      Pretty casual thing to say after Chernobyl and Fukushima. The cost of development cannot be the destruction of future generations. Just remember this : One event of the scale of Chernobyl and most of India will become barren uninhabitable land for millenia.

If some bald journo clown is gonna convince you then might as well put 100 reactors in New Delhi and light up the whole nation.

    • @shiveshsingh3169
      @shiveshsingh3169 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EdilbertFernando No one is denying the existence of the exclusion zone and the effect it has had. But it also represents the WORST case of nuclear meltdown. The Soviet Union was utterly incompetent in its operation even before the disaster, and was equally bad after the disaster itself. Japan on the other hand managed the situation FAR more adeptly and their reactors didn't go the Soviet way. Perhaps that would explain the significantly reduced damages to both humans and the surrounding.
      I am not saying that Nuclear Reactors should be the only way to power our world, but it is quite clearly one of the best ways to make energy transition happen with the least long term effects on human health on a wider scale. That would also mean that there should be absolutely strict safety and containment measures in place. No compromises on that. But blind rejection of nuclear power is plainly stupid. And btw, current reactors use Uranium, which is responsible the issues of radioactivity, but Thorium based reactors are far moe safer than Uranium ones and India has one of world's largest reserves of Thorium. The 3 stage nuclear policy also focuses on Thorium based plants.
      And lastly, your Original comment said how just _one_ bad accident would render _most_ of India uninhabitable. THAT'S the reason I said it was fear mongering, since the past events have shown how limited the impact of isolated accidents are in the wider context.

    Monsanto style hybridization that requires a commitment to monoculture, ever increasing use of fertilizer and high water requirements, have driven farmers of Punjab and haryana into heavy debt. The farmers of the South that rejected hybridization have native rice varieties that are less costly to grow and they don't need to buy seed every year either. This mustard may well not have these issues. But we shouldn't blindly accept tech as, just as we shouldn't blindly reject it.

      @@Kamamura2 That's true, but also, how do we recognize that the opponents of a technology are being unreasonable? There must be a better way than name-calling, but nothing seems to work. Example, when you do scientific experiments to prove safety (or discover dangers), the "activists" tear up the test plots. Or they make up stories. After almost twenty years of GMO cotton, the "activists" still claim that it is driving Indian farmers to commit suicide because of crop failures.

    Not all concerns with GM are unfounded. Monoculture and lack of diversity and hence resilience, the IP milked for money by in the 2 or 3 hybrid seed companies world wide are genuine concerns. Not all technology is bad, nor is all of it good. Glad to see Indian expertise in this important area. Let's hope we are sensible about it.

    • @charlesmrader
      @charlesmrader ปีที่แล้ว

      What you call monoculture was the most common way to grow crops for lifetimes before there were any genetically modified crops, before we even knew that genes were made of desoxyribonucleic acids. There is nothing about genetically modified crops that requires that they be grown in monocultures.
      Growing a lot of the same crop in one swath is more efficient as a means of mass production. But it does have its disadvantages. I'm sure you can explain them. A middle ground that farmers have taken for centuries is to grow two or three different crops, monoculture for each crop, but switching to another crop in another season.

      India is importing so much Soybean, Maise, Corn and all other food items in India.
      Who is taking care that these are not GM ?
      We know for sure that tobacco causes cancer . How about ban on it first?
      Cigarette, Gutkha and what not should be banned right?
      But our government ban electric cigarette just to safeguard tobacco industry (Tax).
      One should understand that we Indian farmers has to compete with world for our products.
      Or atleast make India closed economy for food so that Indian farmers will have fair chance to survive.

    • @charlesmrader
      @charlesmrader ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh dear, what utter nonsense. The GM mustard is an innovation of India and it will mean India will be licensing its patents to others. Pental's mustard makes it possible for breeders to easily develop many varieties of mustard, a super valuable trait.
      As to the cancers caused by other GMO foods, that is curiously found only by people against GMO food to begin with. That makes me very suspicious. When people without a prior belief in the horribleness of GMO food try to reproduce that data, they fail. More generally, the United States grows and eats way more GMO food than any other country does, and keeps records of cases of cancer year by year. This was begun in 1975. The age adjusted incidence of cancer per 100,000 people in 1975 increased rather sharply year after year until 1992, then it began to decrease year after year, and over the entire time that GMO food has existed, total cancer rates have decreased rather steadily. The anti-GMO talking points routinely say that cancer rates are "exploding" which is simply not true at all.

    Being cautious is good but being extra cautious to the point of inaction and not doing anything and saying we are exceptional and why should we care about the world is stupidly of the highest order.
    We are in India already investing a lot in productivity improvemnts in agriculture via startups that are using big data to predict rainfall patterns and other important KPI for crops and fisheries so what we need to change is the source to make these efforts more foolproof

    As a Master of plant Genetics, I was disappointed by the state of Agriculture research and the activism which paints everyone of us as corporate stooges. We took this career to make a difference or else we could apply the same knowledge and would have been settled for live. Anyway that ship has sailed and I moved out of India now to follow my passion and get the respect we deserve to do our science.

      Sir, do you realise though how much suffering our future generations will go through with these GMO's ? To be frank GMO's should be banned. Do not make common man a scapegoat by buying them into the idea of making country self reliant in oil production. Anything which is not in it's true form is not compatabile with humans and other living creatures and over next 30-50 years our future generations as to go through a lot of suffering not knowing what the real cause of their suffering is. I sincerely request Scientists and Prime Minister Modi to make decisions in the current time based on far thinking but not instincts.

    Also, can’t help but notice the fact that a news such as this, fundamental and important, has 1/4 - 1/2 the comments/views compared to a CTC on politics!!!
    Sad, but that’s the reality we need to deal with. Guess, All important stuff happens silently, in the background.

    India should stop fighting shy of GM Crops. With fast growing population, traditional Indian agriculture can’t continue to provide food security .

    GM can be used to produce cotton, sugar cane for making industrial fuel production etc. to enhance the economy. Don't use for edible oil or food. Oil seed can be produced for industrial purpose as lubricants and other non eateries essential materials.

    India spends lot of foreign exchange on import of oil, Coconut oil is a good alternative for cooking oil presently used mainly in Kerala, other places not popular because of some concerns and social acceptability, All southern states beside eastern states grow coconut widely and farmers are struggling to get good prices , the farms are also have new disease and reduced yields, changed life style usage of this oils shall help farmers and reduced foreign flow, governments & Media should do something on this
