Had to laugh when Lex said "You got lucky when I found you" sounded like something Brad would say to her .. Because I was just thinking that when Brad found Lex he was definitely one very lucky guy ! .. Yes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were kind of alternative rock, slower style new wavish during the '80s. Southern rock style, too (They are from Florida). They used a lot of synthesizers in their music during that time, too.
Check out their song/video for "Don't Come Around Here no More". Pretty trippy, too.
You can chill and dance to this kind of music, guys. lol

    • @dggydddy59
      @dggydddy59 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Synthesizers? Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? Are you sure? Aside from this song, I'm trying to think of another well known song of theirs that uses synthesizers. I always thought this song sort of stood out in that regard. If there are any, it seems to me they're extremely subtle. But I'm no TP expert, maybe there are some on some album cuts or something. I don't know but when I think of Benmont Tench I think B3 and Leslie, piano and electric piano. Not Moog and Oberheim.

I remember watching "Running Down a Dream Documentary" on the Sundance channel. It was awesome and so informative. Tom was fighting with the record label over his songs. So every night that he was in the studio recording, he would find different ways to sneak the music reel out of the studio without anyone knowing. Throughout his career, Petty made headlines for defying his record company and pioneering new strategies within an industry dominated by high-powered executives. Not only will Petty’s music live on, but his legacy as a champion of the music industry will as well. RIP Tom.

I've been to metal concerts of the heaviest bands out there. I've been to 5 Ozzfests. I've been to hippie shows with bands that play stuff like the grateful dead. I've even been to big band shows like Wynton Marsalis and some jazz concerts too. I've even been to a hip-hop show or two. But of all the concerts I've ever been to, Tom Petty was by far the best. In fact, the first time I saw him, I booked another show a couple weeks later. Then another the same summer. I've never done back to back concerts for anyone. His music is just a great vibe. And the fans are all amazing too. One thing that struck me was how his fans ranged in age from teens to old hippie type men in their 70s. But everyone knew and loved his songs equally. I thought most of the youngins were there with their parents. Nope! They were there and knew all the songs and enjoyed them just as much as the old guys. It was an amazing experience. Tom Petty is a legend!

Video copies the many post apocalypse movies that were produced in the late 70's and early 80's. It was very famous because it was one of the first videos made that had nothing to do with the lyrics. The critics brains exploded. They couldn't handle it. But us teens ate it up.

Always one of my favorite Petty songs. I use to sing it to an old girlfriend until she found out that she could do better than me and she went. Lol. Still love the song.

The video doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the song, but it works, for some reason.
    It has some '80s vibe....Tom Petty '80s.

I just love the guitar solo in this song. Eric Clapton once said something like, "a great solo isn't defined by what you put in but by what you leave out."
This guitar solo is perfect. Not a wasted note.

Well said. Musicality and flash are different skills, though they can combine and be great too. But a lot of people fall for the flash and don't give their attention to musicality. I used to be one of them. I thought music had to be fast and contain a lot of notes to be good. How utterly wrong I was!

I don't remember ever seeing the video, which is kinda weird because MTV practically raised me, but to me this is night-driving music. Strange thing maybe, but wandering around the area on empty streets listening to classic rock has a meditative effect.

When these videos were made was during the heyday of MTV thus most bands put a lot of effort and money into the making of them for the world wide audience. If the video was popular, the song would then shoot up the record charts too.

Tom Petty is basically his own genre. I'd put him up there with the likes of The Talking Heads, REM, Modest Mouse, Beck and U2 in that regard - it's hard to pin any of these artists down.

They just wrote and recorded what they liked. Their basic genre was classic rock but they wandered into several rock subgenres and even crossed into more blues.

Hard to classify Tom in a specific genre - pop/rock for sure, but a southern, folk, classic, alternative pop/rock sorta way.
When do you listen? His music is great to drive to, cuz it's smooth and steady and easy to enjoy. Very good on long drives.

Brad - "When do you play this"
Me - "You play Tom Petty when ever you can"
There is an amazing documentary called "Running Down a Dream" made in 2007 you should watch it, but I would recommend you react to more of his songs first, so you don't get spoiled on them. The documentary is about 4 hours long, that should give you and idea of just how much music this man created and how he left his imprint on rock and roll.

Thinking similar but more generically. I suppose it's an older generational thing. When listing to albums we listened to full albums sitting in our rooms at a time just for that. Otherwise unless we made mix tapes it was whatever was on the radio in no particular order. Whereas younger folks have grown up with playlists for specific tasks. My music on my phone of some 5-6 thousand songs plays on shuffle. Whatever I get I get and if it's something I'm not in the mood I skip it. So I may listen to a 70's classic rock tune then some Dave Brubeck, then some ABBA, Tool, Joe Walsh, Gershwin, REM, 60s Motown, 80's, 90's, whatever pops up. Always a good time for all music. It all fits within the context of the nostalgia of my life and doesn't speak to me within the confines of a box to define. It just is, you know.
