Games should establish their own lore, and then make fun of itself in its own way. It makes it timeless. Instead of making fun of "current events", that age like milk to people in 5+ years from then.
Fallout 2 is full of pop culture references from the 90s that aged like milk.

During development of this game, they put up a website asking anyone who had previously worked on the game to send in a message, as they figured that there were too many people to count.
I put my name in for a joke, along with two other unrelated people that I said I worked alongside.
All three names made it to the final credits.

@@trabuco9 i was playing it and diagonal strafing like Perfect Dark, makes you move faster than the enemy bullets and it has execute kills that needed much more work
@@nickm5419 Both this and Aliens Colonial Marines were outsourced to other developers by Gearbox while they focused solely on Borderlands.
Duke Nukem Forever never had a chance unlike Aliens Colonial Marines though, Gearbox and the outsourced devs simply polished up the latest build that they had from 3D Realms.

i waited 15 years for this game, pre-ordered it, paid $120 cdn for it and finished it the day i got it. it was a miserable, depressing experience that broke my brain so much that now i'm working on duke nukem forever. go play the duke nukem forever 2001 restoration project

Fun story: this game and the Balls of Steel boxed set became so worthless that during a Gamestop sale, I was able to buy the BoS box, and then return the game inside for more credit than the box had cost. Still have the Carpe Nukem bust on my shelf.
The saddest story I had seen was someone full price preordered 2001, and by the time "game" finally came out that gamestore had been bankrupt for several years.

I genuinely enjoyed this game, especially once I realized you can see various video game mechanics from over the years due to its prolonged development.

Gameplay wise it’s really not bad it can even be really fun. it’s just the horrendously outdated humor put into a story that’s seemingly meant to be taken seriously. Duke 3d was a parody of old action movies it worked for that. Duke forever tried to hard to make it work today and it fell flat on its face.

My dream version of Duke Nukem Forever takes place in the aftermath of Duke saving the world, so we're all super grateful and give him whatever he wants, but also he's this weirdo who speaks ENTIRELY IN QUOTES OF 80'S MOVIES DELIVERED IN ALL CAPS
Also, Duke would occasionally have an AI controlled soldier who's very normal and competent to act as the straight man, but the twist is he's gay, which Duke has never heard of before.

Duke Nukem Forever had the record for longest development cycle, but I think it recently got dethroned by the yet-unreleased "Beyond Good and Evil 2".
So it doesn't even have that "honor" going for it anymore.

Classic Duke lines were delivered so smoothly that even when he was quoting movies, he actually made them better, like Ash's "Hail to the king, baby." To go from that... to "Bazinga" in World Tour... what the hell are you doing gearbox

This probably isn't the sort of game you would play on this channel because it's actually good but I feel like you'd have a blast with ion fury. There's a secret where if you shoot the water cooler the water leaks into an electrical outlet and causes a huge explosion

Ngl. I honestly had a lot of fun with this game. The combat was alright but at times it sucked. But the game kept bringing new ideas every time it was about to get boring. The game is bad but it is not boring, except for maybe the beginning.

wish he'd gotten further in to the 'tonal whiplash' level, where you go into the alien ship and duke has all these weirdly melancholy lines about how the babes are all alien baby pods now, like "They're not even human anymore..." -- keep in mind that within this same level there were also tits fused to the walls, which you could slap around for literally no reason.

Honestly, i never understood the hate for Duke Nukem Forever. I don't think that it was as bad as some people make it out to be. And to tell you the truth, i don't think that the game could have lived up to the 14-year hype even if it was nearly perfect in every aspect.
