Great video as usual Sam. As far as saving time in your splitting process, I saw a hack on a yt video where the guy had a County Line splitter and he limited the return travel on the wedge preventing it to fully return which did save some time each cycle. It does add up.
Sam you have a good setup with working in your building and out of the rain and sheltered from the wind. Maybe Santa will bring you a bigger tractor. Merry Christmas and thank you for your enjoyable videos.
Sam, I've been a Mechanic since 1970, and I own an auto repair shop in central Ohio. The old tire you showed in the video has uneven wear. From what I saw, I would lean toward an alignment. The suspension parts and ball joints will need to be checked. Now, the new tires need to be rotated regularly. If not, you will get cupping a problem all four-wheel drive trucks have. The cupping will be in the front tires. As for splitting wood, I want you to know that you are doing fine with what you are working with. I have been burning since the early 1980s. I like my rounds split on the larger side. The more minor wood burns too fast for me. I enjoy your videos, and I've been subscribed since your early days. I have caught every single video. It was interesting to watch your channel grow. Yes, I hit the like button every time.
@jamescarpentercountryliving Thank you so much! Viewers like yourself are priceless 🙏 I have the truck back in the shop and they're looking at it. I trust them which is a rare find nowadays. He was definitely saying the ball joints might be the issue. I only drive that truck around 2k miles per year, but I'll be sure to keep up on rotations. "What?!?! The tires rotate every time I drive it!" 😂
Good morning Sam. Having my coffee watching you work. Being retired, work fascinates me, I could watch it for hours. LOL. Just kidding buddy. I'm 70 years old but plenty busy. Wouldn't have it any other way. Anyway, thanks for another video. Take care, stay safe.
@elmermason9685 I love hearing that from those of you more advanced than me. I make decisions based on myself 10 years from now. "How can I still do this 10 years from now?" Is constantly repeating in my head. You are an inspiration, my friend 🤠👍
Hey sam just a suggestion. Build a 12x12 bin with palates in the corner of the barn. Fill the bin 8' high and let's sit until next year. You would have more volume of wood to use.😮 not so many totes.
Thank you! I have been trying to think of a bulk storage solution. Otherwise, I'm going to run out of room fast. I never thought of making it in the barn. Great suggestion!!! 🤠 👍
When I was selling firewood it all depends on the customer some wanted smaller some bigger and some would take a whole log for outside boilers that one learned from Chris in. The woodyard cause up here refered to as outside wood burner so Chris taught me something and been selling wood a long time but customers want bigger pieces say burn longer and less trips to feed stoves and others like little are smaller cause wife feeds during the day when working we sell mixed and hard woods and the bad looking pieces we either burn are give away after they bought a load of wood some fire pits camping they happy even tip me tell them it's free but they appreciate it but we be opened year round and a tree company so supply are own woods thanks for posting
I still think you should look for an excavator pallet fork for your under utilized machine. The versatility of that luppy would easily increase your ability to fill those bins. Maybe you could somehow adapt the ones on the tractor to the excavator? Love you videos never miss one. Do a count of the times a guy with an axe or maul handles his wood, it will make you look like Mr Efficiency!
Just a thought , a petrol powered log spliter inside . would it pay to have something to exhaust the fumes out side . eg a metal boot over muffler with pipe connected to outside
@johnricks1630 Haha! Actually I've been thinking about one of those fancy cabs with a windshield wiper. Prices are around $1,400. It may have to wait 🤠👍
As someone that splits in the dirt, without totes and stores outside on racks, I wish I had a set up as nice as yours. Inside out of the rain, snow, sunburns is great. Being able to keep wood dry as it seasons is a dream come true. Handling wood too much? Say what? Must be from people that either have processors and store it in a big pile or have it delivered and pay extra to have it stacked in just the right spot next to the stove LOL Seems to this old guy you have made it as painless as possible.
Isn't handling wood like going to the grocery store. In the cart, out of the cart on the conveyor, back into the cart, out of the cart to the vehicle, out of the car, and into the house. Then, you get to put everything away.
I knock off the edges giving me a big square “round”. The edge piece becomes kindling or if punky I toss into the woods. When he split it down the middle it didn’t split straight. With my method I get more square pieces.
@@peterfreeman3317 I like that! I'd love to have a big vertical splitter. I would definitely use your method with that. The knife on those pro splitters is so much bigger. It doesn't allow the split to wander the way mine does. 🤠👍
Quick question about your tractor. When you bought it, did it come with the quick attach on the loader arms or did you have a pin on type bucket? A lot of the sub compacts come with a pin on bucket as is my New Holland TZ25DA tractor. I'm in MD and not too far from Messicks in PA, so I'm wandering if they can change out the pin on bucket, switch it over to a quick attach so I can utilize more options on the front end. Might want to consider some eye protection. You'll get one of those rounds that's a fighter, keep the pressure on it and suddenly...pow, she blows apart and you've got wood shrapnel in your eyes. Take care brother!!
Why not move your log deck in the barn? Setup so as you buck each log the rounds can be put directly on the pallet stack that you feed the splitter from. Or eliminate that pallet deck and put the bucking station in it's place. Buck a log and feed the splitter from there.
Now that you are paying for gas are you thinking about a wood burner? It’s a great investment that will pay for itself eventually. I absolutely love mine and just the feeling that you get when the power bill comes and it is a quarter of what it was pre wood burner puts a huge smile on my face. Oh and if you haven’t tried Youngstown BBQ you’re really missing out. Take care
@ yeah Youngstown bbq is right by Boardman football field. I was figuring that you would heat the house with wood, of course you could get a OWB and have heat in both places with one fire lol

Look after stuff and it will pay you back. As for doing things wrong: One question….does it work? Answer…yes. No more questions.
Many many years ago I used to buy wood and I'd re-split it. Now i fell, cut and split about 45 rick (15 cords) a year and I do it the way I like too lol. I heat with wood only and use about 2 or 4 cord a year depending on type of wood and how cold it gets. I burn anything if it'll hold a flame and it's an indoor stove. I give a lot of wood every year to family, and elderly neighbors out here in the country who hard hard pressed economically. I'm kinda paying it forward, I'm 72 and at some point won't be able to do as much lol. I keep 3 to 4 years ahead, stacked and off the ground. If someone wants to buy a rick or 2, I'll sell it, but it's not why I do this and they gotta take what I have.
@travelswithbenny3328 Good man 👊 I started because we had a wood stove at our old house. We have gas now but my dad heats with wood and he's 87. I got the bug and I like selling it. I just want to be sure I can still do it 10+ years from now 🤠👍
@samsdoinstuff I'm all electric here and just don't like paying the electric company when I don't have too, which explains why I don't use AC in summer, in SW Missouri it gets well over a 100, but thats what windows and fans are for lol Besides I like cutting and splitting, keeps me in shape and cutting, splitting, stacking etc warms you up too without even burning. The kids think I'm crazy, but have admitted that it works for me.
That may have been me with the pallet suggestion. I’ve been suggesting that to content creators the past several months. It’s because I’m 6’6” and notice in a heartbeat when someone is bending over too much, 😅.
You've probably already done this but was interested in your pricing, based on amount, distance to deliver, etc. Do you charge a different rate based on the species of wood? Your dad surely isn't using all that scrap wood. Have you thought about selling it at a discount. Always look forward to your channel submissions.
Thank you! Right now I sell at $300/cord. I do not up-charge for different species...yet. I think that's reasonable for my area and the quality of wood I'm selling. I don't want to sell the ugly stuff because I don't what that type of word of mouth. My Dad burns most of it. He goes through about 4 cords a year. My brother gets the rest 🤠👍
Hi Sam, Just watching the way you use your totes for storing firewood and thinking that you have a lot of wasted space in each tote. I realize you are limited by your lift capacity (I have a BX too and understand). I was just wondering if it is possible to take a new-to-you tote and cut it right down the middle; base and all, and then use a few blocks of 4x4 on the bottom and the metal bars from the top to brace it across the bottom and top. Stack 1/6th cord in in each half. That would ruin the tote in the event you got a bigger tractor but would be a fun thing to try while you have your BX. All the best. Peter
Another thought. Use some of the sides that you cut out of your existing totes attach them to a pallet and make some more totes. So you would have a pallet on bottom and use three of the sides you cut from other totes with a bit of mechanic wire to tie them together and make a tote out of it. Sorry, just the way my brain works. Always trying to find ways to use what i have without spending a bunch. Have a great day. Peter
Just an idea here, I understand your loader can't lift a full tote but it just bugs me to see half tote full taking up the space of a full tote. I don't know if you have an unlimited supply of totes or not but what if you cut the top ring or two off the tote making the tote shorter, filling it with two rows of wood(same amount and weight as before) and then stacking those two or three high. I'm not trying to point out a problem, just offering a suggestion. Lol
Don't understand how you handle wood to much we split and have conveyor put on ground we sell a lot of wood year round you do it your way it suits you and keeps you safe you got a routine so keep doing it your way people comment just to say something but you happy with what you do all that matters thanks for posting
