    For such long haul flights with all airlines, is there not a second crew on board who take over about mid flight allowing the first to get some sleep before arrival?

      Yes, but they also reach their service limit at some point.

    I drive buses and just like pilots and train crews, we are only allowed a certain amount of driving hours each day. After that, if you continue to operate, there can be serious consequences.

    I was on that LH’s FRA-BLR in Oct 22, that got delayed by 36 hours due to an unscheduled stop in IST. While we passengers appreciated their initial action due to helping a medical emergency, however, thereafter everything went wrong. Our experience of LH’s handling of the situation and thereafter was very bad. They have given small compensation to some passengers on some unknown selective basis…in my case, they are refusing to even accept that flight was delayed for 36 hours, in spite of published evidence and my repeated emails, calls and continuous follow up since last 8 months.
    I have been a LH frequent Flyer since 40+ years with usual generally pleasant experience…however, something doesn’t appear to be right with current LH.

    I am a frequent flyer of Lufthansa and Lufthansa Group carriers. They are decent enough, I tend to get quite cheap tickets, so they are good value for money in that case and are often cheaper than BA and sometimes, no joke, Ryanair.

    If a flight is diverted due to a medical emergency, who bears the responsibility of funding the onward travel arrangements for the passengers who disembarked the plane? And what is the process or accommodation if the airport they diverted to isn't normally served by the affected airline?

    I wonder if the crew change was quick enough to keep passengers on the flight, or if some decided to use ground transportation to complete the journey (Frankfurt is still several hours away by road or rail from Paris mind you) or were put on another plane.
    Might be an interesting one regarding compensation, while the medical emergency is exceptional circumstances, I'm not sure crew timeout would count, so if they were on the ground for more than 4 hours in Paris Lufthansa might have to pony up.

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I figure with a quick calculation, they could figure on running out of duty time before landing in Frankfurt, so they had plenty of time to get a Frankfurt based 747 crew down to Paris non revenue to pick up the aircraft on landing. A relatively quick switcheroo and off they go.
      Similar, I used to drive locally for a grocery store. If I got delayed, and ran against my hours, dispatch could have a relief driver from the terminal meet me where I ran out of hours, and bring us back that night (by some strange coincidence, it only seemed to happen when I didn’t have a sleeper).
      This is where a dispatcher and scheduler who are on the ball shine.

    • @Croz89
      @Croz89 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaysmith1408 Yeah, let's hope they did that, but considering the flight took an extra 8 hours (stopping for a medical emergency doesn't usually take that long, 45-90 minutes on the ground generally), even including extra diversion time I think they probably didn't.

      Not sure which part you don’t understand as the video explained it. These are well founded legal requirements, not a decision on the whims of the crew.

      I think and the company could get a hefty fine if they continued. Would you do it then?

    • @OhHeyItsShan
      @OhHeyItsShan ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Arms length means nothing. Paris to Frankfurt is still a 1+ hour flight away. This hour would mean they would go over their work limit, hence they stopped in Paris. This flight from Argentina would already have 2 sets of pilots (4) splitting the journey by 7+7 hours so they conform to EU guidelines. If the crew had worked past their mandated time, then the airline could be fined for breaking work safety rules. If everything had gone to plan originally, then the crew could change over mid-flight in the Atlantic and they would have made it back to Germany with an hour to spare. Crew rest rules are strictly enforced. Nobody wants an overworked and tired pilot flying their plane.

  • @AlongtheRiverLife
    @AlongtheRiverLife ปีที่แล้ว

    See this crew time legaility, I get it, but once you are working, you are working til the end. There is enough extra crew to switch out, rest and switch back to do it. Then pay the crew much extra, and give them a extra time off in between rotations. We all do it. We all work odd hours. We all adpat to change. This is wrong, the crew takes it from start to finish. I think the unions have their hands in this also.

    • @Nickdpoul
      @Nickdpoul ปีที่แล้ว +8

      actually they would face very heavy fines and possibly have their pilot's license removed if they continued to Frankfurt

    • @MrSchwabentier
      @MrSchwabentier ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@AlongtheRiverLife It hasn't been always done, and that was a time when aircrafts crashed due to pilots exhaustion. It is good that the rules are the way they are.
      This is not about protecting the crews from extra hours, this is about protecting the passengers from dying.
