@@mikechivy Its an interesting angle but flawed I think. With film you are effecivley cleaning it up for todays standards using tools to remove any noise and sharpen image. Effectively this would be like remastering a completed audio mix if we switched the analogy to audio. The Giles Martin mix uses Digital technology to pick apart flattened audio and then remix it. its unecessary in my opinion - BUT if it give the band a new audience then, in today moden pop dross; that can only be a good thing.
Strange how we all have a different perception on sound. Just to add my opinion on this thread, I absolutely love the new remix, it's the Pepper I've been waiting years for😊

It’s important to remember that this video is entirely subjective. I’m not saying he’s right or wrong. He’s very knowledgeable and informative. However not everyone has this guy’s equipment, or his particular room acoustics, and how he listens to this album, and any album in general, is not how another may listen. We all listen differently as we are all tuned a bit differently. This is why most of us don’t own identical equipment and/or brands. We all tend to differ.
Keep that in mind.
Toss in the fact that everyone is using their own preferred turntable & turntable cartridges and what you have left is an opinion that carries very limited weight. This applies to everyone, myself included. You and you alone are always the best judge.
As for this particular album…
I own the 2017 stereo version of Sgt. Peppers’s and it sounds outstanding on my kit. I’m very happy with it. I’m not one to own multiple pressings and/or mono versions of albums. My go-to is stereo.
But that’s just me.
The mono box set is the reference version of most if not all the Beatles albums. That's if you ok with mono. Since most of us are so used to the stereo versions, the mono might not appeal to everyone. There is more detail in the mono, no channel panning or reprocessed stereo. One example is Baby Your A Rich Man. Paul's bass roll off in the intro is unreal, sounds amazing. I'm sorry I didn't stockpile the mono box sets. In the years to come it will be the most sought after Beatles collection and no one expected that from a reissue set from 2009 to be the reference set. It sure beats buying heavily played original pressings that are way way overpriced.
The description should include a time-stamped list of each record mentioned, along with more details like the year since you didn’t mention all of them.

The 50th is the best sounding stereo copy IMO, the album needed a proper stereo mix, the stereo that George Martin did in 67 sounded incomplete IMO.

Totally agree. I don’t have a true original stereo pressing - I have an original UK mono and the 2017 remix - but have heard pbthal’s needledrop of the Sydney HiFi LP. It’s by far the best stereo version I’ve heard, TONS of bass!

pickoffking A VG++ sounding mono copy goes for about the same as a sealed mint 2014 mono. Sound quality wise, the 2014 LPs are definitive, but maybe best seeking out the whole box set. Do the math and you’ll see it’s probably worth saving up for the whole set instead of purchasing just one.
i have the og stereo and mono on parlaphone both in NM, i also have 2014 mono,,, the 2017 to me is good but its different,, when your used to playing the uk stero for 40 years its tough to say whiuch one is better ,,, i like them both the voices and the shimmer of the drums and guitars arent there on the 2017 and the bass seems to be jacked up on the 2017,, but sometimes that is a good thing,,, i guess it depends on the mood your in,,, but i agree with this guy on the og capitol Us pressings of pepper they all suck and are unlistenable

Great overview of my favourite album of all time! I have 2 vinyl versions, the 2014 mono as part of the mono boxset, and Giles 2017 (single disc album only) remix. I like to swap between the 2 as each bring their own benefits to me. The clarity on some of the remix is fantastic but agree the bass can be boomy in places. A little too much compression on the end of A Day In The Life takes away some of the impact of the final piano chord, but the clarity of, for example, the start of Lovely Rita, is great to hear.
But yeah, the mono kicks ass! :-)

Agreed.. In mono. It's stunning. In fact i play it 4 times a day when i can.. Mono, stereo, stereo left speaker, stereo right speaker. It's a well-spent day.
One mistake in your video: the 2012 stereo IS NOT remixed, but it is digitally sourced.
The EU pressings are cleaner than the US Rainbo. Still, not cut from tape. Not as compressed as the 2009 cd, in fact it's not compressed at all.
My favorite that you did not mention is the German Apple (ca 1973) cut from tape,
it's the most "un-futzed with, straight off the tape" sounding Pepper of the 23-25 diff pressings I have heard (including the UHQR).

I just paid a little over 250 bucks for a sealed copy of the 2014 mono release. I saw one go for about 230 on ebay. So I would say this is about what to expect and what these are going for now.

You don't have to seek out a black and yellow parlophone to get a first pressing of pepper. Early 70's sgt's use the same cuts (and sometimes a good re-cut) My copy is a 73' and it's really good for me!
Idc what he says, I LOVE the 2017 Remix of Sgt Pepper!!! It is easily the best stereo mix of the album, and the most bang for your buck!! But the Mono versions kick ass too! Lol
I agree ! New one, all over the place. Bass is distractingly loud on a few songs. Some parts jump out far too much in the mix.
I did review, a - b comparison, my mofi UHQR copy to my nimbus supercut copy and for what its worth both sound really good and pretty close. But if I had to pick one it would be the mofi UHQR over the nimbus supercut. To my ears and thru my system both had great bass however the mofi upper frequency's sounded a little more warmer. Still very clear but warmer.

I'm not an audiophile but I've been buying records since the days of Elvis, Ricky Nelson, The Everly Brothers, Sam Cooke....etc. And with the resurgence of vinyl, I've once again begun to buy vinyl records. One album I've purchased recently which I think is really terrific is Ryan Adams' new release, "Prisoner." Would be interested to hear your take on it.

I've got the original UK mono pressing but must admit I have never liked mono. Same with my copy of Rubber Soul. I just love the separation of stereo even if it wasn't the 'intended' way to listen.
To add, Syd Barrett and John Lennon dropping acid at points through this recording and Floyd's Piper sessions, who were next door at the time. Would be nice to get some film.

The Beatles in mono was reissued on CD in boxset form in 2009 (The same year they did the stereo remasters) They did Mono vinyl reissues in 2014 which are supposedly great, now out of print and expensive. I remember when they were released and am kicking myself for not buying at least a few of them.

You forgot to mention the 1982 Japanese red vinyl mono release. They released all their albums that year in a box set on red vinyl in mono. They sounds superb! These were on the Odeon label.

Haha, my mum has a first press Australian mono pressing on the original black and gold Parlaphone label. Pretty much did what you said people "didn't" do. It was hardly played and mint. She never liked it. But she was never a big Beatles fan, she preferred the Stones.
Sadly it was lost in 2000 when our house was sold and we moved. I loved "Beatles For Sale" as a kid, but Pepper was a bit weird for my 3 year old self. I remember listening to it when I was about 13 and liking it. Damn I wish mum still had those records. I was going to buy a mono re-issue just recently and discovered the thing is now $299 or so. Wish I knew about it earlier. Damn scalpers, piss me off. I will buy Beatles For Sale, wish it had the Aus cover here. With and For Sale had unique covers, mum had original mono With The Beatles as well and a bunch of EPs. I always preferred early Beatles, probably because that is what I know from when I was a kidvin the 80's.

Hi Mike thank you for some great reviews. Regarding Sgt Peppers I bought a stereo GN records (2016 reissue) in a shop here in Australia. GN Records aka the Gold Note Record Label from Italy. Have you ever heard of GN? On Discogs it says the release was blocked from sale in the marketplace? Seems strange because I bought this new from a real shop its limited edition 500 copies from the original master tape mastered by Flavio Lenzi. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I would suggest to wait for remixed stereo version. It is on its way, I believe. As for mono, there are a lot of flaws which sounds weird nowadays. Listen to `Taxman` and `I want to tell you` in mono to understand what I mean. As a whole mono catalogue sounds not bad, but there are a lot of differnces between different editions and you will never understand what is good and what is bad for you.
Good Day I'm in the market for a mono version of Sergeant Pepper's preferably on parlophone. Originals will cost me so I'm going for a reissue. You mentioned 2012 mono German version, I will take that into consideration. What I'd like to know is what's your take on a 2014 parlophone mono version that's the one that I am currently eyeing up?
I have an original 1967 mono Australian copy of Sgt Pepper on Parlophone (black & yellow label). It was cut using the original UK first pressing mono -1/-1 masters....and sounds fantastic.

The record store owner I purchased it from said they were imported from Canada. Not familiar with Canadian pressings. QUESTIONS? Any good in your opinion? Maybe better than the 2014 Stereo Remasters? It'll take me a few days to get it.

What's the name of the German company that pressed the 2014 mono record? I know I've heard it mentioned but I can't remember it.
Original US version sounded fine by me.....
and it didn't have the inner groove at the end of the album. I much prefer the silence after the long chord ending.

Thanks for reassuring my suspicions about Capitol Beatles pressings 😉. I've just ordered a copy of the original UK Parlophone mono pressing on Discogs for under 30€, apparently in "very good" shape according to the site. I hope it'll be worth it. Ever since I first heard the original mono mix of Sgt. Pepper's I was totally sold on 60's mono. It was a complete ear opener to me. The prices for the mono reissues were just too Utopian for my budget though. After all, I only want to buy a record, not a new car.
I just watched this 6 y.o video. What "brand new" mono is it that is so great? 2014 probably wouldn't be considered brand new in 2017. Can you or someone elaborate please? I have the 2014 mono box set so I am hoping you are referring the SPLHCB in that set. I also have a stereo German issue mid-70's that is great. I was hoping you were going to mention that too!

Agree with you 100%. Ive had many copies of that album, and I only held onto my 1st pressing Parlophone stereo, but the new 2014 mono copy is hands down the best. In fact, the entire Beatles mono box set is all probably the best sounding pressings. Great review.

Hi there. I unfortunately don’t ever listen with headphones. Also, the 2009 set was only released digitally on CD, which I very rarely listen to, so I can’t really say anything or give any kind of opinion. There’s plenty of forums and websites regarding the subject though. Good luck! 🎶✌️🔊

the 2014 reissues are a lot harder and expensive to find now. It'd be a lot easier/cheaper to find an original in vg+ shape than lay down something like $200 for the newer one.
The Australian mono originals and early re-issues are as good as the UK version. People forget that Australia used original UK mothers to make their record stampers. And they pressed far less copies so the quality remained quite strong. And the Australian LPs go for far less that the UK counterparts.
I know someone that has the Australian half speed and has reviewed it to many other versions. Surprisingly it is one of the best versions to get, but good luck trying to find one. EXTREMELY RARE.

I have an Australian first press (Black and Silver label), and it sounds amazing. Not in the best shape, but somehow found it in a Savers for cheap, and uses the UK plates

The Mono Pepper was released in 2014 and was a current release in 2017 when this video was filmed.

No. Actually, most new songs are a mostly mono with some stereo mix. Usually the core parts of a song (lead vocal, drums [snare/kick] and bass [though often a bit stronger on one channel than the other to give an off centre positioning]) are on both channels, with percussion, synthesizers, horns, etc split up.
Looks like the Beatles knew what they were talking about after all. lol

Would like a similar rundown of White Album pressings. Where do you stand on the 2018 remix ? Seems to be generally liked as an alternate experience to a good UK original. Not quite as drastic a departure as Sgt Pepper's stereo remix.
Correct The Beatles intended Sgt Pepper to be listened to in mono in the days when stereo was regarded as a gimmick - i loved the idea of stereo and waited years before i could afford a stereo system and leave mono far behind, saying that early albums in 1967 sounded very bright to be played on the record players of the day but were recut and remastered to suit the technology evolving over time until today where they needed a lot of work to sound suited to modern playback systems, though really reviews like this should be entitled "which pressing sounds the best on my system to my taste".

Great video as always. I'll stick with the new reissue as, 1) us youngsters don't have a lot of money to spend on vinyl, 2) I like the Beatles, but not as much as some other people, so I'll leave the mono for them to grab.

There is a Japan pirate CD / 1st Rate De-clicked Needle drop, sourced from a UHQR Mo-Fi. Available from jagamart dot com, complete with original art work. As of today (6-16-2017) they have it listed in their "On Sale Today" section. $29.95 sure beats $450.00 and up.

What is the Cat# of the German Mono pressing you are raving about? Can't find German 2014 Mono pressing on Discogs.
Since the release of 090909 I am still quite happy with my mono box and love it for all the pros and cons. Unfortunately, listening carefully with headphones and conducting comparative studies, I find more and more flaws. Although the packaging is beautiful, what, of course, is important, the 090909 sound obviously is not for audiophiles as it was advertised. Overall, the 090909 edition is far from the best. Let`s face it at last. How to get on with that? Easily. The best stereo for early albums can be found in US Capitol boxes 2004-2006 and UK stereo 1987 cd box (later albums). The best mono for early albums can be found in UK stereo 1987 cd box and EP cd 1992 box. Pepper, White Album, Revolver, Rubber Soul from 090909 mono box ain`t bad too. However, If I could buy newly made remixes in cheaper editions instead, I would ignore it altogether and saved some money.
The main reason I don’t regret buying a mono box is that I collect mini vinyl CDs. If not for this circumstance, it would be best to just download everything you need in mono and buy a new stereo. I don't think the remixed albums are perfect, they have a lot of absurdities and illogicals, but if you need to stop at something, this is the way.

I agree with you on all but one thing.... The mono mix pretty much sucks. It sounds like it was put together with spit and bubble gum. It has zero dimension and is dull sounding. The stereo version is an experience. That mix, in my opinion defines psychedelic!

I have only ever listened to Sgt Peppers on a capitol stereo copy (late 60s/early 70s probably) and the 2017 stereo. Let me tell you that was a night and day difference.

I bought the mono at the release date in 1967. Unfortunatly a few years later I was broke and had to sell most of my albums, including all my Parlophone Beatles, for a few pounds. I have been slowly replacing them as funds allow, but I could only afford the sterio copy of Pepper.

I have a German DMM from I think 86 and I love it (don’t have another reference bar the 1967 mono UK first press) its great music sounding wonderful in both very different versions. Would be excited to hear different versions. If anyone’s in Berlin bring them round! 😊

2014. all the titles in the Mono box were also sold individually, same pressing.
