  • All Saints, North Street has a ring of eight bells, with the majority being cast by John Taylor and Co. The back four are all 1920's, 3 and 4 are both 1989 and the two trebles are both cast in 1999 by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Together they produce a sweet sounding peal of eight! Two things that are impressive is that the bells sound pretty uniform as an eight and the other being that the tower looks as though it can a really light peal of bells. The bells here ring OK, but are hard to strike well and can be flighty. Apart from that they are a very nice going peal of eight!
The earliest part of the church is the nave dating from the 12th century. The arcades date from the 13th century and the east end was rebuilt in the 14th century, when the chancel chapels were added.
An anchorite building was erected at the west end in the fifteenth century and a squint made through the wall so that Emma Raughton could observe and hear the Mass being said. This was rebuilt in 1910.
The church was restored between 1866 and 1867 by JB and W Atkinson of York, which included the rebuilding of the south aisle wall, the addition of a porch and a vestry, half of the roof being replaced, new seating provided throughout, the pillars and walls scraped, and a new organ provided. The masonry work was done by Mr Brumby of Skeldergate, the carpentry by Mr Dennison, the plumbing and glazing by Messrs Hodgson and the painting by Mr Lee of Gillygate. The chancel ceiling and reredos were decorated by Mr Knowles. The chancel was laid with Minton tiles.
Unfortunately when it was too late I realised I didn't record this touch and had to use the footage from Lucien Lapthorn! The photos are all mine though. We hear the back six bells being rung to Grandsire Doubles. Enjoy!

Did you see the spiral staircase up to the bells? About 3/4 of a turn in about 8m height.

No. I was busy focusing on the ringing rather than observing other things!

I ring there as well for the RWNYC. I thought those bells sounded a lot like buckets nearer to the back bells to me

@@RingerThomasI thought they were lovely, even as an eight.
