Ted's story brought tears to my eyes, to think that Ted felt like he was doomed because of his blindness to just longing to be like everyone else. My heart goes out to him. My 4 year old grandson was recently diagnosed with childhood Apraxia of speech (CAS) it's devastating and he is too young right now to understand his diagnosis. I have been a viewer of CBS Sunday 🌄 Morning since Charles Kuralt kicked it off in 1978, and every Sunday, nowadays I hope that Steve Hartman will have another one of his beautiful stories to share. He finds the best ones, a true treasure of a man.
If someone could send this story to Steve Hartman for me that'd be great, I want his nephew to know of this man. His name was Jean Eyemere. He was a French immigrant, went blind in adulthood from Diabetes, and was a good friend of my family when my dad was a kid and his godfather. Here are a handful of things this guy did: 1. He was a skiier before he went blind. Did he let his blindness stop him from his favorite leisure activity? Nope! He would still ski world class slopes, with a sighted partner, of course, but still continued to ski on the same level he had before. 2. Put a new roof on his house himself. He joked that the only real difference was he had to hit the nail all the way in the first time as he wouldn't get a second try. 3. Lost his cane out in his feilds, my dad, his father, and Jean's 2 boys combed the land looking for it, unable to find it. Jean walked out to where he lost it, bent over, and picked it up. 4. Built his own cane out of spare parts and electrical conduit. 5. Gave a presentation on his home of Nice, France, and when someone lobbed a spitball at him, he was able to identify which student it was. Did I mention he was blind?
