      Stu Stewart beat them in fantastic style. So happens they were the same horses he had been beating over and over again. Straight 3yos. It is kind of like the New England patriots playing Cleveland Browns every time they play. A great horse absolutely. The greatest? Not in my opinion. How about Kelso? Horse of the year 5 years in a row. That is more impressive than beating the same ole horses you beat numerous times before, even if it were by 31 lengths.

      No horse that has ever lived would have beaten Arkle in the 1965 Gold Cup at Sandown. He smashed the course record by 17 seconds....a record that still stands 54 years on....a record that will Never be broken; because the horse that beats the time......will not be carrying within half a stone of what Arkle carried.

    Carbine. He probably appears in the pedigree of most if not all of these horses. Dragged the grandstand (66kg/145lbs) to victory over 38 other competitors in 1890 Melbourne Cup, setting a new record, and carrying 24kg/53lbs more than the second placed horse. Outstanding race record. 43 starts for 33 wins, 6 seconds, 3 thirds. Unplaced once due to injury.
    Worth looking up. He was truly great.

  • @robertascani9143
    @robertascani9143 8 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    Sorry, but any 10 best list without Seattle Slew is flawed. He was a freak of nature and a truly GREAT racehorse. The only horse to win the Triple Crown undefeated and almost died over the winter right after of a blood infection, then comes back as a 4 year old and wins the Marlboro Cup in just 2/5s of a second over the world record set by Secretariat. He beat Affirmed in that race by 3 lengths who happens to be on this list. Why? I have no idea. Affirmed doesn't belong in a top 10 list. Slew's Jockey Club Gold Cup (2nd by a nose) is one of the greatest performances ever. I guess I can rest my case....

      Phar Lap was #5 on the list

    • @sl7293
      @sl7293 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lists like this are totally subjective. So is your claim that the list is flawed because it excludes Slew. Every horse has their pluses and minuses. Slew's negatives include the fact that he was a fragile horse whose resume was thin. He only won 14 races running at age 2, 3, and 4. Citation won 19 races as 3 year old alone. In his only race after the Triple Crown, Slew got crushed by J.O. Tobin and then they rested him for the remainder of the season. Running a rigorous schedule, which would have him run continuously for many months after the TC, was too much for Slew. He couldn't take it. However that was certainly not the case for horses like Round Table, Citation, Buckpasser, or Damascus who ran races constantly and relentlessly. Slew only won two Grade 1 races after his triple crown campaign and those occurred at the age 4.
      In an era where Forego was winning races carrying huge weight, Slew's connections avoided running him in races where he might be assigned big weight as if it was the plague. The only time he carried over 130 pounds was in the Grade 3 Stuyvesant where he raced against a bunch of nobodies. Slew's victory in the Marlboro Cup in the time of 1:45.8 was certainly a fine performance, but he only carried 128 pounds. Two years earlier on the same track, Forego also won in the time of 1:45.8, but he was carrying 135 pounds. Sure Slew's 2:00 for 1 1/4 miles on a fast track, carrying 126 pounds, was a good performance. However, Forego ran the same time, two years earlier, on the same track, but he was carrying 137 pounds in the slop. When you compare Slew's achievements to those of other horses, there is nothing that conclusively shows that he belongs on a top 10 list or that horses like Citation, Forego, Native Dancer, Count Fleet, Damascus, Buckpasser, Spectacular Bid, Bold Ruler, Swaps etc. etc. do not.

He won almost all the races he ran for and won the Kentucky Derby. He also won the Triple Crown. He ran over his career ran into over $ 1 million and then finished his journey through an amazing life died the 8 respondent in August 1970. He was then 25 years. So glad you mentioned Phar Lap and Affirmed ! Yes, Sham was a great horse; just not up against God's Horse Secretariat. No one has ever beaten his Belmont time and more than likely no one will or if they should be able to they won't win it by 31+ lengths. Affirmed and Big Red (Secretariat) were such beautiful reds. I do think Zenyatta should also be on this list! She was 17.1 hands high and won races! Biggest horse I raced was a Quarter Horse/Appaloosa that was 17.4 hands high and he weighed 1,800 pounds when I got the job of helping him to get weight off. His girth was insane and the only reason I got to be the one to ride him daily is that I was a gymnast and could have my legs that far apart with killing me and ironically I rode him side saddle sometime because my legs did get tired. NO, he wasn't a racehorse like a pro...but that boy could run like the wind once I got his weight down he could outrun any of the horses at the ranch/lodge or any other takers in the area!

I think my loyalty and love for Secretariat is so strong because I watched him race with my dad who was dying. He lived long enough to see the Belmont; but that would be one of the last things were I got to be mostly alone and screaming at the top of our lungs when Secretariat was coming down the track just flying (my 6 brothers never watched racing) with my dad before his multiple times going into the hospital. The mighty Forego - did any other horse ever consistently win while carrying as much weight? He was phenomenal. Don't remember seeing Citation on here - won the Jersey Stakes in between running the Preakness and Belmont. What horse today could do that? And Count Fleet did the same thing, winning the Withers, and then winning the Belmont by 25 lengths, and he may have raced the Derby and Belmont while injured.

    • @waynespaeth9061

      There are 3 factors that make Forego's accomplishments extra special: 1- he had 3 bad legs for a good portion of his career which required constant hosing to reduce inflammation; 2 - he often carried very high weights as much as 137 lbs.; and 3 - he usually preferred running on the far outside which meant he had to cover more distance than horses running next to the rail. He won most of his races on a combination of raw power and sheer determination. My dream matchup would be a match race between Forego and Secretariat at Belmont as 4 year olds with Forego having 4 good legs and no weight handicap. That would have been something to see.

However, I believe that if Man o’ War met Secretariat when both were at their best, Secretariat would have won. But remember this: both horses lived 50 years apart. Both retired at 3, while the peak in the average racehorse’s career is 5. Anything could have happened in that time. Secretariat might have never gotten better, while Man o’ War did. Or vice versa. Come on that's nonsense. Trainers in this part of the world train horses DIFFERENTLY to Europe. Trainers here prefer to race their horses into fitness much more than endless amounts of slow work. Why is that difficult to grasp ? There are not that many races around for stayers and that is the primary reason you see them bob up in 7f and 8f races early in their preps. Some of the very good horses can win them too. They are racehorses not museum exhibits. Trainers don't run their horses in unsuitable races to get a low weight in the Melbourne Cup. That is nonsense. You should make yourself aware of the qualifying conditions of the Melbourne Cup. The TOP 24 horses IN THE WEIGHTS, who are either qualified (in previous year by winning or placing in a Group race at 2300m or beyond or run 4th or 5th in a Group race in which horses older than 3 could run, again at 2300m or beyond - horses who have qualified by running 4th or 5th rarely make the field as they don't get enough weight) or are exempt from the ballot having won one of the qualifying races, such as a Cox Plate, Sydney Cup, an Arc, Sheema Classic etc. Previous placed runs in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup can also qualify you. There are 4 races which ensure its winners direct passage into the Melbourne Cup of that same year. The winners of the Lexus Stakes, run 3 days before the Cup (Example: Signoff earned a spot in the 2014 Melbourne Cup by winning the 2014 Lexus Stakes. He was weighted 6.5kg under WFA (51.5kg) after receiving a 1kg penalty for his win on the Saturday, but was automatically elevated into the race. He finished fourth) as well as the Caulfield Cup, the Cox Plate and as of 2015, The Bart Cummings (a 2500m Group 3 race run in early October) receive a ‘free pass’ to the Melbourne Cup. They are automatically included at the top of the ballot order, regardless of what weight they have already been allotted. The 2500m Bart Cummings was the race last year's Cup winner Almandin WON to qualify. Had Alamndin not won it's very likely he would have missed out on a Melbourne Cup start, unless he won the Lexus Stks (but he would have also received a weight penalty) or somehow qualified to run in the Caulfield Cup and won it (again receiving a weight penalty) or placed and sneaking in as one of the top 24 weighted horses who were qualified. The truth is it's very hard to qualify AND have a light weight unless you WIN one of the qualifying races that exempts you from the ballot. If you win one of the qualifying races you deserve to be in the final 24 horse field

    • @AnotherFastnet70
      @AnotherFastnet70 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is nonsense. Our stayers are trained differently. They are in shorter races to keep them sharp so they retain a turn of foot. We have lots of horses who perform over a variety of distances. Some of the more notable ones in the last 30 - 40 years include Kingston Town, Red Anchor, More Joyous, Saintly, Makybe Diva, Winx Sunline, Northerly, Better Loosen Up etc etc. Look at Mahogany......he won Australia's 2 biggest Derbies by big margins and he won Australia's premier 5f Grp1 sprint TWICE. You reckon he cheapened that race ? He was also a narrow 2nd in a Cox Plate to a champion 3yo who was getting 20lbs off him at WFA. Look At Shaftesbury Avenue. He won Australia's premier 5f Grp1, Australia's premier 6f Gro1 handicap as well as Grp1's at 8f, 10f and was runner up in a Japan Cup at 12f. You never see it because your trainers are far too preoccupied with maintaining a winning streak at a set distance, usually beating the same horses, so they can then be hailed at stud. Our trainers are more in the business of winning races. BOTH are perfectly satisfactory options. Many of your very good horses don't even race on past their 3yo year. How do we even know if the best bloodlines are being carried on from stallions who only raced up until 3yo ? They simply may have been more precocious than there opposition at that age. Others may turn out to be much better as older horses. Please, don't ever talk about throwing horses into races with no chance. You have pacemakers orchestrating all your Grp1 races. Our Grp1 horses do their own work. They are now 'towed' into their races by their pacemaker. That's why it's harder to maintain such a big unbeaten run. When we do get a horse with a big winning streak that includes many Grp1's it's time to sit up and take notice.You have stablemates deliberately avoiding each other so one doesn't beat the other. And I said "slow work" not "slow runs". Runs = races. Work = training.

      I'm TELLING you Kingston Town would have destroyed any horse over there from 6f - 12f. That I am as certain of as I can be. The track is not meant to be challenging. The track is meant to be fair. The opposition horses are the challenge first and foremost, followed by the distance and much less ground conditions Should have nothing to do with the track configuration. A 1200m race should feel like a 1200m race. not a 1400m - 1600m race because it's up the side of a hill. That's why we have races over varying distances. Class horses can win over a range of distances. The late great Colin Hayes trained Jeune to win a 7f Grp1 C F Orr Stks 1st up in his autumn campaign after he won a Melbourne Cup at 2 miles. He did the same thing with At Talaq. Now that's a training feat. Bart Cummings did it with Saintly a well. He was a Melbourne Cup winner and a Cox Plate winner. That's what separates class horses/trainers from the rest. You can keep mentioning trainers cheating to get a winnable weight in a Melbourne Cup but 160 years of history suggests you are the deluded one. Prove it. Surely you can give me 5 or 10 horses out of 160 where their trainer "cheated" so as to give them a winnable weight. I've already explained the conditions of getting into the race. The HIGHEST weighted runners get in !!!! So to manoeuvre your runner to get into a Melbourne Cup with a low weight is fraught with danger and smacks of arrogance. You could count on 1 hand the amount of trainers who KNEW they had the winner of a Melbourne Cup before it actually happened

      "The Irish Champion Stakes, which has been frequently rated in the top 5 world best turf races each year (including last year as The best top rated turf race- or laughably jointed best turf horse to Cox Plate - a fucking political decision and no more when you look at ratings and the amount of Group 1 winners or lack thereof) is up there." lol political decision ? On what count ? It was rated that way as there was a superstar in it. One that is superior to EVERY European middle distance horse !!"As for other Europe trainers........go read the resume of both Aidan O'Brien and Sir Michael Stoute and their performances on the world stage from the US, to Dubai, to Japan, and recently Australia ". Of course European trainers travel their horses. It costs money to train them and the money available in Europe is ordinary at best."Racing is not for the chumps with more money than sense in Europe! The real money is made in the stud. No wonder it is European based owners that are dominating the breeding Industry." Are you kidding me. LESS than 1% of every horse that is bred goes onto become a commercially viable stallion. LESS than 1% !!!! There must be a lot of broke arse breeders/owners in Europe. Oh wait, there's fuck all owners that were not born with a silver spoon in their mouth. What a shit industry. Dominated by a few. Ours in vibrant with mass participation, mainstream media coverage, more horses, more races, more racetracks, more stakemoney. Our stakemoney is THE reason we have mass participation, including this little black duck. Imagine going to the yearling sales knowing that you have a LESS than 1% chance of buying a horse who is going to go on and become a commercially viable stallion. No thanks.

      "granted, his trainer is brutal, just flogs his horses in handicaps at 2 years, gives them no time to grow and develop". He's now grown, mature and developed. Probably why we are seeing the best of him but we'll overlook that right. Minding was winning fillies races, not open class Grp1's. There's a massive difference. Next thing you'll be telling me Zenyatta was a better horse at her distances than what Black Caviar was at hers. Why do you think Highland Reel flopped in the ICS ? Probably the same reason he flopped in the Sheema Classic. Safe to say he needs good or firm ground to show his best. He's adept at both 10f and 12f when he gets good or firm ground and let's face it, many horses are in that same boat. He got those conditions in the Cox Plate. He also got a fast pace (track and race record), which surely helps a horse who's just as good at 12f over horses who don't get 12f. So he had everything to suit that day and Winx handed him his arse to the tune of 6l. Now Highland Reel didn't run badly as he still ran 3rd. It's just that Winx is clearly a superior animal. If that wasn't enough she won the Doncaster and then the Cox Plate the following year by even further and has put together a streak of 17 straight wins over a range of distances.. When a horse does that believe me you sit up and take notice. Yankee Rose is only lightly raced. Already a Grp1 winner at 2yo and 3yo and a Cox Plate placegetter as a 3yo filly. Surround was the last 3yo filly to win that race and that was in 1976. The Oaks was a bridge too far at 12.5f. She's bred to be a miler. Her sire was a Grp1 mile winner. So it's fair to say she's in the mould of a Sunline, More Joyous and even Winx. Milers who can get 10f. Of course she still has much to do to get to the level of those horses. She's been given time after her tough spring campaign so that should stand her in good stead. The peak performance of Winx pushed up the rating of the Cox Plate.

    Where is Seattle Slew ?? has to be one of the top 3 horses of all time. Slew was a
    beast and came into the first leg of the Triple Crown, at the Kentucky Derby, and
    was undefeated, and won his next 3 races, Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and the
    Belmont. Slew had great character and great heart to win. Also you have Affirmed
    on this list, and he was a Triple Crown winner, but Slew beat him 2 times, and quite
    easily. When Slew beat Affimed his time was only 2/5ths of a second, off the great
    Secretariat's winning time for the same distance that Secretariat ran at the Derby.
    Slew is a Top 3 horse of all time, and if he would have raced Secretariat, I would
    bet he'd win at least one of the races between the Kentucky Derby, or Preakness,
    and both horses would have been neck and neck at the finish line.
    In the Belmont, I don't believe Slew would have been able to keep up with Secretariat,
    as that was a longer distance, and Secretariat's heart weighed 22 lbs, and that gave
    him a big advantage, to pump a lot of blood. Average weight is 12-14 ponds. No
    matter what Seattle Slew was a great one, and should be in the Top 3 on this list, as
    that horse had game. He would even prance for the fans before a race.

The truly fastest hores in histrory have seep (Nearco) and endurance (Princepuillo with the oversized hearts). Secretariat, Seattle Slew, AP Indy, Sham, Zenyatta, California Chrome, Cigar, Winx, American Pharoah and Makybe Diva are just an examples). Some have all 3. Native dancer especially with Nearco accounts for almost all derby triple crown winners since the 80's. Native Dancer also comes with a curse for weak leg runners. Secretariat and the two other TC greats of the 70s up there with Man O War and Dr Fager and Spectacular Bid. Although not top 10, American Pharoah as a 21st century racer is up there around 15 to 25 probably.

      That's right, where's Zenyatta, she's got to be #8 or #9 , no question...she reminds me in some ways of Ruffian, obviously totally different racing styles, Ruffian a front runner & Zenyatta a closer....problem would have been, when Zenyatta coming around Top of the stretch & out-racing everyone badly down the stretch, she's still 3-4 Lengths Behind Ruffian, but so wat ONLY 1 horse in Racing History ahead of Ruffian and thats Secretariat by a length, breaking another record.....The next 5 , 11-15 has to have: Rachel Alexandra, Risen Star, Lady's Secret, Genuine Risk & Silver Charm (1997)....wat about Serena's Song

    Ok, I will agree that Sham was a great horse, born in the wrong year but lets not forget why his last race was the Belmont Stakes and he was retired afterwards. He would have broken the previous Preakness record and been very close to Northern Dancer’s Derby record but he broke down in the Belmont and finished last, a very long way off the record time.

When he was weighted 68kgs in the 1932 Melbourne Cup, only Carbine & Bernborough had been lofted with the same weight. Both did not run. Phar Lap led into the straight, before finishing 8th. The horse that won, carried just 43.54kg! Nowadays, they are weight 51-54kgs. Would be like Maykbe Diva carrying 78.5kgs. Phar Lap could have easily won the 1929-1931 Melbourne Cups, much suspicion in the 1929 3rd placing. Equal 1st Group 1 wins will Tulloch on 27. All achieved at his young age of 5 1/2. Best was yet to come. Secretariat was faster, but Phar Lap was used to heavy weights. Would have been a close, classic race. I'd back The Red Terror.

Much suspicion & punters lost £1milion pounds apparently. He won in 1930, carrying 62.5kgs. The 1931 Melbourne Cup, he carried 68kgs. Only Carbine had won with such a load, 66kgs in 1890. Phar Lap led into the straight before finishing 8th. The winner, White Nose carried just 43.5kgs. Phar Lap's correct weight for age should have been mid 50's. It'd be like Maykbe Diva carrying 78.5kgs. His Agua Caliente win in 1932, breaking the race record, 7 races held that day, after a massive boat trip & nearly lame from a split hoof, which bled during the race is astonishing. Came from last to 1st in the back section of the track, had a breather & when challenged by Reville Boy, he pulled away again to win. Phar Lap could not be left out of any greatest horse discussion. I think Man O'War was the greatest of all. And he deserves his title as the Horse of the century. Yes Secretariat broke records on triple crown races, but circumstances allowed him to run faster. He wasn't carrying much of a weight and his shoes were light weight, while Man O'War has steel ones. You can't say one car is faster when its laptime is in clear weather while other car had a rainy day.

He finished last in the Belmont Stakes and had only 5 victories in 13 starts in his career. Sham also lost 5 races to horses not named Secretariat in races where Secretariat was not entered. I don't see why two excellent efforts in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, races which he lost, qualifies Sham as the 8th best horse of all time.

      @jamesgilford157 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I rooted for Sham in the triple crown races, but to this day don't know why he is treated as an all-time great. 5/13 is good but certainly not great and not a "sure triple crown winner" if Secretariat hadn't run. I also admire Seabiscuit, but most people only know him because of the very inaccurate movie. A very gritty, good horse, but nowhere near a top ten all-time horse. So very few people today know anything about horses prior to 1973 or from Europe, making their lists less than compelling. These videos would be much better I think if they were presented as, "these are my all-time top favorite horses."

      I do agree with Frankel being an outstanding horse and yes possibly the equivalent of others mentioned - not the original list - rather horses nominated by replyers. The problem with Frankel being claimed as the best of all time is that English racing is very different to other countries. The tracks are exceedingly different in surface (firm to slow conditions), pacemakers were used in most of his races, banned in Australia. This makes assessing his competitiveness on race times difficult. If he ran those times in Australian Group1 races he would have been beaten decisively. Only his 22 August 2012, International Stakes at York came close to an Australian track record.
      So to get an idea of the difficulty in race times comparison see Black Caviar. She wins over 6F/1200M in Adelaide in 1:10:32 and then next runs same distance at Ascot, England in 1:14:10 and not ridden out the last 50 metres. that's the equivalent of 18+ lengths difference. An unsolvable comparison.

      +Cerrie Lang Black Caviar 15 group ones including one at Ascot, and undefeated. Would be hard to see anyone defeating Frankel too. Not completing discounting US horses (American Pharoah was a freak as one example) but with their use of Lasix and their depth in the fields as well as the tracks, its pretty hard to measure them up against the rest of the world. Especially if they don't travel. UK superstars generally race throughout Europe and at the Breeders Cup, Aus champion horses prepared to test themselves in Hong Kong and Ascot every year. Not many succeed but the ones who do make it pretty hard for critics to discount them as anything but champions- this is what American horses need to do.

    • @jacknolan171
      @jacknolan171 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    A very interesting list. I would differ in my opinion in many ways I'm sure. The Sham choice caught my eye. I've said many times that if Secretariat hadn't been there, Sham would have taken the Triple Crown. My top choice would be Kelso, because of his endurance and will to win, which I value more than anything. For that reason, Forego would also be quite high in my top 10. Secretariat sulked too often, it seemed. He had all the ability in the world, but seemed to stop trying if things weren't going his way. Difficult to say, because I loved him and missed much of his Belmont Stakes stretch run because I couldn't wipe the tears from my eyes quickly enough.

    Dr. Fage is the only horse to win 4 separate divisions of 'Horse Of The Year' in
    one season, 1968, when he averaged carrying 134 lbs per race and won the
    Sprint Championship (Winning the 7 furlong Vosburgh in 120.1 while carrying
    139 lbs. He defeated the top grass horses in an international field, on a wet
    grass carrying 134 lbs, which is a surface he had never run on before. In addition
    he 'of course' won handicap horse of the year as well as overall horse of the year.
    Secretariat couldn't win on grass, nor was he able to beat a $15,000 'claimer' named
    Onion, or a $40,000 allowance horse named Prove Out. When he won The Belmont
    the field had only one quality opponent named Sham, who he defeated by an average
    of only two lengths in the 'Derby' and 'Preakness'. It's never mentioned that Sham broke
    down during the running of the Belmont and his trainer attributed it to the concrete hard
    surface that Penny Tweedy pressured officials to institute in order to maximize running
    time. She actually got the officials at The Preakness to change the final time which is an
    outrage. Michael Venezia, a regular rider in NY, told me that Secretariat's time of 2.24 is
    a joke because of the track condition. When he ran at Arlington Park. carrying 126 lbs,
    he was defeated by Prove out while his finishing time was 135.2 for the mile. Dr. Fager
    carried 134 lbs at Arlington and won his mile race in 132.1, even though he was eased
    up at the end of his 10 length victory. That's 16 lengths faster than Secretariat and was a
    World Record. Had Secretariat run against Dr. Fager in a match race he would have been
    defeated by Dr. Fager. Secretariat even lost to his stable mate Riva Ridge in a race just
    prior to the Derby. He also was defeated by Fort Marcy in a distance race on grass, and
    was also beaten at 6 furlongs in the first race of his career. How people can make so much
    about one race, on a surface that was not normal due to its being packed down like hard
    concrete, is beyond obscene. Truly great horses can be beaten....but not by $15,000
    claiming, or $40,000 allowance horses. Examine all the truly great horses and see that if
    they lost an occasional race, it was against top competition, and not 'repeatedly' by 'stiffs'.
