Glad to see the Circuit receive some love from this awesome channel. Novation really killed it with this and the whole Circuit series. I use the rhythm with a track for each instrument too but some people use sample flip to create mad linear beats or melodic patterns on a single track. On all circuit models it's cool how you can be on the sample/patch page and record straight from it onto a single track, dropping a different sound on each step. You can get some crazy stuff going just experimenting with that on an eight-bar pattern. It's another reason to get this or any other Circuit. And yeah spelling "rhythm" can be a drag lol
@@spvidz It's really super fun: just go to the sample page, and from there play and record are active as usual so if you start recording you can tap in any of the current's page 16 sample selection pads and all the samples gets recorded as the pattern on the selected track. On the OG Circuit (predecessor to Tracks) you had full 32 sample sounds of the active page to tap in and could get some truly strange beats recorded by just tapping randomly. Basically you can have as many different samples on a single track as there are steps or microsteps in your pattern or pattern chain. Novation call it "sample flip" and I'm pretty sure it was introduced as an update as some point.
I REALLY wish you WOULD do a tutorial on this. I've seen others and they just assume too much prior knowledge or don't explain the layout nearly as well as you do. Heck, I'd PAY for it. Even in this little video, I picked up two things I never realized before. You're VERY good at this.

Regarding the flicker, either your camera has a flicker filter (50/60hz) or you go into Shutterpriority (Shutter set manual / apprature and iso automatic) and play around with that. this should eliminate the flicker in most cases :)
I loved it while I had it. After update you could set up you own effects directly on the device. When exiting the chromatic mode, it will actually leave the sample on the last played key/pitch. Fact that you can just press and hold the mixer to quickly pop in and pop out upon release. Fact that you can almost live loop with little trick which SP still does not dooo. For me this brings far more features that KO2 for less money. What I did not care for was the way to view/chain patterns. Also I played some daylight gigs and the led lights just won't cut it at all. Currently on Smpltrek and apart from missing any punch in effects I am happy hippo till the GAS kicks in again.
looking forward to watching this, i just got one in a trade (maschine mk3) for a maschine jam and circuit rhythm. I didn't realize i could use it to make beats! :P
Recording pan sweeping from left to right on a few tracks makes a big difference to bring a bit stereo into the mix rather then just having it turned static hard left or right .. especially for vocal samples
3:26 It makes mixing a bit more messy BUT one advantage of both the Circuits Tracks and Rhythm is the way you can switch between multiple different samples on the same channel/track (they call it "sample flip"). You can put, say, both snare and kick on voice/channel 1, open and closed hats on 2, percussion and cymbals on 3 and so on.
I have the kick and snare and hats on EVERY tracks,even on the 1st where it should only have the kick i started all with 😮 You all say how simple it is,i must be an absolute moron-which is fine with meh,but i don't get it and i've been spending already few days watching vidéos and reading the manual stucked at this point😢
@@marinierferdinand You have access to all the samples in all eight tracks. press "note" to put you in that track's sequencer mode. Now the 4 rows of pads are split into two rows/16steps of the step sequencer and two rows of sample selection. Hold down the pad containing the sample you want then press one of the pads in the step sequencer rows and it will be placed in the step sequencer. Hope that helps.
The workflow and interface are so brilliant. I adored the OG Circuit but was kind of bummed and puzzled when Novation released the sequel tracks and rhythm as separate devices. They leveled up with the tracks, made a purpose-built sampler, and everything remained so, so beginner-friendly. Still, I'd pay $$$ for the "circuit pro" fans dreamed of for years with the features of both, even with a million shift commands. We're used to those ;)
2:06 The internal battery thing isn't so bad as long as Novation/Focusrite subsequently offer a reasonably priced service to repair/replace them. The EU is currently in the process of passing laws stipulating that phones laptops etc must have removable batteries. Not sure if this applies to budget grooveboxes (it should).
Nice! I love seeing more CR content. I like to think of it as a Super PO-33 (before the KOII was released). Resampling is super easy, especially with fixed sample length recording.
The Rhythm and PO33 are my go to samplers because of how easy it is to record and chop samples on. My sampling needs are basic, I’m not trying to turn a farts into a snare sounds.
Well explained upload with no eye Candy apart from the lovely lights on the device like. Good show mate as I've been wanting Circuit to accompany my TR-8S. It's either that or I might jump up in price n' go for the MC-707. I'm more Techno/Warehouse than Hip Hop but I used to spin it back in the day.. early 90's. I crossover Genres like 90's English Hip Hop instrumentals which was quite fast and aggressive mixed with Chicago Jack or Detroit Techno/Electro/Warehouse. Lyrics are good to have in instrumental sets. Folks need to throw in an acapella verse or chorus and ideally one that is 'old skool' plus coherent/audible. Here's one of my Secret Recipe's and I do not think anyone has tried it but I used to spin things like this Live n' Direct : Mix - Man Parrish 'Hip Hop, Be Bop' (Main Mix) with Hijack - 'The Badman Is Robin' (Acapella) It sounds so gooood but you have to practice a few times to mix it sweet. I also put Pink Floyds 'The Run' with DJ Krush back in the day live in a club :D Big Up
Great video!!!! I just want to point that yeah the pads glitch a little on the video but it's not a problem at all, it actually seems like a funny effect of sorts. Now about the circuit, I kinda went back to using it a bit more since your previous video, and yeah it's so portable and fun. I've found that I like pairing it with the microfreak, since I can sequence something in there from the rhythm, then I sample the microfreak output, and except for drums for which I import samples from somewhere else, I can do mostly everything with that small combo. As for the battery, I prefer it integrated. I know it's not serviceable and at some point my rhythm will be 'plugged only' but I find that I don't use much the SP404 on batteries, since it takes like a zillion, and they don't last that much, I just plug it somewhere anyway. But on the rhythm that makes more sense since it's so small and lightweight, I can just take it anywhere with a pair of headphones and have a bunch of portable fun.
Yeah the glitching didn’t turn out all that bad in the end. It would be nice if I could completely stop it though! 💯 agree about the battery in this case it just kinda works with this product. I use a power bank with my sp I never use batteries
My big gripe is with owning the rhythm is the grid fx selection. I feel like a compressor and an eq or two in there would have transformed this into a very decent machine. It makes an excellent midi controller.
@@spvidz The 2.0 firmware was very welcome. It is a such a great device from so many perspectives, but it required so much additional gear to cross the finish line. With the SP404m2 I can mix, master and record. drag and drop to a wav file or record directly to my phone with a USB-C. Also not perfect, but also not incomplete. I still actually use the Circuit way more. Almost daily.
I absolutely love my Rhythm , I have 2 since the samples are in mono I pan channels hard left/right and there both synced in midi. Gives me 4 separate channels to play with. Most live venues are in Mono most likely stereo is a waste.
Was browsing samplers yesterday and noticed how cheap this was. I haven’t bought anything new since the mk2 dropped so I won’t feel bad spending some dough. I really like the look of the polyend tracker mini but so expensive. 😎👍
I have replicated the flickering issue that you have and know how to fix it. First, are you using a phone or DSLR type camera? Either way, the problem is with the shutter speed which is not the same as the frame rate. Your frame rate might be 25FPS, 30FPS or 24FPS... it doesn't matter as all will work. What does matter is your shutter speed. On a DSLR camera and some phones, you need to change the shutter speed in video mode to around 30 (one-thirtieth of a second). It will work at other speeds, but I started to get the flickering effect at shutter speeds around 1/100 of a second and faster. Top-end phones come with the ability to change the shutter speed, but not usually lower models. Almost every DSLR-type camera comes with the ability to change the shutter speed in video mode.
Thanks for the help. I have a DSLR and did a lot of testing with it but still couldn't hit a sweet spot where the flickering was gone and the footage was useable. I did manage to significantly reduce it though
I wish it had a serviceable battary iv been looking at the unit trying to figure out how it comes apart incase i need to change the battery but iv not got a clue as theres no screws unless there under the rubber parts underneath..so god forbid if i ever do need to get a new battery all just need to send it off to novation
Super portable yes. But totally useless outside, since you can't see any of the leds as soon as there is a decent amount of light. Took it on my trip to Tuscany last summer. Had to wait until the sun was gone until I was able to use it 😢

the easiest sampler ever! The only shortcoming is that the outs are very quiet. The rest is a blast. Love the way it sounds (thanks to its built in compressor) used many samplers... never got discouraged by this one. I would say it combines sp 1200 with mpc 1000 and simplifies the workflow a lot...
Is this video a reup? (getting serious deja vu). I especially like the first (very chap hoppy) and last (rugged raw boom bap) beats. The Circuit Rhythm is so close to perfection. It just needs better PPQ/note resolution to allow genuinely off-grid sequencing (6 "microsteps" per step is only 24ppq).
I've been having issues with my camera filming it due to the flickering but I think I've actually found a way to solve it this week so I will be continuing the series soon

There’s not another hardware sampler on the market that’s as much fun as the Rhythm. For me, fun is the key word and selling point.

You have to adjust the shutter speed for flickering! Yes you mess with the frame rate x2 shutter speed. But for flickering you sadly have to.

Im enjoying the circuit rhythm at the moment its fun and addictive the worflow is so fast . Only thing that bothers me with it is the mono sound

I think I have demonstrated those beats before maybe thats what is triggering your memory. I completely agree about off grid sequencing as well!
