Thank you so much. I knew how to replace but didn’t know I had to twist the aluminum balance to the right!

My window shoe broke. Do you have a video how to change that?

Update: On the second set I installed I preloaded two turns tor the right, installed window and tested, raised the window and it stayed up. closed the window and noticed there was a gap at the bottom. Gently closed it and both side failed again. Double checked the lengths with the old one and they were the same length. However the old plastic one had a plastic mount whereas the aluminum has a hole at the top to of the tube. I believe that the difference was just enough not to allow the window to not fully close. Also noticed that the tube with window closed rode at the edge of the window, so you had to push the tubes in in order to raise window. Were going to order four more, but I'm going to lower the balance 1/2 to 1 inch on each side to avoid pulling internal part out as well as lowering the tube should take care of the balance from trying to ride out of the window. AH the joys of home ownership!!!

@@AllAboutDoorsandWindows Your video was very informative, the draw back was the replacement balance was slightly off from the original by not more than a quarter of an inch. Just enough to cause all the problems I encountered. I do believe the next attempt with the changes I mentioned should resolve any prior issues I experienced. God hates a coward!!!

Great comment and thank you for the information. Replacing mine now and can't buy the balance spring the same length as on the window; off by 1/4" or 1/2"...yes two different sizes. A question for you Randy, if I went a size shorter on the balance spring, that means I would have to lower it by comparison to where the original was mounted, right?

My covers broke when removed due to being brittle. Is there a place to purchase replacements that you can recommend?

Just changed out the aluminum balances, pre- loaded 3 turns to the right installed window lowered and both sides pulled out of tubes. installed two other new ones without pre-load and window does not stay up. Should I try with just one or two turns to the right

Try giving it a few more turns for more tension.

Do the balance replacements come in one size?

    • @AllAboutDoorsandWindows

Hello, we very much appreciate your question and would be more than happy to help.
No, spiral balances come in different widths, lengths, and weights. For instance, tube diameters can be 3/8, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 21/32, or 13/16 so there are many different options for balance replacements. If you still need assistance then please feel free to contact us via the link provided and allow one of our experienced customer service representatives to assist you in resolving this issue.

What makes these go bad? I have eleven windows with the same issue.

We have 12 windows, each with the same problem. I guess just age and wear and tear. Ours are about 25 years old. We're in the process of replacing the shoes in every window and a couple of the spiral balances. We started yesterday afternoon. Two down, and ten to go! It's a pain, but doing it ourselves is saving so much money.
