This should be a better cap now! I do think in the summer heat, the gas vapor expands and causes that dome effect on that plastic wafer. Instead of loosening up the large cap, I'd just open up your brass vent just enough to let it breathe during (heat) expansion and prevent imploding when contents and can cools. I've had plastic cans collapse inward some during cold and I've had ballooning or serious expanding when in sun. Allowing the vent to breathe should take care of all those issues. I have different brands of plastic fuel cans, I'd love to purchase some of the hose connectors and hose end caps, maybe your improved attachment caps, but I have different threads on a couple cans. I've seen you had your email given to others, but this is a year old post...if you still make for others...please make a comment that you do still. Thanks
I would but my 3d printer is down. I have made the 3d files free so if you want to download them there are 3d printing services that will print files you send them. I have no idea what they charge but that is an option.
Me too. I have one! Had to import it though. Cost a small fortune. They have far less EPA BS on the imported ones. I want the flexible metal snake hose for the filler.
never had a problem with mine. but not sold in cal. i do have a couple “safety” cans sold in ca. all steel no cheap plastic in my yard. real spouts. no spillage with them. can can sit in some summer sun no problems, get banged around no problems some of my jerry cans are well over 30 years old never had a fail. keep real gas in them when unused or just fill with old oil. no rust. and they are used as a extra way to keep my garage door closed. kinda hard to life that extra 70 pounds.
Would it be possible to have an otherwise solid cap that has the aftermarket vent installed in that, and just keep the spout on the external spout holder? It wouldn't help with pouring of course, but for storage it should keep it from ballooning up or sucking in.
Replace plastic cap gasket with a thick rubber one. Allows for pressure changes easily. Leaving any vent loose will let in moisture and make your gas go bad. Most people do not have 3D printers nor know how to use them. Real Jerry Can has a spring that holds the metal cap on tightly.
This is the exact same problem I ran into last week. Ordered some replacement caps off Amazon, CM Concepts and made in USA. Put them on and they leaked like crazy. What a disappointment. Will check out the metal caps you referenced below. How have your caps worked so far? Hope you found a easy solution. ETA: Only had the gas cans about a year and a half and opened the cans a few times to let the can vent due to changing temps.
I have an older 5 gal. plastic model 4230 that is coming apart at the seam below the handle and leaks everytime I move it. I will now NEVER purchase any more garbage from Midwest Can Company....JUNK!
Is it possible to have excessive pressure due to insufficient air volume? Recently, I've learned that I am not suppose to fill up the container to the brim, which I usually do.
leave air space when you fill them up but not to the brim. storage of modern gas add in stabile and de water chems to the mix. leave air space tighten a metal cap tight. place in a dry cool area. good for a decade.
not everybody out in the real world is a computer geek. let alone has the money or space for a plastic printer. how about a metal cap that will never fail. .
Thank you for the great idea and the 3D printer files!
thank you so much, you've helped me to solve a work problem in a sec...🙏🙏🙏🙏

Thanks great info
Some items at Harbor freight are good, but you take your chances on other things. I'll stick with real Jerry cans with the metal fixture/spout.

Thats a good idea.
Thats why i don't use metal gas cans!...never had any problems with plastic!

I need to buy a couple of those.
What exact 3D Printer do you use? Excellent idea and video!

@@737mechanic thanks very much, love your videos!
Is it possible to have excessive pressure due to insufficient air volume? Recently, I've learned that I am not suppose to fill up the container to the brim, which I usually do.
its possible, but even if you fill it up to the brim, there is still a slight air cavity that can never be fully filled.
leave air space when you fill them up but not to the brim.
storage of modern gas add in stabile and de water chems to the mix. leave air space tighten a metal cap tight. place in a dry cool area. good for a decade.
@737mechanic, how did you put that nipple on the back of your can? I have two of the same can, and that fluffing is getting OLD.
I drilled a hole and used a piece of wire to fish it through and put the nut on it.
What filiment did you use?
I used PLA+ for the cap and PTU for that gasket.
@@737mechanic thanks
MINE LEAKED AT THE BOTTOM IN 1 YR
Did it rust, crack, or what?
@737mechanic do not see rust . The Crack must be small because I cannot see it .
Is there a metal alternative to use as a cap?
There is this one.
amzn.to/3LcvKPR
Or this one.

not everybody out in the real world is a computer geek. let alone has the money or space for a plastic printer.
