As someone who's played both sports (League and Gridiron) for years - everytime I hear the word 'padding' from a fellow Aussie it makes me laugh. There's no padding. Its solid reinforced plastic with a bit of soft backing on body side so it doesn't scrape against you, and basically a motorbike helmet. I had more 'padding' in my Wayne Pearce Perseus shoulder pads in the late 80's ;) There are far more brutal collisions in Gridiron than league, especially nowadays with shoulder charges banned. Gridiron is a power and collision sport where every yard is vital since you only have 10 to work with for 4 tackles, and if they make that 10yards (9 and a bit metres) they get another set of 4 tackles. In League we have an entire field (100m) to play out 5 tackles and we kick on the last. Gridiron tackling is designed to hit/collide and stop any forward movement from the point of contact. But the funniest bit is - every year, after the first night of full contact with gear on, the number of blokes who don't turn up again is piss funny. They find out it's not all 'softness' and 'padding' and don't come back lol, we usually take bets on how many will suddenly get put on night shift or have to go away for work. Like clockwork, every year ;)
Hmm. For me a hospital pass was one where, as the recipient of the pass, you KNOW the hit is coming, you can SEE it coming but the ball is in midair to you and what can you do? You have to catch it. So a hospital pass is where your teammate has basically set you up to go to hospital.

This Wiki clip shows you which countries have Rugby League teams "The Rugby League World Cup is the highest form of representative rugby league. Countries that have contested are Australia, Cook Islands, England, Fiji, France, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Lebanon, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Tonga, US and Wales."
Shoulder pads were introduced into the NRL in the 1980s as a way to protect players from the increased physicality of the game. With harder tackles and high-impact collisions becoming more common, these pads were designed to absorb shock and shield areas like the shoulders and chest. They quickly gained popularity, particularly among forwards and players in high-contact roles, who benefitted from the added protection. By the 1990s, shoulder pads were widely used across the league, aligning with a period when the sport prioritized strength and physical dominance. However, as rugby league evolved, several factors led to the gradual decline in shoulder pad use. One was the improvement in player training and conditioning, which emphasized strength and injury prevention through fitness, reducing the need for added protective gear. Concerns over player safety and aggression also influenced this shift. Padded shoulders sometimes encouraged aggressive tackles, with players more likely to lead with the shoulder. Phasing out shoulder pads promoted safer tackling techniques, with fewer players using excessive force. Additionally, rule changes and a shift in play style placed greater emphasis on speed, agility, and skill over brute strength. As a result, the NRL saw an influx of smaller, faster, and more agile players who preferred a lighter, less restrictive uniform. Modern jerseys were designed to be close-fitting and lightweight, giving players greater freedom of movement without the bulk of shoulder padding. In summary, shoulder pads fell out of use in the NRL by the early 2000s due to changing game dynamics, an increased focus on safe play, and a player preference for agility and comfort. The game had moved beyond heavy-contact play, and as training and tackling techniques evolved, so too did the need for protective equipment like shoulder pads.
Rugby League is also played in England. The NRL took 4 teams to play in Las Vegas last March and are going again for the next few years. We call those last minute passes a "hospital pass". The head gear some players wear is soft and flexible.

Panthers have amazing team cohesion, offense and defense - not many weak spots there. I'm actually interested to see how the Panthers do in '25 with a few of their big names gone. I'm half and half about salary cap. In a way it keeps things interesting, though it does suck when your team is losing MVPs.
@@Erizedd Yes if they could have kept they're team together who knows how far they could have gone , I thought they were gone last year losing Creighton and Leniu but they did it again ! Luai going will be a bigger test ! But I'm going for a 5 in 25 ! 🤣
They are playing in las vagas for round 1 next year
They also did it this year
Rugby League is played in over 70 nations throughout the world.
Rugby (Union) is played in 133 nations
The catch and hit, we call a “hospital pass”. 😉
If they drop ball on the hit you know it hurt he ball carrier lol 😂🎉
Seeing how happy that made you was a pure pleasure oh and it's Rugby LEAGUE mate not just Rugby .
It's called "shoulder drop"when they tackle sometimes.
#4 " Steve Matai" Appeared often, I'm not too sure he played a game without putting a wicked on someone..
i love ur reaction as an aussie
Concussion is a big problem in Rugby League over the years unfortunately. But I love the game.
It's a big problem in all contact sports. I think the CTE first came to light in the NFL.
I’m Australian and every time I watch this he says happy arvo. ITS GOOD ARVO
Now you’re talking Ryan. The thing is that you’ll see action like this in EVERY game. Whereas afl highlights you’d need to watch dozens of games to collect t highlights.
This sport is t “rugby”. It’s rugby LEAGUE. two different sports. This is the fun sport. Evolved from rugby back in 1895. NFL did too by the way.
@@stevewren1079 if your “highlights” are hard collisions like the one in the video. Sure. Then a sport like soccer or basketball has no highlights at all.
No pads?? Because the NRL players are not wusses like your NFL players
They also don't hit eachother even close to as hard as NFL players. They aren't as big either. People would literally die every time an nfl game is played if they played without pads and helmets. Go watch a football video. This cute stuff doesn't compare.
@@xre1nx347an NFL player wouldn't last 5 minutes in an NRL match.
@@Darryl.M and an NRL player wouldn't last 5 minutes in an NFL game. The NFL is definitely a more skillful sport (depending on the position) but neither could just go to the other sport and perform well without practice and training.
@@xre1nx347There are many NRL and AFL players playing and have played NFL.
A NFL team did a trial against a NRL team in Australia 🇦🇺 years ago and the NFL players were shocked on how hard our game is!
Should go back to the 80’s when it was much rougher with high tackles, spear tackles and more!
The headgear that players wear actually doesn’t help with big hits it just helps with cuts and etc.
Also check out AFL hip and shoulder hits.... old and new footage, but worth a laugh 😂
That last hit looked like a WWE 'Sidewalk Slam'.
And, just an FYI, Rugby League was created from Rugby Union. Unlike American Football, You can only 'lateral' or pass the ball backwards. If you pass the ball forwards, you receive a penalty and loss of ball.
"it was a good thing this dude had his helmet onnn" lost me🤣 its called a headgear bro
we played this In primary school ,part of culture ,I played for Rivo primary we had several 1st graders graduate for our team
The tackle at 6:11 Wallezniak on Moylan, are former team mates at Penrith.
as a Aussie I am not surprised about this tackles
Head to Las Vegas in March, our first few games of the season for NRL are being played there.
This Wiki clip shows you which countries have Rugby League teams
"The Rugby League World Cup is the highest form of representative rugby league. Countries that have contested are Australia, Cook Islands, England, Fiji, France, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Lebanon, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Tonga, US and Wales."
You forgot Greece
You should watch the NRLW - the women's league. Those girls go in hard too
Rugby League is also played in England. The NRL took 4 teams to play in Las Vegas last March and are going again for the next few years. We call those last minute passes a "hospital pass". The head gear some players wear is soft and flexible.
nrl is the rugby league & its comp involves teams from Australia & New Zealand rugby league is played world wide RUGBY is a different game all together it started at the school RUGBY in Britain in1823
They are similar, League came from a Rugby Union split in 1895 and was originally the Northern Rugby Football Union and gradually the rules were amended to become Rugby League. The split was mostly to do with professionalism and Rugby Union wanting to stay amateur.
League is also played in England (popular in the North where the game really started). I remember France playing too, and watching them play the Western Suburbs Magpies in a warm up game for a test series against Australia back in the day.
It is the national game in Papua New Guinea who look like having a team in the NRL in the future.
@@perryschafer5996 Have ya heard any news on any other new clubs yet, mate?
@@HannibalLekta-qg2ip Not that I've heard of. They may have peaked for now.
It's was also created in the North of England. The NRL is the Southern Hemisphere league in the UK we play Super League
4:45 that’s a shoulder charge which is a illegal tackle in NRL I have been following the team called the Rabbitohs since I think 2011 which is the team in read and green yes I’m only 18 but it is really entertaining to watch especially when you are in one of the front rows of the grandstands 4:45
Australia, New Zealand ,United Kingdom ,South Africa, Fiji, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and a few other countries or islands play Rugby League! I think you will find there are teams in the U.S.A.!
This fascination with pads 😂😂 …must be that time of the month
They breed them tough Down Under. No pads or helmets. And the play 80 minutes
Look up Greg Inglis, one of the absolute best to play the code, his "dont argues" , step, speed, agility, brut force and post try celebrations were all mint. An all round entertainer of the game
Cleary is part of a team that's won 4 grand finals in a row, been to 5 grand finals. Grand finals are the equivalent of the super bowl
Nrl is actually a world game now, 26 countries play it and have a world cup too
No they dont. NRL is the name of the Australian competition much like NFL is an American competition . There is one non Australian team in the NRL and thats the New Zealand Warriors. Rugby league is the term for the world game.
@@MrAhuapai Thank you. These guys need to know the difference. Two completely separate games.
Watching Munster getting folded like a deck chair never gets old
Ryan - “You’ve gotta feel bad for them.”
Also Ryan - 😂🤣😂🤣😆
The good old hospital pass, I've been known to take advantage of a couple :)
When I played early 20s I was roof tiling and just naturally hard but I only weighed about 65kg, the 1 hit that gained me hell respect first kick off for the season I got the ball and just ran it, and got taken out by 2 big guys at 1 would have been over 100kg another close to, ppl couldn't believe I got back up but dam it rocked me 😂
You need to watch some State Of Origin Games….
Need to watch state of origin hits.
It's 2 states of Australia where you can have team mates playing against each other and the ref's are a bit more lenient on what happens as it's an Aussie grudge match
Mate. We have 2 codes in Australia. Rugby Union which is played around the World and was formed through Private Schools in England.
Rugby League was a Northern England poor man’s game. Which has evolved to being another contact footballing Australia reaching out to NZ, UK, France , South Sea Islands and beyond.. great game!!!!!!
As in Australia, Rugby, and Rugby League, are both played in Great Britain.
Remember they take those hits while running for 40 minutes each half, the endurance is overlooked.
as an aussie, these tackles look normal in the football
Steve Matai is one of the IF NOT the best hitman in the nrl and after he left his team mate George Taufua kept up the tradition as The Grim Reaper.
Some big hits yeah. You should check out the 80s and 90s before the rules toned everything down.
It's ok to be rough n' tough but beware...repeated head knocks will put you on the slippery side of loopy...
Some of them are big boys eh 🤣
Next up Ryan will be covering Lawn Bowls 😂
When you get passed the ball and get tackled immediately, we call that a hospital pass as that's were most of them feel like they should end up
That one you replayed was Steve Matai
