I took my drivers license test in a 1975 Town Car at the age of 16. The tester / instructor asked me if I could parallel park the car. I asked her I would try if she would parallel park it first. She laughed and checked the park as a pass. Although this car was HUGE, it was a very easy car to drive. The power steering was like butter. I was always shocked at how fast you could turn onto a street with just one finger. The ride on the highway was like riding on air. My Dad had a 1977 Grand Marque that was his company car. @Keith I was born in 1982 and I'd just as soon hear it over the stuff in commercials today. I think it's calming and soothing, frankly! Even jazz instrumentals would match cars like these.
Magnificent Automobiles. Young people who have never driven one have no idea how well these cars ride or how comfortable they are. Suv's and pick-ups are big but ride like crap compared to these. Leather seats filled with cement and after 2 hours you get out and you need a Chiropractor.
We had a 73 as our family car my dad loved that thing, that was when he didn't have it up on jacks stands or literally have to climb into the engine compartment to work on it. It was cool for long trips in that it rode like a cloud. it was also tobacco friendly as every seat had an ashtray an lighter. However, no one in my family smoked.
I own a 72 continental, in triple black, 61000 original miles and stored for many years, all original, love these big lincolns, thanks for posting this commercial :)
Gosh these car's were really luxurious and stylish for their day! Thought to the finer details of trim and interior fittings that you just do not see today.. a true luxury car for the times :)
Incredible! I own a 1977 - same as this car but different front grille. I love the elegant music in this ad. I would love to get the original 16mm film reel of this.
@kylekohberger9663 They looked (and STILL look) better than what pass for cars today (the Town Car is my favorite model in this video though not necessarily the color combination; with that tan vinyl roof and interior, I'd have preferred the dark brown paint, the color of that standard Continental)!
I’ve been across America as a kid on vacation in my father’s blue 75’ Lincoln land yacht “what a great car & super comfortable”. These big cars are still more comfortable than anything today and with a 400 or 460 4 barrel they could move too.
Once was fortunate enough to have a 78 Town Coupe. Ultimate OTT excessive luxury on the GRAND scale. Never should have let it go. 89 Town Car Signature was another beautiful vehicle on a slightly smaller scale. Currently have beautiful low mileage 2007 Signature Limited. Last generation of REAL American 🇺🇸 luxury. This one will literally carry me to my grave!
Thank complacency, goin on right today. Japan took an American car and not only made it burn cleaner, but increased the gas mileage. Not a culture of excellence here. Profit, profit, profit.
How times have changed...Luxury used to be about serenity, comfort and style. Today, it's all about "performance." Unfortunately, the age of elegance is behind us and will never return. Welcome to the vulgar and savage "future" we were all so excited about not long ago.
I think it's also due to a shift in "aspirational aesthetics." Meaning people want flash and dash now rather than class. Who knows anything about classiness anymore? I think it's partly due to the rise of "new money" versus "old money." There's usually a pretty big difference between people who were born into money versus people who "made it." The latter are vulgar and have a huge desire to be noticed and they love new, stupid novelties because it's something they can use to show off with.

StrongEnough78 I have a 77 Town Car and yes, those seats are like sitting on a comfy couch. The seats with the springs in them and the comfy Lincoln ride is like floating on a cloud.
@ddoyle11 I know what you mean! While these cars were manufactured before my lifetime (I was born in 1982), had I been around back then, had the financial wherewithal and was looking to buy a new 1975 Lincoln, I would've special ordered a Continental Sedan with the Town Car package w/ the split bench w/ Media Velour, presumably about $665.62 extra (that was the '74 price; possibly, it didn't change for '75), in Silver Blue Diamond Fire Metallic (order code=3R), a $167.00 option, w/Dark Blue Custom Pin Stripe (order code=4), Dark Blue full vinyl roof (order code=FB; the 'F' indicated a full vinyl roof while 'L' indicated the landau version, the first season it was available!) and Dark Blue Media Velour (order code=JB; Did you know that, beginning with the '74 Town Car and Town Coupe, the velour was available ONLY with the Twin Comfort Lounge Seats option? In my opinion, it would've been worth the extra money for such practical comfort.). The aforementioned color combination is not the only one I like, but it's one of my favorites. Among other options I would've gotten would be the 4-wheel disc brakes (wise idea from the manufacturer!) not only for the convenience but, most importantly, the safety! Not to mention, in my experience, disc brakes are not only safer than drum brakes (yes, I've driven all 4 drum brakes too!), the discs are also MUCH EASIER to work on! MUCH MORE straightforward design! Back to the velour seats, another feature I like about them is the pique stitching between the head restraints and the pillow on the back rest and above the latter on the seatback. If you've noticed, it appears Lincoln decided to copy the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham by not only using the wreath around the Lincoln star (I mean, think about it, Lincoln matching the Town Car with Cadillac's Fleetwood in a subtle way!) but also, with the roof restyling for 1975, you can also tell they loosely modeled the look after the 1971-1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham models (especially the center pillar)! I'm also a fan of the '71-'76 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham too! Oh, if you want to know where I got the color and upholstery codes information, check out lincolnlandinc.com.
In the 70s everything was cheap and flimsy compared to the past. Nowadays stuff is made SO crappily that that stuff from the 70s looks good. In the 70s we were in a huge economic downturn. Everyone took shortcuts on making everything. Now we just ship everything in from china. A word of advice- buy American made. Invest in this great country.
That's right. These Lincolns and the Cadillacs of the 70s had far less quality in the interior and paint and body than the 60s. Engine durability was good though in most .
@Jon O I'm 39 and, my whole life, I never understood the hype with foreign cars. American are the ONLY kind of cars and/or trucks I've ever owned or even want to!
This, the 1941 Lincoln, and the Kennedy Lincoln were the best looking cars the brand ever offered. That said, this sales pitch is pretty hokey as it focuses on 'fake' things like vinyl, applique, etc. when it should have talked more about ride, features (power everything), and so on.
Mustangs/Camaros/Chargers are everywhere and such a borefest. Besides, modern cars handle better, have more power, get better fuel mileage, and are more comfortable. However, show me a vehicle today that has the comfort and smooth ride of these monstrosities. These enormous large barges are where it's at!
No way they could make a car like this today. Nowadays cars are absolutely ass dirt ugly. This car is beautiful beyond belief. Times changed for the worse.
In my opinion, from 75-79, the Lincoln Continental was the best america full size luxury car you could buy. First of all it was the last true full sized luxury car. Secondly the materials used are of higher quality and simply look better than those used in Imperial and Cadillac. Another reason is that despite the incredible unique appearance, under the hood the Continental had many interchangeable parts with other ford products. Makes maintainence and repair far easier than a car with unique parts. Steering wheel is out of a ford pickup, transmission is a c6, 400 engine from the cleveland engine family etc. Now some people say that these cars are slow and can not accelerate like a muscle car, A fine car like this was never intended to be driven like that. This is a car meant to be driven gracefully, cruising along at 55 on the interstate in silence and with no feeling of movement. Gliding around town in comfort and style. These cars were above Cadillac and Imperial, they were more comparable to Mercedes Benz, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Jaguar etc.
My dad bought a new '76 4 door town car for $10,000 cash. Black with red velour interior. He asked one of his friends what he thought, and the guy said it was really nice, but looked like a New Orleans whore house. I really loved that car.

chieftp - yep...and falling apart, with the interior smelling like a blunt and spilled liquor..
And it wasn't front wheel drive
My dad was an executive with Ford in the 50s 60s and 70s, and he said that those tacky styling touches had Lee Iacocca written ALL over them!
Roger E Well that's no surprise since he later went on to grace us all with the presence of those tacky K-Cars..lol! My grandfather was an executive with GM during the same period and he had some funny stories as well. : )
I wish they went back to this but I wouldn’t even wanna on ow what price they would put it lol
