@@theCodyReeder Have you considered an anaerobic digester? Thermophyllic variants can decompose organic matter as quickly as within a few days, and they produce methane gas as byproduct, which could be harvested and used to provide power. At the end of the process, there's a slurry of decomposed organic matter and dead bacteria that can be used as either a feedstock for continued cycles of decomposition, or can be used as compost. Essentially, it's a much accelerated and more efficient composting cycle.
They're a bit expensive as an investment, but it could considerably increase your own energy independence as well as feeding your other projects, and reducing your carbon footprint even further. They're fed best by discarded food waste, and yard trimmings are not very efficient in them, but with your gardens and your own diet (assuming that, at this point, you do not get sustenance by extruding your own mycelium into the soil), you should have plenty of possible feedstock for such digester. Considering the general nature of your projects, it may very well be a suitable investment. They're not that complicated of machines assuming you're not doing it on an industrial scale, so you could plausibly make one yourself as well.
If you *really* want to go the self-sufficiency route, they can also thrive off of manure.

and i love it!!! mycology is awesome!!
i have a feeling he didn't have the winecap substrate in a dark enough area, since it started pinning, and when he dug out the substrate to innoculate his straw bed, it looked like the myc only colonized the outer layer of substrate. maybe he needed some vermiculite or perlite to make the substrate less dense, so the myc could get into the middle of the substrate.
i've only made BRF cakes in wide mouth half pint jars, but every time the substrate was completely colonized all the way to the center.
i think he just didn't have enough winecap myc to colonize the straw before undesirable outside spores were able to outcompete the winecap myc. most of the substrate he threw in the straw bed seemed to be completely uncolonized.

Here, I have couple hundred automated plantations, this is the first harvest, let's take it to my kitchen and weigh it. Oh, 25 tons, well, that's not too shabby for such a little floaty piece of rock. We canned some of it into soups that solved hunger in the Sub-Saharan Africa, that being said, once I get permits to acquire property on the moons of Jupiter, I think we can feed the rest of the continent. That's it, thanks for watching and see you guys next time.

I highly recommend the book “Radical Mycology” by Peter McCoy, I think you will really appreciate it’s general angle and how it’s arranged as far as the information in it goes. It’s a very vast and open take on mycology, but very down to earth, integrating many many different schools of mycological thought across time and cultures. Hits a lot of different aspects of the subject from the ecology, to the cultivation, and finer sciences and other interesting things, not to mention cultural history and even a small essential field guide in the back. Anyways, I wouldn’t be slightly surprised if you’re already familiar with the book, but if not, seriously worth the purchase and time taken to read and reference. There’s plenty more great books on the subject out there too, this one is just special In my mind , and very recent, which is somewhat rare among mushroom books, many are a bit dated.

the difference in flavour is to do with the age and size of the fruiting body, as they get older they toughen up, especially with polypores

Probably too much light exposure. One way to grow them that large without them darkening might be to cover them with plastic sheeting, much like they grow white asparagus. Or maybe just a parasol.

I just love how well Cody is doing now, not to patronise him but we all know he's had more hardship than 90% of his viewers (me included) and he's just taken all of it and bounced right back, amazing.
