The golden rule of a DIY restoration is take your time and do the job properly don't rush it by giving yourself deadlines to get it back on the road for the summer it'll all be worth it in the end 👍
Adams been told this by several well known cosworth guys now. You need to do these properly they dont last otherwise and 2yr down the line you are having to strip the thing to get to a bad bit again. Hes doing the right thing by getting it to be a reliable working car but deadlines for home gamer DIY guys is always a disaster. Home gamers you do a bit at a time and only come back to the next bit when you arent scunnered with the last bit taking up 5x more effort than planned. Im on boats now and we have delayed refurbs by up to 6 month because we didnt like the look of something. On one occasion a customer got one back 4 month late because we found a previous owner had sprayed boyancy foam in via a drill hole in a strake and basically lifted the deck sole off of the beam that went over the keel when the foam expanded. The guy was raging as it was his planned "summer holidays" but when i invited him out to see why we made the decision he was so disgusted with himself for getting abusive he brought us about £3k in bevy, expensive whiskies the lot. He openly admitted he was warned numerous times not to set deadlines for large scale jobs on boats by other people he knew not just us. We told him at the beggining it we wont overlook anything thats coming back to bite you within 15yr. I understand why people want their nice stuff to play with over summer but the reality is plan for the next summer after that once you start taking grinders to it.
Massive respect to you mate for the time and effort you put into your cars. What we have here is the north east new wheeler dealers in the making. Keep it coming, loving the videos!!
@@johncoldwell340 I know it’s fake John, I wasn’t making comparisons on how authentic one is in comparison to the other, it’s obvious Adam’s videos are genuine. More of a compliment in that they could and should be as popular. I hope this clears my comment up for you!!
@@patrick2504 I wasn't really replying to you as such, just letting people know wheeler dealers is fake as fuck, sorry if you thought it was a dig at you patrick hope you have a great Christmas
Just a thought. If you replace all the fuel lines and brake lines now, they will need removed to get the floor media blasted. Creates a lot more Labour hours, which you are going to do twice. Why not put the back axle back on to get it rolling and get a few quotes for getting the floor pan blasted properly. The chassis leg welding & patching you should be able to do, straight flat pieces, as long as the metal is clean. Maybe delay the fuel filler repair and try get a temporary patch in there to replace the rot. That bit isn’t structural and is out of view. So again you should be ok to patch it up with the mig. There isn’t an easy way to get Schultz off, other than an industrial blaster. I think you’re better off taking the hit now while you have it pulled down, and forget about your deadline to get it on the road. Deadlines are for work mate, this is meant to be pleasure. And you want it done right. Do it now.
Don't give up at the first hurdle!! You can fix it! Just concentrate on one patch at a time, do the welding on your back-get a welding jacket if needs be. Also, hot air gun for the shultz then grinder if needed
Have my mk3 golf on a spit in my garage. Have been wire wheeling all the underseal off to bare metal over the last few months. Total pain but good to see exactly what is needed…
As someone mentioned before don’t give yourself deadlines you’ll be your own worst enemy get all the rust issues repaired first while everything is dropped , 👍
brilliant Adam, you have a ramp thats half the battle. Dont give up yet, give it a go first bud you often surprise yourself when you try things first. Good luck fella
I did repair those areas from chassis legs in my Mk1 Sierra (which has similar platform than cossie-esc), obsvoiusly it was bit of a pain in the ass to do it on axlestands, but wasn´t impossible task. I did make sort of jig bar to support subframe bush mounting points while welding the right side chassis leg just in case to prevent any movement between mounting points during on welding. Anyway, this is an awesome project and I always love to see FastFords getting back to road so keep up the goodwork!👍
Hello Adam my be you should look into ice blasting the underneath of the car I have seen a lot of my other people i am subscribed to use it and it is brilliant I love both your cars I was gutted when you sold your other car I love your videos keep them coming many thanks Vinnie
Great update on the progress, Adam. I know you have set yourself a goal of getting it back on the road by March but please don't rush this part as it's probably the most valuable investment you do with the car by doing the underside properly. Now you have a perfect reason for what to do with the 3 door, use it until you are finished with the Escort 🙂 I had the exact same feeling when doing the underside on my saff years ago but doing everything right the first time is absolutely key. Take your time and set yourself smaller goals underway in the process. Getting parts back from powder coating, ordering new shiny parts etc. will keep you motivated with the shitty work 🙂I know it's frustrating work but well worth it in the end.
Personally i’d do a full restoration on it strip and dip it the prices are only going one way.. whilst there is of course costs involved in doing this think of the content that you can bring……you’ve got this 💪

I find heating up small areas of the undercoat/shutz with an electric heat gun and scraping it off with a narrow scraper works well. The residue can then be gotten off with some gasoline (petrol) on a rag and fine wire wool .You can then wire wheel and or spotblast the corroded bits and then epoxy prime and top coat the whole thing. Of course it takes time and graft but straight sandblating wont remove underseal , it either bounces off or is captured in the more fresh stuff. Ivedone quite a few cars this way ;(Aston Martins, Mini Cooper S.s , E type jags and Ferraris , Pontiac Trans Ams and when I was alot younger , Escort RS 2000's and Capris .Goodluck, WB, Ontario Canada (the real home of rust)
Hi Adam, when I was young back in 80s, I worked on Morris Minors, we used to put them on a side frame, so much more access for a superb result. Sand blast the underside then repair the floor + frame if needed, then zinc paint primer and so on. It will be good for 15/20 years as a daily driver. Good luck with this. Check out the Morris Minor Center in Bath near Bristol, my company subbed work for them. PS if they are still going lol.
Adam,I've followed you since you bought your sapphire,I met you at the nec,I enjoy your video and you try your best, and I look forward to the end result knowing you it will be right- have a lovely Christmas.
That stuff if a bear to remove. I used a few different types of tips on the Bacho 625 carbide scrapers. I used Acetone afterwards to remove the residue.
Big big job there mate we have all been there , thinking wtf have I brought 😂, tbh was expected seeing all that undersill obvious hiding something , not the same when welded to death always comes back through in the end unless u blast it 👊
If you can afford it, get the underside of that Cosworth soda blasted and primed. Then plasma cut the bad stuff out and patch it with the same guage steel. I think you're making work for yourself mate. I watched Wheeler dealers Escort Cosworth edition and couldn't beleive the work they did on that engine! The Escort Cosworth is quite a weird car which needs state of the art labour to keep it 100 percent. I wish I was in a position to help you!!
*Subscribed. I'm from Canada and the Escort Cossie has been my favorite car since the early 90s. I wish I could get one. But, not for 10,000+ quid. So, I'm out of luck.*
Johnny Smith on The Late Brake Show had a treatment done on the underside of his Japanese taxi, basically like a freeze process that cleans the underside of your car to look like new. It's expensive though.
Every thing can fixed and restored just have faith and you’ll do it I’ve got the underside of my ST AKA TAZZ to start after xmass as the previous owners never did it
Try a heat gun and paint scrapper, it gets the old underseal off really well. If you have any smeared underseal use brake cleaner to get it off it does the job.
I have the same problem with my fiesta rs turbo I’m about to restore, all original underside but they have put that horrible black stuff straight over the top of dirt ect , my rust is a little bit worse then yours , definitely getting a roll over jig for the job 😅
Love watching your vids matey, dont give yourself a dead line or there will always be something you wished you done better, it will be done when its done come the summer you have a lovely sierra you can use if its not done take it easy 😉
Just keep at it mate forget next summer crack on with the escort. If you struggle with any bits pay a decent welder to do it. You can do all the prep cut the patches. And just blast the 3 door round in 2024 ❤great video
those section on the chassis legs though they feel solid will be rotten right through and need the sections replaced, been panel beater in rest and collision since 1987, the good thing you have going for you is the replacement panels are available including the chassis repair sections or complete leg/s i got the arse end of the classic car world and ended up collecting and restoring old 1960' and 70's skodas!! 90% of the time its make the panels myself. if you do try to do it yourself and put the car on a spit (i made my own from two engine stands, one either end with some mods to the uprights) if you get it upside down dry ice is a good way to freeze the shultz to break it of without the gooey mess from heat. back in the day i used to just flame it off with oxy acetelyne, smokey as heck but back then that was just the way we did it, hate shultz, much prefer etc then 2k primer, 3m 2k sprayable sealer expensive as heck but its the nuts when its on and then body colour gloss, car lasts for ever like that and its piss easy to keep clean and dirt free, dirt just washes off with shults if its the stick kind its dark and the mud sticks to it then it gets wet and holds the water there for ages first vid of yours i've seen so i'll take a look at the others, best of luck !!!
A tercoo wheel would be good to get this off, much better than a wire wheel. Keep up the good work. Dry ice is good for cleaning but not stripping back the underside.
Hi Adam, feel for ya mate, it’s hundreds of hours doing it by yourself, or lots of money to get a professional company to do it, you have started, need to finish, and finish to a standard you can be happy with, hoping the price reflects somewhat the condition, I did an older Merc 180 sport last year, but was lucky it was solid underneath, only stripped back the brakes, full needle gun underneath, a bit savage but did the job, certainly removed the rust, treated with rust converter, sprayed the crap out of it with high quality preserves, definitely on of the best preserved cars in the NEScotland ha !
I stripped the underside of mine. It did need some welding but was silly bits. In the end, it was going for paint, so got them to remove the rear beam and get the underside done. Dont lose heart in it. Better to find out how it actually is and get it repaired, at least you know what was done and by whom.
In the same boat as you Adam ! Astra Mk3 Gsi stripping it back to bare metal to get it done properly. So far tried wire wheel, grinding disc, Cheap sand blaster, nitromors! 😅 Just bought these rust grinding discs from toolstation il have to let you know how I get on ! Maybe a car rotessiere would help with them shoulders as you can access the underside easier ? 😂
Never take a shiny car for granted. Always do a detailed inspection underneath. I've avoided buying 100's of lemons in my time by taking my Mat, mirror and powerful torch with me to buy vehicles. I always have the last laugh 😎
I know you want it on the road for the summer, fair play I'd probably want the same if I had one. But my sensible head would say sod the summer and get it all done, just think that the rust could get worse by the time the summer has finished. At the end of the day the choice is yours fella, just my two bob worth.
The new G series turbos from Pulsar are worth a look mate. A third of the cost of a new Garett and way more advanced than the stock factory T34s you mentioned. I recently used Raceworks 400 series fuel line with their pushlock fittings on my barra build. I was impressed. Can you get a bigger fuel reg to suit that factory rail?
I think the third 'fuel' line is part of the evaporate emissions and the tank breather so it not being vented to atmosphere. If you warm the Shultz with heat gun it should soften it it'll will make your life easier scraping it off.
Doing a bang up job Adam, the Schutz did look like it was coming of like Kebab meat on the spit to begin with. Why would some Muppet do that to a car like this, speechless! Great work Adam, you are a true gluten for punishment. Until next video mate; stay happy and be careful in the garage.
I was quoted at a local restoration place near me (durham) starting at 2k and that's just a little Seicento Sporting of mine. I imagine near double+ for a car that size. Good work though
Great job mate! As soon as you started stripping this I new it would end up being a full on resto, shame to put it together and take apart again go for it now

those section on the chassis legs though they feel solid will be rotten right through and need the sections replaced, been panel beater in rest and collision since 1987,
the good thing you have going for you is the replacement panels are available including the chassis repair sections or complete leg/s
i got the arse end of the classic car world and ended up collecting and restoring old 1960' and 70's skodas!! 90% of the time its make the panels myself.
if you do try to do it yourself and put the car on a spit (i made my own from two engine stands, one either end with some mods to the uprights)
if you get it upside down dry ice is a good way to freeze the shultz to break it of without the gooey mess from heat.
back in the day i used to just flame it off with oxy acetelyne, smokey as heck but back then that was just the way we did it,
hate shultz, much prefer etc then 2k primer, 3m 2k sprayable sealer expensive as heck but its the nuts when its on and then body colour gloss, car lasts for ever like that and its piss easy to keep clean and dirt free, dirt just washes off
with shults if its the stick kind its dark and the mud sticks to it then it gets wet and holds the water there for ages
first vid of yours i've seen so i'll take a look at the others, best of luck !!!
A tercoo wheel would be good to get this off, much better than a wire wheel. Keep up the good work. Dry ice is good for cleaning but not stripping back the underside.
Cheers Adam great video mate. Any”classic” you have to do it properly just for your piece of mind 🌲👍👍

I have a corgi model of the JPS that was my dads when he was a kid in the 70's. Legendary motor that.
I stripped the underside of mine. It did need some welding but was silly bits.
In the end, it was going for paint, so got them to remove the rear beam and get the underside done.
Dont lose heart in it. Better to find out how it actually is and get it repaired, at least you know what was done and by whom.
That valve with a ball on it is likely an anti gravity fuel valve for when/if the car rolls over!
Hi Adam Redish Motor offer a under carriage restoration usually on M3s, you never know they make take it on.
Absolutely astounded at the effort and dedication you put into your car work.
Seriously man, I can not stress just how much I admire you're talent.
👅
Thanks Nik
Use a dull chisel on any flat surfaces and it’ll take strips of the undercoat off easily. Did a good portion of my old skyline like that
In the same boat as you Adam ! Astra Mk3 Gsi stripping it back to bare metal to get it done properly. So far tried wire wheel, grinding disc, Cheap sand blaster, nitromors! 😅
Just bought these rust grinding discs from toolstation il have to let you know how I get on !
Maybe a car rotessiere would help with them shoulders as you can access the underside easier ?
😂
that's a bejesus job........may swell do a nut and bolt restoration adam? you opened the can of works mow
And here he is at the top of a very, very slippery slope….. 😂😂
Never take a shiny car for granted.
Always do a detailed inspection underneath.
I've avoided buying 100's of lemons in my time by taking my
Mat, mirror and powerful torch with me to buy vehicles.
I always have the last laugh 😎
Have you had a look at dry ice blasting
Thanks for all the great videos in 2023 fair play to ya 👍👍👍
I feel for you bro'! Been there, done that!
Maybe you could rent a dry-ice machine? Makes the job much much much easier 👍
I know you want it on the road for the summer, fair play I'd probably want the same if I had one. But my sensible head would say sod the summer and get it all done, just think that the rust could get worse by the time the summer has finished. At the end of the day the choice is yours fella, just my two bob worth.
I've heard that heating all the underseal up with a heat gun before using the multitool helps alot
Adam lad you have done a good job underneath the car mate
Only one way this is going, full strip, acid dip & start from scratch. Once you start digging you will never stop.
I'm doing a supra mk3 atm. Made my own roll over jig and it saved so much hassle. Although car needs to be a shell In my opinion.
Keep grinding away buddy hard work pays off
Im 5 years into restoring a focus rs, done my own welding, get it on a spit and ul b surprised how easy ul find it once u get going.
Take a second mortgage out and Send it to Yorkshire car restorations they’re the boys for this
They are, but F that.
I’ve just been watching Yorkshire car restoration working on Matt Armstrongs bmw. He’s awesome at this sort of stuff.
Great job mate! As soon as you started stripping this I new it would end up being a full on resto, shame to put it together and take apart again go for it now
Interesting fact. Me and my brother scanned the original 72d up at Classic Lotus for Pocher/Hornby to make this model!
Would a dry ice machine take all of the Shultz off? Love the videos btw
I know they use it on sound detonating in its raw form. It hardens and makes it brittle.
2 full episodes of Shultz Shultz Shultz Shultz, aye, Shultz shultz Shultz shultz :)
All German viewers have left the chat!
