Hey...! Dont you think you are focusing on wrong word instead of passive income? we should focus the word investment and trading. You are allowed to invest in any stocks whether long term or short term as long as you work 40 hours a week for your employer and do not violate the H-1B visa rules and pay taxes on capital gain. There is no restriction or difference between Long Term investment income or Short Term investment income by either IRS or USCIS for non-immigrants. Only restriction is you cannot work full time as day trader as that would be considered a work but taking 3 trades a week which is currently permissible by Ameri trade is perfectly fine.
How about volunteering/participating for research work for few hours and get paid for that? Like participating in surveys or some studies that you match/qualify for?
The wisest thing that should be on every wise individual list is to invest in different stream of income that don't depend on the government to bring money especially now that the pandemic is hitting economy pretty hard.

Robinhood, that’s a big no no even for beginners. If you can open trading account as non immigrant in United States then best would be TD Ameritrade or Charles swab.

The USCIS may see those as "unauthorized employment" or running a business. Don't do any of these. You will get so much trouble.
