Loved your response to the tag. George Benson was a great pick. Love his playing. Issac Hayes needs to be in my collection list. Well done.

    What a great topic .
I was was a teenager in the mid 60s and early 70s , and I carried around a transistor radio all of the time .
The two sides of my musical coin were : British Invasion / Rock / Prog Rock , and the other side was R&B / Soul / Funk .
The Canadian radio stations fed us a steady diet of both . You’re right when you say that the Soul side doesn’t get enough coverage .
My staying in tunes would include music like Bill Withers , Aretha , and Ann Peebles .
When going out I would listen to Earth Wind & Fire’s I Am , Gratitude , or All ‘N All , as well as Rufus , and Wilson Pickett’s , The Exciting Wilson Pickett . The Four Top’s Live ( att the Roostertail ) is also a great one .
I loved that you showed the BlackByrds . Walking in Rhythm is a particular favourite of mine .
Thank you the recommendation of Shelby Lynn . I will explore that one .
    Cheers !

Great video. I love the Shelby Lynne album. Bill Withers is a perfect Sunday morning record.

Maybe because most of my best-loved music falls somewhere in the vicinity of R&B, soul, funk and jazz, this 2025 tag has been the most enjoyable one in a long time for me -- and through it I've discovered a few things that were new to me, as well. Even an old dog of 67 like me can learn new tricks! (And thanks for the shout out to soul pioneer/vibist Roy Ayres and Ubiquity. He'll turn 85 this year!)

I needed cheering up after listening to the Manics all week so those pictures of you at night clubs had done the trick ! You smooth operator 🎉❤

Great video. Love love love the inclusion of Massive Attack. Blue Lines is such a total classic.
Second time I saw that Persuasions LP on the tag. I avoided them because of the a cappella description, but I'm now onboard 💯.
    Cheers! Great stuff! 🤘😁

Hope you like them. They're not earth-shattering, but I find them very listenable.

Hey David. Great video! Bill Withers is fantastic. I chose a song from that same Isaac Hayes album “Walk On By” for a song that was sampled. Great minds think alike! 😎 EWAF great choice! Temptations are killer. I dig Sharon Jones. I thought this was a fun tag to do. And my last tag of the season. 😹cheers

Cheers Bobby. I think this soul tag is a little out of the ordinary, and as you say, a fun one to do. It's been good to dig out a few albums that have been gathering dust and given them a spin for the first time in a while.

George Benson is awesome and I still search for his work, ones I do not own yet, I have a lot & don't have too many left to grab. still remember having to keep it a secret in my younger days as only Rock & Roll was allowed lol. If you like Jazz you must seek out Benson's very early albums from the 60's , fantastic stuff. Love the collection of Soul & Funk , you notice how well dressed and groomed artists were then, suits & dresses were a must then and looking good & polished was paramount. Cheers good stuff.

Benson's great and I admire his jazz period too. I recently bought, and showcased in a video, his 'Carnegie Hall' live album with Hubert Laws, and that's another great album.

That’s was an excellent video, David! Think you were bang on with the format of soul classics being one of the reasons soul isn’t shown more. Interesting what you said about the unsung heroes being the backing bands. I read a great article on the birth of Motown recently. The article spoke about the competitiveness within the studio and how the so-called stars were far down the pecking order in terms of importance within the studio. The best backing bands were the big dogs and would mock the songwriters mercilessly if they felt that the songs weren’t up to scratch. The Funk Brothers taking the piss out of one of the Holland brothers by playing Three Blind Mice instead of the new song he presented to them, cause they thought it was pish 😂 Love the Issac Hayes picture… super cool! I don’t know that Shelby Lynne album… I like the idea of a paired back more intimate interpretation of those great Dusty songs. Love those Temptations psych albums… Cloud 9, Puzzle People… not familiar with the album you showed. Don’t know the Persuasions either. There’s always new stuff to check out at the end of a good vc video! Cheers, Jack

Thanks a lot Jack. That article seems well worth getting a hold of. Have you got a link to it? If you have can you email it to me? (my email can be found at the bottom of the page on my website, the link to that being in my channel description on YT). Nice to chat with you last night. I just had a look at how close to the end I bowed out, and caught the exchange about 'cultural appropriation' in music at the end. Blimey. What rubbish. It's a big melting pot, and always has been. Like you said The Beatles and Stones did it with a combination of love and greed (Zep, with the greed only 😅), and then got their creative juices flowing and created something new out of it. I wonder what the stuntman would have said about British Prog bands stealing from German, Italian, Russian, and French classical composers?! It came full circle when Prog fans started exploring Classical music. And on and on it goes....thankfully. As for the 'English Disease', it wasn't ecstasy that moderated hooliganism, it was seated stadia, rising ticket prices, Sky TV, and the emergence of the middle-class football fan. What was left for hooliganism was the old tribal rivalries of Scousers versus Evertonians, Geordies versus the Mackems, and the Old Firm. Everyone else stuffs their face with prawn sandwiches. 😃
Check out that Shelby Lynne album. It's lovely. Cheers!

Nicely contextualised during the intro, David. I also chose Give Me The Night as my Soul tag Saturday night record…..wow and I chose By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Isaac Hayes. What a coincidence!….uploaded last week…

Nice one Harvey. Such an overlap in our selections. I wish I had some Mandrill though. I find there's a lot of albums in the psychedelic soul, early-70s period that passed me by, and I need some guidance on what to explore next. When you get a minute, maybe drop me a line on the email that's shown at the bottom of my website (link via my YT channel description) and we can arrange that coffee, and I can properly get to hear that Black Pumas album!
