    Brilliant!
Replaced the plastic timing chain set in my 403 just a few days ago thinking the whole time “can’t wait to drop in an electric motor one day...”
Maybe a Tesla semi truck motor when they start showing up used in a few years???
Maybe axial motors will be a great back wheel drum/hub replacement for extra chooch??? Imagine that, 6-wheel drive.
    Keep us posted indeed!

@@motorhomerehabranch Ford sells an electric motor they use in their Ford Pickup. You are not going to put a Tesla motor in anything other than a Tesla. Tesla doesn't want you to, so they will make sure it is impossible. They will refuse to sell you parts. Tesla is not viable, but Ford could be.

We have what they all need to make an Electric Motorhome viable. You can't throw a brick through with electricity for very long. Motorhome's today are bricks. We are not. This is what it's all about, the time is now, we have everything we need. Email me at motorhomerehabranch@gmail.com so I can start a list! I added the email to the description of the video as well.

I love this idea and think it's a great next step. I'd go a step further and pull the engine altogether but turn (upgrade) the gennie into a range-extender (combined with panels on the roof maybe?). I suspect the CoD would improve too if it didn't need that full opening in the front.

Jim - Count me in. I've started an Electric Cobra and it would make a great Toad for my GMC. You have the molds, but what about the upper half? I have given converting to electric drive on my GMC a lot of thought, but it was after Manny redid all of the mechanics from stem to stern. I also spent $15,000 for a new engine. My best bet now is Hydrogen for my ICE.

Hey Jim, I think you could have a lot of fun and raise awareness for this by doing a fast paced 3 month proof of concept build. There is this this guy on youtube "Rich Rebuilds" that puts electric drives in all kind of vehichles using wrecked and used Tesla parts. Partnering with him would probably be good for both your channels and maybe you could do the complete build for under 100k instead of just buying the new parts. Something to consider anyway.

  • @AaronPaluzzi

    Hi Jim,
This has been a mental exercise for me for a while now. While everyone focuses on using tesla parts to achieve a conversion (with good reason, you can achieve excellent results with small components that are super overpriced) I was thinking this could be achieved for less if the owner is willing to accept a shorter range.
Not sure if everyone remembers the Smith electric trucks that staples purchased in the late 00's. These can be found for roughly $5000. They had a GVW of at least 16,000 and topped out at 26,000 depending on the model (more than enough for the GMC) and had a max range of over 100 miles as a giant box. Strip one of these vehicles for it's EV components and possibly more such as the seats, dash, steering wheel, hvac, etc, then reuse those in a GMC. The biggest engineering hurdle would be gearing on the motor to achieve more than the 50 MPH top speed of the Smith. The batteries used are valence lithium iron so not the most power dense, but they're group 27 size with a built in BMS making it a easier task to redesign the pack for motor home use.
I'm just guessing at this point, but as the weight of the vehicle is less, and you have a much more aerodynamic shape than a box truck you might be able to expect 120 miles range assuming the batteries are in good shape.
I'd love to be the guy to tackle this, but it'd be a few years before I'm able. These smith trucks seem to pop up most in Virginia and Florida so if you're a GMC owner in those states who has a blown engine this might be a viable alternative to a ICE engine swap.

With a published drag coefficient of 0.31, with a regular SUV being 0.41 the only way to even obtain such specs would be in a wind tunnel. Going and GM had a relationship and shared information. I'll see if I can further document their roll.
