Woodturning - The Hidden Beauty ( English Oak Burl )
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a english oak burl into a winged bowl. with a true hidden beauty.
when woodturning a piece like i find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.

Chips on the sides, salsa in the bowl. The perfect snack dish.

Really nice man, good to see some traditional woodturning, and not just a gallon of sparkly resin with a tiny piece of wood floating in it! That has its place, but so does this.

I think burr/burrl is the golden nugget for wood turning. There's something so beautiful about those little knots in the finish.

Thanks Valerie, the bead on top was meant to be a continuation of the bowl from below.. if I could do it over again I’d make the top section of the bowl much deeper to exaggerate that effect.

I love the bowl but I personally do not like bark left on. It would Harv been nice with a smalley flange. Beautiful wood

I usually have little or no imagination when it comes to this kind of woodwork. However I believe I would have left the Burl side of it untouched and carve out the underside to make the mushroom cap. Then I would locate a branch that would make a perfect stem plus a base and as a final touch wire it for a small light bulb so that it becomes a lamp. Had I the required skill and the same type of burl that is what I would do to it.
