    No such thing as "beak in" for speakers or any other audio gear. Amir from ASR did many measurements before and after "break in" of different speaker brands, and there was no difference whatsoever.. People hear what they want to hear. The L100 are badly designed. They're asymmetrical (not mirroring each other, so tweeters and mids are off axis). They were designed just to give a vintage look. They're too big for bookshelves and too small for floor standing.

    • @Tharbamar
      @Tharbamar  ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @E Barbie, Speakers need running-in even after a while not using it, some people are not sensitive enough to notice, the truth is relying on equipments alone don’t tell the whole story, I only trust what I heard, so there is that.
      So you think JBL L100c75th speakers are badly designed? My question for you is do you own them or do tested them in your system? how about you design one and show us how it should be done? criticizing someone work is easy but can you do better? If not STFU. Thanks
      BTW: JBL/Harman have better testing facilities and resources than any other companies in the industry.
      Reality Check: No one makes audio equipments based on measurements alone, there’s also subjective tweaks based on listening test.
      I’ve never heard any JBL speakers image better than L100c75, mirroring or not.

      No human is more sensitive than a precision test equipment, which Amir used for his tests. You cannot hear whats isn't there. Try a true blind test and see if you can tell the difference at least 3 out of 5 times.

    • @Tharbamar
      @Tharbamar  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @E Barbie, Well you have try me with blind test in stereo mode but most of blind tests were done with one speaker which is totally useless, who the heck listen to one speaker?
      Yes precision equipments are better than human hearing but can they measure stereo image?
      Can the measurements tell you emotional connection between music and listener?
      How about 3D sound stage, can precision equipments can measure it?
      Would you like to measure actual acoustic guitar or violin? No one would because music is all about hearing, speakers are the same as those but basic measurements are involved in designing the speakers but subjective listening test is heavily involved as well otherwise it’ll be boring to listen.
      Measurements never tell whole story, never buy anything based on measurements.

      I disagree.. lets take on the main driver.. I was told by the maker to play bass heavy stuff to give the driver a work out to stretch etc.. seem to work for me.. I had a buddy rebuild my crossover for a set of old Polk SDA's - I was shock how the change keep happening after every 60-70 hours and mostly it was on the upper end and the tweeter.. it was a new tweeter also.. a older member told me that where you should have heard the most difference during breakin-burnin. I wasn't just hearing what my hard earned $$$ had bought me as many would like to say! you can not test what the human ear hears on you cant test what bare wire let in in when its shielded or not. You go on and believe what ever you want and I will do the same! you never get me to unbelieve what I really did experience.. that's like saying even speaker sounds the same and every amplifier sounds the same and class A and class A_B and D are the same and it just gets silly.. you live your life in your world and I will live mine ..peace have a great weekend enjoy!!

    So good to know they can play at modest volumes and still sound very good. For many of us, that is very important as much of our listening is done 50dB to 80dB, and we can only "rock out" to the 90-95dB levels every once in a while. Very good review! Thank you! These, or the L100 Classic, or the Klipsch Forte IV are on my short list.

    I have been installing car audio since the late 1980s. My point is I take things apart and I observe equipment that has failed. When JBL (harmon) wants to build a high end loudspeaker they can and do it as well as anyone. I have listened to these JBL L100s at RM audio festival and I think they sound very nice for smaller rooms. If your room is larger and project more than 15' feet I would go for JBL HDI-3800 (which I own). 3800 drivers can be pushed harder and I have older amps that can really deliver power. I think L100s are beautiful. So its really a matter of size of room and the aesthetics you find appealing.

    • @Tharbamar
      @Tharbamar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @rosswarren436
      @rosswarren436 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can. Most people are clueless. I got into a long discussion on another forum about why G-R Research doesn't bother to put "before" and "after" sound samples on TH-cam, but they still don't understand. Even Tharbamar mentions that using specific Sony headphones can only get you about 60% of the way there to being able to make an honest rough comparison.
      Best thing is to seek out a bricks and mortar store for a demo. Yeah, the room and amp will make a difference compared to your home, but at least you will be hearing the real thing.
      People who think they can judge anything from a compressed lossy TH-cam audio file are missing the point.
      Fortunately of the three out of five speakers I am considering as my "end game" speaker (these, Polk R700, Klipsch Forte IV, and Tannoy), I can drive 50 miles and hear them. Worth the effort I think.

But, is the internal setting of the dac at maximum volumen? and the amp volume set at 90 to 95% (to avoid clipping)? and then you only play with the volume control from your sitting position. Or how is your setting? Thank you

    This is a very nice-sounding speaker, and quite a bit more balanced than some other JBLs. They should be at this price point. The CD you use to demo also is quite a challenge for many speakers. The CD allows the ensemble's independent rise and fall of instruments to rise and fall, as is normal in live performances. I am wondering if the tweeters and midrange being off-axis account for the homogenous blending that this requires.
    I am not sure if this speaker will be bested by speakers where the drivers are somewhat more transparent.
    When you hear the clapping, some of what the speaker does and does not do is more apparent.
    If I were to be obsessive, I would wish for a tiny bit more air around instruments. The midrange is quite nice for female voices, but there is something about the midrange driver that leaves the timbre of instruments and voice, at least to my ears, perhaps a little washed out.
    The piano's upper range is very detailed and voiced, but the left hand vs right hand of the piano has me slightly chasing down the leading edge of those lower mid-range tones and their transients as they die off. If one listens to classical music extensively, or live recordings, this may be more obvious.
    If one only listens to small ensembles like this example, they are likely to enjoy the version this speaker presents. Before purchasing, I would certainly want to do a good deal of listening.
    I have a suspicion that if one uses the Four Seasons CD from the Avison Ensemble which is a Linn Recording, Altre Follie - Jordi Savall on AliaVox, or back to back various recordings of Heitor Villa-Lobos - Bachianas Brasileiras No.5 it may become more obvious. That should play to this speaker's strength, but the upper range of those lower sororities and the lower ranges of the strings might speak for putting out 5k for a speaker, that while very good, may not be an all-a-rounder.
    The Bachianas Brasileiras constitute a series of nine suites by the composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, written for various combinations of instruments and voices. Nr. 5 uses cellos extensively with the high female voice.
    That being said, this is the best version of this speaker ever. They should be listened to on the enclosed speaker stands. Otherwise, I find this the best of the JBL 100s. I am not sure it is worth 5 k when Klipsch Heresy Model 4 comes in at $3,000 vs $5,000 for this special edition. It can go a tiny bit lower but it will sound less alive than the Klipsch

    you might get better synergy if you put the tweeter where the port is and the port where the tweeter is, and placing them on their sides.

I'm sure they're great but I'll stick with my A/D/S L810's that I scooped up in 9.5/10 showroom condition for $750 that were made in America that also more than likely sound as good as these JBL's . Granted I got incredibly lucky with my find as I'm a Contractor who was working on a former A/D/S salesman's house who was the original owner from 1980 as he bartered with me by taking $750 off of my labor bill after me begging him 🤣 . He also has an immaculate pair of A/D/S L910's with stands but wasn't ready to give them up even though he's 72 years old , although the L910's are way to much speaker for me anyways .

      But as you said to each of own as long as you enjoy it, who cares but one thing I can tell you is you don’t know anything about L100 C 75th, not the same you may know, that’s all.

    It's an insult that JBL would charge that kind of money and not make mirrored L/R speakers. Some of the ugliest speakers I've seen in a long time also. Some people want to live in the past I guess.
