I think they built the city, in that location, to easily control the lower class food and trade. It's not an accident. It's mafia style protection. Maybe the people had farms and ran to the castle, if they got invaded.
Essentially what medieval feudalism worked... King and his court, lords and knights along with enforcers and clergy with the serfs if lucky somewhat free(without a 'lord') or expendable and without recourse as essentially an indentured servant for all of the 'work' meaning hard labor, building and maintenance, farming, and anything else that needed to be done within their lords holding; never setting foot outside except for church/pilgrimage or as an escort.... Having lived off the grid on our farm for 5 years, I can tell you what the little jar is for. The mother had to bring a jar of oil to light the fire. She would use the little jar to pour oil into the big jar, so when she put the coals in, or used a flint and striker, the contents would be easily ignited. It can be difficult to light a fire without highly flammable fuel. I imagine some hot burning kindling would also be used, but the oil would be very important for successful cremation. The oil jar being left behind might have been part of the funerary rite for the infant. Or maybe it was considered impure after that, or maybe it was left as a grave good for the departed child. A sad, but fortuitous find.
While your suggestion has potential, I respectfully disagree that the use for the little jar was for the purpose of starting a fire. I normally do not use a liquid accelerant to start a fire. All that is needed is dry tinder that will accept a spark. A spark from stone flint & iron pyrite (before flint & steel). The mummy, Otz, found in the Aps carried that fire making kit. A burning coal can be created with hand drills and bow drills. For more info google "How did native Americans produce fire?". Burning lens (magnifying glass) potential goes back to at least 800 BC. (see "The first evidence in history of burning glasses") According to the article it's use could go back to ancient Egypt. I grew up on a PRE-grid farm. Remember well when REA brought power lines across our lands, in the 1950's. I've started many a fire, over the years. The primary ingredient is properly prepared tinder to go with the selected fire starting method/device. I do not remember my Mother ever using any kind of oil ("highly flammable fuel" to build a fire in her wood burning cook stove. I don't need it today, either. That includes starting charcoal briquettes without using lighter fluid.
@@oldtimerlee8820 Oil might not be "necessary" but depending on the type burns more cleanly and cannot get "wet". It is reliable in all weather. Plus it might be required if as she said this is a ritual fire. It also provides a steady flame, not one that jumps around so again might be preferred for a ritual. There are many reasons for why people do what they do. Wow pre-1950s. I was born in 1956 so much of my experience with "rough" tech is either camping, military or power out situations. @@freeto9139 Oils used for lamps is probably universal and spans eons. In this modern era, we tend to think of oil lamps using petroleum products. However, in actuality, both plant and animals have supplied fuels for lamps, since Genesis 3. Possibly earlier with plant derived oils. Simple, shallow, earthenware bowls with plant fiber wicks could burn olive oil and whale oil. Seashells could do the same if pottery wasn't available. As would containers carved from wood and stone. I've rendered beef fat (tallow) and pork fat (lard) that could be used as an "oil" to produce light, if the need arises. More modern shortenings, such as Crisco will do the same thing. Jesus said, "Let there be light." Since those words, light has come to mankind in many different ways and purposes.
I would speculate that the reason Ai was situated in the saddle of the hills was bcoz anyone wanting to traverse the valley would presumably have to pass thru or very near the city/fortress.
There is so much archaeological evidence that supports the Biblical narrative and Israel and King David now that, while every piece of the puzzle is important, it would not hurt the narrative if Ai wasn't found. There are many cities that have not been found.
In Roman Forts commanding officers were often accompanied by their wives and perhaps their families as well. Soldiers, if they had partners, stayed in the barracks while their wives remained in communities built outside the fort. I wouldn't be surprised if the Egyptians had similar arrangements.

Two and a half acres and there would have been two hundred people? I find that hard to believe. A typical suburban New England neighborhood of the same size probably has more than that. With that population density it isn't a city. It's a fortified village.

Another witness of the Truth ... (His Word) left in the earth to be unsealed at the appropriate time. Necessary for those who haven't known (or, been taught to pay attention) to His Word.
Context is key. This verse is not talking about why we believe the Bible is true. It is talking about eternal life in heaven. Faith means trust, not blind belief. So Paul is saying that we walk by trust in the promise of God for eternal life. This has nothing to do with why we believe in Jesus in the first place. Remember that Jesus didn't ask us to just believe. Instead, he walked on water, healed the sick, transfigured before their eyes and eventually rose from the dead. Jesus declared His authority by "sight." He then asked us to trust in Him.
Is there possibly 2 Ais? There was another Ai that was already a ruin when Abraham came from Ur of the Chaldees. If you have ever been to the settlement called P'sagot, they have a ruin that they call HaAi, (The Ai) within the yishuv. The residents take people on tours of the Ai. The ancient ruin abuts next to the Psagot Vineyards.
It should be remembered that not just Ai went out against Israel on the second day of attack. The Bible says the men of Ai and Bethel went against them - "not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go out against Israel." Seems like the first attack was only the men of Ai then probably hearing of the victory the men of 'Bethel though - we want in on this and so the next attack they were also involved in. P.S. did you find the quarry nearby Ai? Also was any person found buried at the city gates under a pile of rocks?
There is a difference between the number of inhabitants and the number of fighters a city could raise. Most of the population would live outside the city walls. We have text that tell us that these cities would often call on neighboring city/states to aid in their defense. I don't know if the king of Ai did that or not but he might have.
I do not think this is Ai. The Bible says 12,000 Ai warriors came out of the gates and were slain. This video says this place they found was 2 1/2 acres and could house and hold about 250 people. Ai would have been MUCH larger to hold 12,000 people.
A pretty good baseball player can throw a baseball 100 meters or more. A warrior that specializes in throwing stones with a sling all their life, may very possibly throw to 500 meters.
Scott Stripling has not solved the problem of Ai. He says the fortress covered 2½ acres with a couple hundred inhabitants. That's already several times the population density of Hong Kong. But this is a HUGE problem: Joshua 8:25 states that 12,000 inhabitants of Ai died in the conquest. That is two orders of magnitude above anything that would be feasible for that site.
Do you know how many of the 12,000 were from Bethel? Jos 8:17 KJV And there was not a man left in Ai *or Bethel* , that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel. Jos 8:25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai. It doesn't say that all people who died were from Ai. Only that ALL the men of Ai were in the TOTAL number of those who perished. Also, chapter 8 doesn't say how many who lived on the lands around Ai died, either. Farmers and shepherds are examples. Forts are generally surrounded by people seeking protection a near their homes can provide. There's a good picture of that in the history of the frontier settlements in the US.

I think they built the city, in that location, to easily control the lower class food and trade. It's not an accident. It's mafia style protection. Maybe the people had farms and ran to the castle, if they got invaded.

Having lived off the grid on our farm for 5 years, I can tell you what the little jar is for. The mother had to bring a jar of oil to light the fire. She would use the little jar to pour oil into the big jar, so when she put the coals in, or used a flint and striker, the contents would be easily ignited. It can be difficult to light a fire without highly flammable fuel. I imagine some hot burning kindling would also be used, but the oil would be very important for successful cremation. The oil jar being left behind might have been part of the funerary rite for the infant. Or maybe it was considered impure after that, or maybe it was left as a grave good for the departed child. A sad, but fortuitous find.
While your suggestion has potential, I respectfully disagree that the use for the little jar was for the purpose of starting a fire. I normally do not use a liquid accelerant to start a fire. All that is needed is dry tinder that will accept a spark. A spark from stone flint & iron pyrite (before flint & steel). The mummy, Otz, found in the Aps carried that fire making kit. A burning coal can be created with hand drills and bow drills. For more info google "How did native Americans produce fire?". Burning lens (magnifying glass) potential goes back to at least 800 BC. (see "The first evidence in history of burning glasses") According to the article it's use could go back to ancient Egypt.
I grew up on a PRE-grid farm. Remember well when REA brought power lines across our lands, in the 1950's. I've started many a fire, over the years. The primary ingredient is properly prepared tinder to go with the selected fire starting method/device. I do not remember my Mother ever using any kind of oil ("highly flammable fuel" to build a fire in her wood burning cook stove. I don't need it today, either. That includes starting charcoal briquettes without using lighter fluid.

Plus it might be required if as she said this is a ritual fire. It also provides a steady flame, not one that jumps around so again might be preferred for a ritual. There are many reasons for why people do what they do. Wow pre-1950s. I was born in 1956 so much of my experience with "rough" tech is either camping, military or power out situations. Simple, shallow, earthenware bowls with plant fiber wicks could burn olive oil and whale oil. Seashells could do the same if pottery wasn't available. As would containers carved from wood and stone.
I've rendered beef fat (tallow) and pork fat (lard) that could be used as an "oil" to produce light, if the need arises. More modern shortenings, such as Crisco will do the same thing.

In Roman Forts commanding officers were often accompanied by their wives and perhaps their families as well. Soldiers, if they had partners, stayed in the barracks while their wives remained in communities built outside the fort. I wouldn't be surprised if the Egyptians had similar arrangements.

Another witness of the Truth ... (His Word) left in the earth to be unsealed at the appropriate time. Necessary for those who haven't known (or, been taught to pay attention) to His Word.
Context is key. This verse is not talking about why we believe the Bible is true. It is talking about eternal life in heaven. Faith means trust, not blind belief. So Paul is saying that we walk by trust in the promise of God for eternal life. This has nothing to do with why we believe in Jesus in the first place.
Remember that Jesus didn't ask us to just believe. Instead, he walked on water, healed the sick, transfigured before their eyes and eventually rose from the dead. Jesus declared His authority by "sight." He then asked us to trust in Him.

There is a difference between the number of inhabitants and the number of fighters a city could raise. Most of the population would live outside the city walls. We have text that tell us that these cities would often call on neighboring city/states to aid in their defense. I don't know if the king of Ai did that or not but he might have.

I do not think this is Ai. The Bible says 12,000 Ai warriors came out of the gates and were slain. This video says this place they found was 2 1/2 acres and could house and
hold about 250 people. Ai would have been MUCH larger to hold 12,000 people.

Scott Stripling has not solved the problem of Ai. He says the fortress covered 2½ acres with a couple hundred inhabitants. That's already several times the population density of Hong Kong. But this is a HUGE problem: Joshua 8:25 states that 12,000 inhabitants of Ai died in the conquest. That is two orders of magnitude above anything that would be feasible for that site.
Do you know how many of the 12,000 were from Bethel?

It doesn't say that all people who died were from Ai. Only that ALL the men of Ai were in the TOTAL number of those who perished.
Also, chapter 8 doesn't say how many who lived on the lands around Ai died, either. Farmers and shepherds are examples. Forts are generally surrounded by people seeking protection a near their homes can provide. There's a good picture of that in the history of the frontier settlements in the US.
