The queen won't come out on her own, most likely they killed her with co2 and then either tore down the wall and cleaned it out or sealed up the empty space with expanding insulation.
When the queen realises that her workers are not returning she will leave the hive with the remaining bees. Once the queen has left and the brood has hatched you can remove the mesh cone and allow the bees back in to rob out the honey. I don't kill any bees when doing these trap outs.

The bees come out by themselves when they go to forage.
try steel wool works great,clean cheap.
