Ringer Thomas
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 พ.ค. 2019
Hello and welcome to my channel. My name is Thomas, and as you can see, I am a church bell ringer. I have always been interested in the sound of bells ever since I was very young.
This channel covers my hobby in full detail, and I would like to share my experience with the world on why I enjoy bell ringing and why you yourself could be a ringer too. What you will see on here is various visits I do, whether it is a quarter peal or general ringing. It covers pretty much of what my ringing life is all about. So I would suggest you subscribe so you don't miss out on the experience 😉

An excerpt from a remarkable peal rung by the Cumberlands of Spliced Treble Dodging Maximus, showcasing extraordinary striking and ringing that captivates all who hear it. The church houses twelve magnificent bells, the largest weighing 18 hundredweight, which replaced an older, heavier set of ten. In 1972, the church added two more bells, and some were recast, ensuring their bright and delight...

An excerpt from a quarter peal of Plain Bob Triples rung at Richmond on Sunday, 6th October 2024. The bells at Richmond are an 18½cwt ring of eight, cast by a mix of founders including Robert Catlin, James Bartlet, and Lester & Pack. They produce a loud, punchy sound that is both robust and powerful. While some may describe them as clangy, I find them full of character and history - they truly ...

Credits to Euan Thomas for the last photo. An excerpt from a peal of Mixed Minor methods rung at St Vedast, Foster Lane on Saturday, 5th October 2024. The methods included two extents of Cambridge, one extent of Double Oxford, two of St Clements, and two of Plain Bob. I had the pleasure of organising the peal myself, and the ringing went well - we achieved some really decent ringing, making for...

An excerpt from a quarter peal of Plain Bob Major rung at Hampton, on Monday, 30th September 2024. The church has a historic ring of eight bells, cast in 1831 by Thomas II Mears. Though the bells were retuned and overhauled in 1951, they still sit on their original headstocks. They’re known for being relatively easy to ring, though the treble rope can sometimes snag on woodwork in the ringing r...

An excerpt of a unsuccessful peal attempt of Spliced Triples at St Peter's Staines on Thursday, 26th September 2024. The bells at St Peter’s Church were cast by John Warner and Sons in 1896 and 1902. They possess that classic Warner growl, giving them a unique character; however, their sound is not particularly bright or pleasant. While they function adequately, striking them well can be quite ...

An audio excerpt of a quarter peal of Grandsire Triples on the wonderful back eight at Kingston upon Thames on Sunday, 15th September 2024. This quarter peal was rung in memory of Andrew Bolton, who passed away on 23rd August 2024, aged 83. Andrew learned to ring in Newburn, Northumberland, and was a member of the College Youths. He rang extensively in the UK and abroad, including at St Paul’s,...

An excerpt from a quarter peal of Plain Bob Triples at Barnes, Greater London on Friday, 6th September 2024. St Mary's Church in Barnes boasts a remarkable set of eight bells, which are notably tuned to G# rather than the G tuning often cited in bell-ringing references, such as Dove's Guide. Despite this unique tuning, the bells harmonize beautifully and are known for their pleasant tone, espec...

Excerpt of a Quarter Peal of Bourne Surprise Minor rung at Pirbright on Wednesday, 10th July 2024. St. Michael's Church in Pirbright has a ring of six bells. The back five bells, cast in 1822 by Thomas II Mears, were overhauled by John Taylor and Co. in 1933, during which the treble bell was likely recast. The bells sound OK. An excerpt from a quarter peal of Plain Bob Minor at Ash, Surrey on Wednesday, 10th July 2024. This quarter was dedicated to a good friend of mine called Hans Rashbrook who rang in the Hendon area and also went to lots of ringing events I happened to attend in London. A great guy. Some video and audio excerpts from a quarter peal of Grandsire Triples at Bagshot feature the bells. Thanks to Luca Greenslade for the photos and one of the ringing room excerpts. Nice bells deserve nice ringing and this video epitomises that. Lovely indeed.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello Thomas, first time i have hezrd these bells on TH-cam. I used to ring here on Monday ights back in the 1960s You very close to my home tower of St Anns Stamford Hill. My dad rehung the bells in 1957 and added two trebles to make an 8. His name is on the second. th-cam.com/video/Tgoue-Cm3Xo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=r2HlASOpUynjSvrv
Sounds a bit like Beverley minster.
Beverley are far better!
Are you joking, these are old style tuning, Beverley use Simpson harmonic tuning .
Definitely old school bells here and anticlockwise too. Thry sound good for old bells. I have never worked out why some peals are anticlockwise when conventionally bells are.clockwise. You Zyklon be interested in this Thomas, on Sunday the staple on the 11th clapper at St Andrews in Sydney broke, the clapper felt out , smashed the slider in two and the shaft of the clapper has a slight bend it. Good it never hit the end of the frame as that could have cracked the bell.
Proper old style noise to these, lovely
Well done Thomas! 👏👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Mesmerising ringing!
Indeed. Someone asked me if I was ringing in this! I'm not even good enough!
@@RingerThomas The key is not good enough 𝘺𝘦𝘵 - the same can be said for many ringers with the drive and passion to get to that stage (myself included - I am definitely not yet at that level!) but if we keep working hard we'll get there at some point 🙂
Thank you for the history of this wonderful place. The bells are great! Liked and subscribed.
The ringing room could do with some tarting up, very grim. I think a rehang would be good and also some modern tuning.
@@Steven_Rowe I'd leave the rehang and retuning out of the equation. They are full of character! The ringing room has character as it reminds me of a prison.
@@RingerThomas yes they have charactercwithout a doubt. The prison analogy is brilliant Love it. I heard from Billy Clarke, he said he knows you. He likes ringing at asouthwark, he also likes The Gilletts at Clernkenwell, this is a must ring at as I know you like the s9und of good bells and Clerkenwell are so good..
Some very nice well struck ringing. Lovely old school bells too.
Yes they are
Really lovely ringing on some classic Whirchapel bells, I think they would augment to a fine 8.
If you want the eight bell version. Go to St Andrew, Holborn.
@@RingerThomas I think two of my favourite 8s are Jewry and St James Clerkenwell. Clerkenwell are Gilletts & J gems.
@@Steven_Rowe I also saw Billy Clarke on Friday. He said he knows you.
@RingerThomas he certainly does. Billy is a really good heavy bell ringer. I believe he lives in London now. I know he liked Clerkenwell, I don't know if you have rung there but they are beautiful bells.
@Steven_Rowe I haven't rung at Clerkenwell. However, I am ringing at Hampstead, which is a 24cwt eight.
Do you know those back 6 bells are actually the same not to the front 6 of York minster.
These sound nice
@@Coreytheringer2345 Yes. They are not too bad for Warners. I was expecting worse!
@@RingerThomas tenor 15/1/2cwts
Very nice harmony :) Could You record bell in St Matthias church in Richmond (sorry for importunity) and bells in st Augustine church in Broxbourne please? 🙃
Yes I haven't forgotten.
@@RingerThomas Oh, that's great :) I've got a nostalgic memories with this both churches and it would be nice after years to see this bells ringing :) Can't wait :)
These are nice!
Well they're muffled do it has to be a funeral
these bells are really beautiful, I didn't know this church
Hello! Could You record (inside of tower) bells in st Matthias church in Richmond (Gr. London), please?
I could try. But I doubt it will happen. They have one bell.
@@RingerThomas Ok, so please try to record that bell inside of tower. I'll be so grateful :)
@@RingerThomas if You could in the video with that bell show the ringing bell and from time to time show photos of church and belfry (I mean bell ropes chamber and some photos of the bell and bell chamber. I can sent You some movie with such footage, if You don't know what I mean) if obviously a montage of this video this way isn't a problem for You. I'll be so greatful for movie with this bell. God bless Yourself! 🔔😀
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Wonderfully spacious ringing chamber; and a lovely peal (although not quite as 'sweet' as that of Lincoln).
these aren't too bad, nice and full of character, most importantly audible !
Name of this electronic carillon????
Hello! Could You record (inside of tower) bells in st Matthias church in Richmond (Gr. London), please? 🙂
Awesome!
Sounds like St Nicholas Church from Halewood, Liverpool
Very nice bells :)
They are!
Absolutely beautiful
They sound quite identical to the back 8 at Hexham Abbey in Northumberland.
That tenor is a fair chunk of bronze, have you rung it singled handed or only with a strapped. I would worry I wouldn't get it off thd balance. Heck you set it first go, always a challenge on a big bell as they are always light set so you worry a out breaking a stay. I have no idea how anybody can turn it in, I would drum it behind . I have seen peole ring York tenor to Bristol Max and it requires effort unless your technic is really good but even then ringing a peal would be next level .
@Steven_Rowe Michael Wilby has turned it in, which there is a video on TH-cam on Jack Gunnings channel. The bell felt quite smooth, although it was a bit weird to get used to. But it was a great experience! I would love to ring it without the strapper next time!!
@RingerThomas Thomas I'm certain you will, don't know if ringing heavy bells are appealing to you, to some they are, I like ringing tenors to Stedman as you can zone 0ur and listen which I like To be honest if I'm ringing inside on a 10 or 12 I like the 6 or the 8th, ie same bell, it is a bit like the goldilocks bell, just right. The first person to turn in Liverpool tenor to Surprise Max single handed for a peal was Peter Border, a rather large bl9ke with lots of stamina. My old man knew him as hexwas in the College youths and apparently when it came round Border had to ask someone to set the bell, he was a bit done in. I reckon a few pints got drunk after that peal. The heaviest bell I have rung is Bow
@Steven_Rowe Heavy bells are something I enjoy doing, although I don't push it. The heaviest I have rung is Windsor Castle tenor to a quarter, which was quite an effort to ring because of how difficult and oddstruck the bell was. However, yes, in the future, I would love to start ringing big bells to things. I found a particular video extremely helpful. th-cam.com/video/ik4KuWgM_g8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vbiEjxhEgkMoFIhl
@@RingerThomas I went to Windsor Castle with my dad in the early 60s, he worked for Whitechapel and was doing some work on them, I often went with him during school holidays. I loved and got to see so much.

Lovely ringing on nice bells and what a lovely village. It would be so nice to sit in the church yard and listen.
Great video but the ring puzzles me. How can I like and dislike Bourne? It is like there are two strands to follow. Each is fine on its own. But then they cross. I had this same problem yesterday with the Minor you posted. It is strange. Still THANK YOU and the Ringers very much.
Another tower I ring at regularly
Lovely little bells!
Very nice

A warner 6 augmented to an 8 with two gillett and Johnston Trebles. They spound ok but the tenor sounds bit odd. Perhaps some odd harmonics
