From one perfectionist to another, I appreciate your work. If you plan on bringing your kitties, I suggest installing a small exhaust fan like the composting toilets use wherever you put their litter box. If you don't want any more holes in the side of your box, you can always vent it out on the floor. It makes a huge difference.
If you plan to goto the cold weather area, i.e. "Canada", I've seen other ppl install small wood stoves, but you have to vent it properly. The "pros of the small wood stove is, it can keep you warm and you can cook on it, but it takes time to order it. Plus, if it's cloudy and you can't get much juice from solar, then that's another plus. So you just need a small ax so you can go out / chop some small pieces of wood, bring it in and burn it. Btw, the pass through area, you should probably build a wooded sliding door with insultion to seal in heat b/w compartments. Just a suggestion. Again, the 4 wheel drive and jacking up the box truck in the long run will be a smart thing esp if you're going to snowy areas. Just a suggestion. :)
Thank you for these very informative videos! I plan on living in a box truck soon. You've given me the confidence to do this! Love that there's not really any music in these. Would love to have tea with you during a blizzard and have chili going in the crock pot! Sounds lovely! Hope to see you on the road!
I am in Arizona. I got an E350 passenger van from a retirement home. The home put 5,000 miles a year on it and maintained it well. There is little to no rust in Arizona either. Any way I did the same fan, then my solar panels, and then my AC. In retrospect I would have done solar then AC and fan last! Building in the heat is killing my tubby middle aged rear 😅.
Hey man, just wanted to say watching your van build series every Saturday is now my go to - best way to relax and end the day. Thanks for the awesome content, looking forward to where this goes
The tubes you got for your roof rack, use the same for your walls and ceiling, it makes your Roof stronger, you still have your pink insulation same thickness. If a tree wind blows ya over anything it will support the box

HIGH END MOTOR SPORTS.......inside windows covers...... my ford covers fit great ......expensive...BUT you will have perfect templates to build new ones
Just stumbled across your channel and I have been binge watching your videos today. I enjoy watching you work and your laid-back attitude. You just seem to roll with it, even when the awning didn’t have all of the hardware, you just made it work. It’s nice to see relaxed people that are just getting things done and living in their dreams. That roof, though, it scares me a little bit. I’m looking forward to watching your framing videos to see if you reinforce the roof structure and tie it in on down to the floor.
f%$kin cords... i feel ur pain brother... when i did my cargo trailer over, i swear i was 20 pounds lighter from climbing up and down the damned ladder by the time everything was said and done :) keep up the fine work
The outside wrap looks like it'll be good to have in cold/snowy weather. Question of fans vs. a/c = yes! Lol...I have both, but I live in FL. You're doing a fantastic job, and I appreciate the care you're taking to attend to details. Yeah, it was a 1 1/2 hour video but I wasn't bored and it didn't feel long. I really hope you have a good design sense. If not, I'll probably proffer unsolicited advice because I just can't help myself 🤪. That is my favorite part. In my van, I went with a New England Coastal vibe...I'm thinking you might go for a cabin feel, but that's just speculation. Looking forward to part 6! 😊Lauren😊
Have you look into adding a "mini split unit" in the back (google it if interested) so you can get either AC or heat and design a space for a shower area / full bathroom? (just curious). And if the limiting factor is water, if you design a "rain water collection system then all you'll need are water filters and uv lights to clean the rain water before consumption. Btw, you can make the shower, "hot water on demand and recirculating water too (I've seen it in other channels, which means you can take your time in the shower and not rush. Just some suggestions. Btw, since you know how to weld, you can weld a structure to hold an e-bike if you choose (in the future) and mount a milk crrate in front of the e-bike for resupply runs and park the box truck in some BLM land because it's free while you go for resupply. If you design the rain collection system, the resupply run will be for essentials and you can stay off grid for longer periods of time. RE: tiolet, they make dry flush systems, you can google them, everything goes into a bag. I watch a lot of YT videoes. LOL
yeah im doing a mini split ac most likely. saving up for it.. i will have a multi-purpose area that is a shower and place for the cats litterbox. bucket and bag system for the toilet. i have a super crazy idea for a roof-mounted rain collecting solar shower. im excited to make a video about that.
Commenting while watching.....love how make sure it's the best it can be to prevent problems in the long run. When I build things it has been great hardly issues (referring "hardly" nature interfering, road debris. It helps people read instructions, "wink" "wink". 😆
Previously, I actually looked at the werchtay 200 watt panels myself. I have all flexible panels. I bought my panels over the last dozen years here and there when I could. I'll probably end up getting some of those, the werchtay or something similar. I think you made a pretty good choice for your panels. That's a lot of work but well worth it. I've been collecting things for my off-grid property for over a dozen years and I haven't even started at my property lot yet. It takes work and time to assemble everything even after you collect all of the stuff to do it with. Awesome build man!
i saw a bob wells video about this place in phoenix that sells decommissioned panels from solar farms. they sell them cheap by the pallet. good for an off-grid property
@@vanlifemeow Oh yes, I saw that video. I had seen those on Google before that. That's a really cheap way to build a system if you have the space (larger panels) and a person knows how to build a system, which I have the knowledge to do it. I put my money on buying the land and other equipment first which I'm still assembling things like homemade gasoline generators. I currently have about 6000 watts of flexible panels and over 100 charge controllers. I'd love to keep acquiring more panels and get that magic number, meaning enough to last me the rest of my life. Hopefully, that one outfit would still be in business and it's still cheap by the time I get to it but if not, I'll just buy some more smaller panels. I've got 1.21 acres in Elko county, Nevada, not Elko city itself. My goal at my current age of 48 is to be away from all of the nonsense in my later years when the rest of the world and country descends into complete chaos and I'll be sitting on my front porch, out on my land sipping iced tea, watching my wind generators spin. Plus, a cold climate will keep most of the idiot people away because they don't have the knowledge to survive in that kind of climate. I see how you're doing things. I'm down in Las Vegas, Nevada. I've been here for over 20 years due to a divorce and raising a child in the early 2000's. I'm not a city person, although I adapted to it. I grew up in the mountains in california and lived in smaller places growing up. Myself, I don't like to travel too much. I've been there, done that. I like to stay put these days. You remind me a lot of myself. With all of the things that are out, you can design and build anything you want these days. It's an exciting era to live in!
Love your video today!!!❤ Impressed with your attention to detail, the time and instruction will greatly benefit anyone doing the same project!!!! Looking forward to your next video!!!
9:43 my dad taught me to make a square knot out of the extension cord & device cord to avoid them unplugging: wrap one under the other like you're tying a shoe and then plug the ends together. that way any tugging will be tightening the knot and not unplugging the device.
Another great video and thanks for all of your hard work and craftsmanship in your build thanks again and looking forward to seeing your next video on it Kraig from Washington State look forward to seeing where you go on your journeys and hopefully Washington State is in your future plans
For the hole in the floor could you not use some plastic end caps from a plumbing merchants on the underside and then fill the hole with expanding foam. Fix the end caps on with epoxy and then underseal / seam seal over them.
FYI, a common problem parking in "BLM land" is the land is usually not paved so after a heavy rain, your vehicle may get struck. Something you might want to look into boosting the height of the vehicle and making it a "4 wheel drive", since you're a mechanic you can do all the work yourself in the future. Just figure you should know this so you don't get stuck in the middle of no where with no cell signal, right? :)
2wd to 4wd could be expensive. Best to have recovery equipment, massive tow winch, and shackles with multiple recovery hooks on your truck. Better mud tire spares, traction boards, etc are more helpful.
What about expanding the interior room of the cab by extending the front over the top of the cab. You can turn that into extra storage or your bed and and have more room in the rest of the box for life's necessities/wants.
@@vanlifemeow it’s probably not practical. I don’t have your skills, but I remodeled a 5th wheel during Covid. Mostly cosmetic stuff. I really want a stealth camper that could pull a 2 horse trailer. I like to horse camp. Goals!
I pretty much just bindged watched all your videos on this build. Im highly impressed on how good everthing is coming out. There is so many videos out box trucks builds but i like that yours has more of a camper look to it.
Ugly and works still works if it works. I'm keeping tabs on this conversion because I plan to do similar in the hopefully near future except with some differences. I'm probably going with the 14ft for various reasons and I want it to be completely off-grid capable so I don't have to worry about where to get electricity or such and just find a sunny spot. I want to travel, but slowly. It's going to be interesting trying to get the thing built though due to disabilities, will probably have to find and hire someone to do a lot of the physical work. EDIT: I too will be traveling with kitties. I'm still "split" on whether to use a mini split system or an inverter window ac unit and some alternative heating system like propane or diesel. The split units can only heat down to a certain outside temp so if I end up in very cold places, I'd need alternative heat anyway.
You have been doing a great.job..like all the explanation..I like to apologize you for the comment.the other day about.the awning..was not a correct..comentary...
Your videos are never to long is seams like the minute I start you video it ending keep them coming can’t wait to see what your plans are for the interior
Looking great so far Dave! One suggestion I have for you is to mount your solar panels lengthwise - two on either side of the fan - thereby leaving a spot down the middle free. Might make it easier for when you need to get up on the roof again for maintenance and cleaning. Hope this helps. Cheers from Michigan!
@@vanlifemeow Ah, gotcha! Makes sense. Looking forward to seeing how you incorporate your wood stove. Foresty Forest has one in his van too. Kinda cool feature!
@@vanlifemeow No doubt! He does some epic adventures for sure! Another u-tuber I follow is Brian, aka AdventureVanMan. He's living out of the same size U-haul box van as you. Might be worth checking out his channel if you haven't already. Cheers!
Not sure if you’re already too far along or already did this but that foil air duct tape would make a big difference on the cracks between each foam piece. Also, if you’re somewhere cold, that wood stove will easily keep you very warm. Should be really cozy.
I insulated a 5x8 home built squaredrop camper walls and ceiling with that same insulation but mine was 2 inch not 1 inch. Absolutely no squeaking but also I had hardwood boards and fpc? Panel in front of it. Your paneling and walls will keep it from squeaking
Siless liner for that curved part up front on your roof, its a sound deadner and insulation product, amazon has it, sticky back, great product, i used it on my Dodge Promaster
Well done, My only observation is that, seeing that is not a place that is generally seen, people use much more calking to make use that water will not infiltrate over time.
I have a cat too in my RV. I installed a cat door in the living area and created a tunnel thru the inside wall to the inclosed storage area where I installed another cat door. I keep my litter box in that area. Easy access from outside for cleaning and no smell. Just throwing it out there.

What about expanding the interior room of the cab by extending the front over the top of the cab. You can turn that into extra storage or your bed and and have more room in the rest of the box for life's necessities/wants.
Very much enjoying the build!
I would love to build out a utility truck, the kind with all the cabinets on the outside? I have a vision in my head.
i helped my friend remove one of those off of a ford truck he bought. they're heavy!
@@vanlifemeow it’s probably not practical. I don’t have your skills, but I remodeled a 5th wheel during Covid. Mostly cosmetic stuff. I really want a stealth camper that could pull a 2 horse trailer. I like to horse camp. Goals!
lovely job your doing there
Looking awesome!
You can use a serrated kitchen steak knife to cut that foam board with. Maybe a little late but, a tip anyway.
I used the same insulation, no squeaks
You have been doing a great.job..like all the explanation..I like to apologize you for the comment.the other day about.the awning..was not a correct..comentary...
Your videos are never to long is seams like the minute I start you video it ending keep them coming can’t wait to see what your plans are for the interior
Looking great so far Dave! One suggestion I have for you is to mount your solar panels lengthwise - two on either side of the fan - thereby leaving a spot down the middle free. Might make it easier for when you need to get up on the roof again for maintenance and cleaning. Hope this helps. Cheers from Michigan!
ive considered that. the panels would overhang the roof 3" and i wouldnt be able to exhaust my wood stove
@@vanlifemeow Ah, gotcha! Makes sense. Looking forward to seeing how you incorporate your wood stove. Foresty Forest has one in his van too. Kinda cool feature!
id love to climb a mountain with that guy
@@vanlifemeow No doubt! He does some epic adventures for sure! Another u-tuber I follow is Brian, aka AdventureVanMan. He's living out of the same size U-haul box van as you. Might be worth checking out his channel if you haven't already. Cheers!
awesome job, I am concerned that you might have scored the roof material, May want to consider RV roof sealant. I am enjoying your long video.
Hope you’re keeping track of all your expenses
David would you recommend using floor double reflective underlayment with silver foil 3mm on walls and floor of box truck?
im not familiar with that material. id say use whatever has a good r-value and doesnt weigh too much, cost too much and is moisture resistant
Not sure if you’re already too far along or already did this but that foil air duct tape would make a big difference on the cracks between each foam piece.
Also, if you’re somewhere cold, that wood stove will easily keep you very warm. Should be really cozy.
Things getting awsome, dont forget to build a air deflector ove the cabin than you can use as storage too :)
We did pl300 when we rebuilt the walls of our rv. Sadly it didn't hold up over time.
the 300 is kinda runny. ive used it a lot. the 400 was better but i cant find it anymore
I insulated a 5x8 home built squaredrop camper walls and ceiling with that same insulation but mine was 2 inch not 1 inch. Absolutely no squeaking but also I had hardwood boards and fpc? Panel in front of it. Your paneling and walls will keep it from squeaking
Better have good ac for Death Valley. Yes a mini split
Looking good inside can't wait to see those panels install so cool.
Let’s go part 5 can’t wait to get off too re watch this keep up the great work bro enjoying your videos
Siless liner for that curved part up front on your roof, its a sound deadner and insulation product, amazon has it, sticky back, great product, i used it on my Dodge Promaster
thanks!
im going to buy a bunch for the cab. This looks like good stuff. thanks again
Your amazing
You know, or can figure out, how to do everything!!! And it looks great!
You can, too. TH-cam has DIY answers to any van building issues.
Another idea is apply aluminum foil roll really cheap from groceries stores. Help t9 insure good insulation.
It's really coming together nicely. :)
Well done, My only observation is that, seeing that is not a place that is generally seen, people use much more calking to make use that water will not infiltrate over time.
