    “Red Foley in So Powerful Strong” is presented by Ford Motor Company’s Tractor and Implement Division. This is a promotional film highlighting the new Ford 861 Diesel Tractor circa 1958. The film opens with a close-up of an “on air” button in a recording studio (0:14). Red Foley is playing his guitar and singing “Alabama Jubilee.” He finishes the song and says goodnight to the audience over the radio. As he plays an outro, the announcer thanks the sponsors of the Red Foley Show, including Jim Hanks, the local Ford Tractor dealer (0:28). Everyone in the station says goodnight to one another, and a producer sticks around to tell Red Foley that Jim Hanks, the Ford dealer, is interested in meeting with him to discuss a jingle for a new Ford tractor and Foley agrees.
    Viewers see a new Ford 861 Diesel Tractor inside a warehouse (1:28), and Jim Hanks sits at his desk, reading a binder, when he hears a knock at the door. Red Foley enters and sits across the desk from Hanks, guitar in hand. The two talk about Ford releasing a new diesel tractor. Hanks tells Foley that diesel burns fuel, which is cheaper than gas and gets more power out of each gallon. Hanks finally reveals that Ford has developed a light, powerful diesel, and that he’d like Red Foley to sing a song about it. Together, they walk over to the new tractor.
    Jim Hanks shows Red Foley the new Ford 861 Diesel (4:52). They discuss the price, Hanks saying it’s only slightly more expensive than gas tractors, about half as much as most other diesels. Hanks and Foley walk over to a display explaining the schematic view of a Ford 861 Diesel Tractor’s fuel injection system (7:00). The gas ignition system is substituted with twice as much compression. The carburetor is substituted with a fuel injector pump and a set of injectors that spray the diesel directly into the cylinder. Hanks takes Red over to examine the injector and other parts (7:48). He shows him the pump, then they take a look at the injectors. Hanks explains that they’re spring-loaded plungers that release under pressure, which sprays diesel fuel into the cylinder. Hanks explains that with proper care, both the pump and injector will last the life of a tractor.
    Red Foley thanks Jim Hanks for the information and begins to leave (8:50). Hanks stops him, and they walk back over to the Diesel 861 Tractor to discuss the jingle (9:00). Hanks wants Foley to focus on the tractor’s two main benefits: fuel economy and tremendous lugging power adding up to a big cut in operating costs. Foley reaches for his guitar and shares the tune he’s been working on in his head (10:20).
    The film cuts to Foley singing his jingle for the Ford 861 Diesel Tractor in the recording studio (10:45). The screen fades to show the tractor in action in a montage of farmers plowing fields. Viewers see a farmer starting the engine on a cold winter day, in the snow, then moves forward effortlessly (11:24). The film closes with Red Foley in the studio as he finishes the jingle and winks at the camera (11:51).
    Clyde Julian Foley (June 17, 1910 - September 19, 1968), known professionally as Red Foley, was an American singer, musician, and radio and TV personality who made a major contribution to the growth of country music after World War II.
    For more than two decades, Foley was one of the biggest stars of the genre, selling more than 25 million records. His 1951 hit, "Peace in the Valley", was among the first million-selling gospel records. A Grand Ole Opry veteran until his death, Foley also hosted the first popular country music series on network television, Ozark Jubilee, from 1955 to 1960.
    He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, which called him "one of the most versatile and moving performers of all time" and "a giant influence during the formative years of contemporary Country music."

    Too bad Ford gave up on tractors & heavy trucks. They used to make some great ones.

      They made the longest lasting fleet of livery vehicles ever made like the crown vic and the town car. Chevy ain't got no full size rear wheel drive V8 powered sedans.

      Yes they did...have had this old Ford 801 SOS (Select O Speed) for around 25-30 years and my dad broke a trans part and since the SOS is an old school hydrostatic the parts are hard too come by and after 6-10 years later of lookin i just NOW found the part. Ordered it and plan too partially restore it too the showroom quality possibly. Its a shame though Ford made the best tractors and didnt cheap out on any parts whatsoever and were/are built like tanks quite literally. Imagine if they DID bring back Ford tractors today...man if they made em like they used too (all metal no plastic and stupid easy controls) i gurantee theyd sell like hot cakes.

      We have owned a multitude of Ford trucks, tractors, and farm equipment. It has all been the best on the market. Reliability, long life, and does the work perfectly.

    Pretty good timing on this. We just got a 1960 Ford 4040 industrial tractor running that's been sitting for about 20 years. Basically the same machine but with a different front end, a bucket and a backhoe.

      I have a 4140 set up just like that. It's a Diesel, too. I used to have a 841 Diesel with Elenco front-driving axle, but I had too many machines, so I sold it.

    I have and use a Ford 1957 850 LP, (factory propane) version it's rated for a 3 bottom plow. The same rating as the gas 850/860 versions. The video shows the 1958 diesel running a 4 bottom plow and pulling deep. Granted it has the wheel weights but that's a big increase. the duel sub soiler they show running I've seen stop bigger tractors cold. None of the tractors built today are built as tough as the old iron.

    "Cheaper than gasoline"...if only they could have looked ahead to the day when oil companies decided to grossly over-charge for diesel fuel like they do today.

      The govt. Is taxing business and industry by taxing diesel. I boils down to corrupt politicians and govt. contracts.

      If all the backwards hat wearing , monster drinking, vape cloud puffing kyles of the world stopped "rolling coal" it would drop the price again. Demand is up for diesel and down for gas.

      Diesel went up like crazy during the "oil shortage" (politically created) of the '70s when so many people started buying Diesel cars because the fuel was so cheap compared to gasoline. Much to the chagrin of truckers who relied on the lower price to make a living! In a way, the people who bought Diesel cars to get cheap transportation kinda got theirs, but those who needed it like farmers too, really got screwed!

    We had a 981 gas growing up. It pulled 3-16s anywhere except Gumbo. Never saw a 4-14 behind one, would love to have tried one now. I have a 981 Diesel as a fun distraction among the other tractors.

      I just dont really see a for 800 series being able to handle 4-14s in very many conditions i pull a 4-14 ford 101 plow with my super major and thats a good work out in heavy soil lol

    Too damn bad the soccer moms and punk kids decided they needed diesel engines to get groceries or drive to school.The truckers always hated diesel pick ups because they knew the day would come when everybody owned one and would drive the price of fuel out of sight.A 1 ton diesel pick up used to get 25 mpg with fuel prices at around 50 cents a gallon.Made sense back then.Fast forward 25 years,you get 10 mpg and pay $3.50-$4.00 a gallon.I will stick with my $20,000 less half ton gasser.

    I noticed in all these vids that nobody mentioned that the 3 point linkage was invented in Britain, by a British Guy.........Its a bit like in US History they will tell you about WW2 and how they invaded all those Islands getting closer and closer to Japan......what they completely miss out, is that when the US Marines went ashore at every single island battle they were supported by the Huge Guns of a Battleship or several Battleships....many of them British Battleships (little known fact, during WW2 the UK had many more Battleships that the USA)...it's one thing we did have a lot of.....we had to borrow little destroyer escorts from the USA...we didn't have many at all...But huge battle wagons oh we had plenty of them back then.

    Nice commercial, terrible acting. If he wanted to educate people on diesel engine principles, he left out the part about air heating up under compression. He did say that a diesel had to have much higher "operating pressure" than a gas burner, but he didn't say why, exactly. In other words, not enough explanation of compression ignition.
