And then proceed to make millions from selling his collection? Living up to your father's legacy right there. What is even the point of this documentary? Just settle it privately. Oh yeah. Duuuh. The MONEY! Disgusting.
I think its important to know that talking about issues and conditioning can all help the process of grieving and healing. Not just in the individual case, but for us all to look at what we value, where we spend time, and how it affects our loved ones. Thats my point of view as a filmmaker, that it helps to look and talk about things openly. And then on a fandom level its just really cool to share this journey of how you work with and sort through so many incredible comics. So... its not disgusting at all. Its quite courageous and you'll see that in the film. So I hope that helps you see the point of the film - to look at our values, to look at whats meaningful to us, and to look at how we might even view our own value. As usual, it's all about the money not the stories and art. The general public just doesn't understand.
I think you'll see the series goes way past the "hook" and deep into the reason why we love comic books and the real stories of people affected by collecting in both positive and negative ways. I totally agree with you, that the money is just one aspect of value and we'd all be smart to look deeper at what we give meaning too - ie the story, the art, the nostalgia, the friendships, the morals of the heroes etc... Couldn’t be farther from the truth. That said, I understand how it could seem that way. But the series goes really in depth about it all. It’s complex. Like life is.
You don't understand the dynamics of the family, then. Imagine being ignored by your father or husband in lieu of a hobby. I saw this happen to a neighbor whose father loved his two cars more than his family. His classic cars were worth a lot of money, and the family sold them after he died. The son hated the cars because they were loved more than he ever was. I believe this is similar to this family's situation.

This kind of seems like an attempt to create a pedigree-style collection (special CGC label etc) to inflate the value of the books. Unlike many pedigrees, however, this collector wasn't buying the books as they were released out...he simply had a lot of $$$ to buy/store them. His family didn't understand his interest/obsession, it, and now he's gone they hope to sell them and make $$$. Apart from the impressive scale, is that really an unusual collector's story worthy of a special label (and premium)? I guess we'll see when this comes out.

@@SellingSuperman Well...IMO it actually turns out to be a pretty interesting (and well told) story - one that is likely to be compelling even to non-comic book fans. For what it is worth, I believe it does indeed merit the special label as much (or more) than many other cases I've seen.

I do want to say that we did have the film reviewed by mental health experts and by an ASD organization to get their approvals and to understand better some points of view. You know, so that we were blinded by our own perspectives. It gets more in depth in each episode, especially Ep4.

Actually there is so much humanity in this series. The love of community, the nostalgia, the reason we love sharing with each other... looking at whats really "valuable" and how we each decide what value is. So I wouldnt say it makes fans look like nutcases at all. It highlights the extremes we can go to, but tempers that with the grounded reality of the effects of our choices and values. Thanks Quince! appreciate the comment. And yeah, Bill Maher's thing was pretty ridiculous, maybe this film will help him see the layers and complexity of collecting and comics.

@@SellingSuperman I dont know him, we had met, I think he had interviewed me and I ended up going with another job -I think! Not sure, we are talking around 2007 so another lifetime ago for me kind of. I knew I met him before but could not recall from where until when I was at the last Knights of Columbus deal while I was talking with a vendor he had walked right up and shook the hand of the vendor I was talking to right in the middle of our conversation, he walked right in front of me w/out acknowledging me with his back to me, shook the vendor's hand and he kept walking along like he owned the place. Does he run that con maybe?
@@SellingSuperman No thanks, I did not have a very good impression having him interrupting our conversation walking directly in front of me being that dismissive just to shake each vendor's hand like he owned the Knights of Columbus con last Aug, and I was just someone there in his way.

Do you really need to show the world how awful your father was? And then proceed to make millions from selling his collection? Living up to your father's legacy right there. What is even the point of this documentary? Just settle it privately. Oh yeah. Duuuh. The MONEY! Disgusting.
I think its important to know that talking about issues and conditioning can all help the process of grieving and healing. Not just in the individual case, but for us all to look at what we value, where we spend time, and how it affects our loved ones. Thats my point of view as a filmmaker, that it helps to look and talk about things openly. And then on a fandom level its just really cool to share this journey of how you work with and sort through so many incredible comics. So... its not disgusting at all. Its quite courageous and you'll see that in the film. So I hope that helps you see the point of the film - to look at our values, to look at whats meaningful to us, and to look at how we might even view our own value.
