Billboard charts-wise, 1989 belonged to Bobby Brown, Milli Vanilli, Paula Abdul, New Kids On The Block and Madonna. They had the most hit singles. Also the year of Richard Marx, Debbie Gibson, Martika and Chicago's top ballads, a great year for rockers (Bon Jovi, Poison, Guns N' Roses, Warrant, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Skid Row), the year of Tim Burton's Batman fever, and the release of Janet Jackson's multi-platinum album Rhythm Nation 1814, the #1 selling album of 1990.

What I remember about 1989 is that modern pop radio would play a song for 2-3 months and then you never hear it again. It was about the same amount of time for popular artists to come out with a new song. The music never got stale. There were so many good songs, the charts couldn't contain them all. By the mid to late 1990's, modern pop radio was playing songs heavily for 6-9 months. Many songs were good when they came out, but after 6 months of constantly hearing them on the radio, it got sickening.

Example. You see how loooong they stretched out Appetite for Destruction singles.

Strangely I agree that it was the year that a lot of positive things happened in my life and worldwide. It was pretty much the end of the cold war with the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. However, music wise I think 1987 was the best year for constant hits despite the number 1 song of that year being a novelty song.

I will eternally have an issue over "Look Away" being #1.

No, I remember this year very clearly. Look Away was the Billboard #1 song of 1989 even though it wasn't released nor peaked in 1989. It peaked December 1988. In matter of fact, so did the #3 song by Poison peak in 1988. The #2 song by Bobby Brown was also released in 1988, but peaked in January 1989. The best performing songs on the all time list that were from 1989 were actually "Miss You Much" and "Another Day In Paradise" both of which outperformed "Look Away", but had a large portion of their chart runs in 1990.
